Are black cast iron tubs/shower receptors a pain to keep clean?

We wanted a dark grey, but it's on lengthy back order and we can't wait. We could get white, but that's so boring. If black is a terrible idea, we might just opt to do a regular pan and tile the shower floor. (It's the Kohler Salient shower pan we're looking at).

I have heard that the black enameled sinks show water spots very easily. There is a black with brown ticking that they offer. I have the Salient center drain that I just put in (plumber put in) that is Ice Gray. Very nice.

enduring, we checked Ice Gray and Basalt, too. Our only choices for immediate delivery are black or white. We could do tile instead, but I'd really rather not.

Anyone else?

Thanks! We are very happy with the way it turned out. We were walking that fine line between wanting the bathroom to look nice (opens to the FR) and not wanting to spend a fortune on a guest bathroom. The top edge of the "curb" (the curved part) is the pan, the front part is tile (cut pieces of the shower wall tile). mydreamhome, I use a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser on the shower pan and on our Toto cast iron bathtubs when the no-slip grips start to look grungy. I had called Kohler about using it when we got the receptor and got their okay, and I think I did the same with Toto. Lysol Basin, Tub, and Tile cleaner (in the aerosol can) works pretty well, too for regular cleaning (I only use it in the tubs and the shower pan, not on the walls since we have natural stone border tile in all three bathrooms), but when the grips themselves are dirty, Magic Eraser does a better job (quicker and less elbow grease!).

Our new cast iron tubs (Toto) and cast iron shower pan (Kohler) have the non-slip grips and they don't feel too rough at all. I've sat in my tub a number of times since it was installed thse past June, and it really isn't even a noticeable thing. The circles (in the Toto) and the rectangles (in the model Kohler we have) have enough texture to prevent slips, but are far from uncomfortable in the least. FYI, our tub and pan are white, as are the grips. I use an original style Mr. Clean Magic eraser on the grips every so often to keep them as clean as day one.

Thanks for your response. I've posted a picture of the drain and the area around it. You can see the pitting I am talking about to the left of the drain. Additionally, looking at it more closely I am wondering what is around the drain. At first I had thought it was just caulk, but now I am wondering if it is some sort of epoxy sealant. When we tried to clean it, the top layer just came off (lower right corner). I am particularly concerned about the black spot above the drain. I had thought that was mold, but I can't get it off, and now I think it may be very thin enamel revealing the iron beneath. Any thoughts are appreciated!

Well I'd avoid it unless it was truly trashed - the refinish does not last very long before it starts bubbling and peeling. Even within a year or two the bottom will start peeling, and at a cost of $400-500 is it really worth it. Instead, get cold soft water run to the bathroom (along with the hot soft which you probably already have). This keeps the hard water deposits from forming on all the bathroom fixtures and makes them VERY easy to keep clean. If the rim is shiny, but the bottom is worn you can get a clear porcelain polish that repels water. Or not - no one's going to notice that the bottom is not shiny.

I think we've decided to wait for the Thunder Grey. We just like it too much to "settle".

I think that is the right thing to do. The wait is temporary but the immediate fix is permanent. I know someone who has black fixtures and says it is a daily cleaning thing. To the point that they essentially dry the sink entirely each time they use it.

I am planning on the Salient Receptor in Ice Grey or Thunder Grey in one bath and all Ice Grey in another bath so I am curious to see one in place.

I am actually putting a bathroom in the basement first, before I remodel the two second-floor baths which both need to be remodeled and will both need to be done simultaneously since they share a wall and that wall is moving. We lived through a kitchen remodel that left us without one for 4-1/2 years :(. By having a full bath elsewhere I hope to not have to make any finishes decisions based on timing...we'll see.

We decided to wait for the Thunder Grey, and have picked the tile for the shower and accent wall to go with it, and the faucets. Now all we need is a vanity!

That is good news to hear. I think the Thunder Grey is a very nice color. This bathroom is on your terms, remember.

The wait is temporary but the immediate fix is permanent. as palimpsest stated, is a great motto to stand by, while making choices.
