Free Programs vs Paid

All the protection on my computers are free programs. I'm wondering what advantage there is to paying for them. For instance, I'm having problems with Zone Alarm working in a network, it keeps blocking one machine from accessing the other. It has been configured to allow access, but continues to block after the machines are restarted. Tea Timer (Spybot) is another pain when setting up a network. AVG Free only offers daily scanning when scheduled. I don't like that. I'd like to schedule weekly.

I'm assuming the paid versions have more options but wonder if it's worth the cost. Anyone use the paid versions?
