Free game downloads vs paid???

New laptop and I'm looking to download a few games.....no 'gamer' here. I just need Scrabble, a jigsaw puzzle program and solitaire. A Win 42 domino game for DH. I'd rather spend $$$ if I'm going to be risking all sort of problems from choosing 'free'.

I have downloaded the free protective programs you guys recommend. Just don't know if I should trust the free game sites.

I would buy them retail. I don't like to be play online. Office Max has $10 games, buy one get one free.

There used to be a site that posted a jigsaw puzzle every day and you could set it the number of pieces you wanted. You can even put a picture on there and turn it into a puzzle, it was free. I played it for awhile. I love jigsaw puzzles and have a special table and board for mine.

Absolutely no gaming expert here.

What O/S do you now have? With W8/8.1 you may get free games as they could already be linked on your Apps page under "G", or through the system itself via the Microsoft Store which should be available on the Start page. Particularly the style games you referred to.

I've downloaded Solitaire for myself and two youth games for my granddaughter. No problems.

You can drag him into small claims court without an attorney, and it would be fairly easy to win. But actually getting paid on the judgment could be a problem if he is a deadbeat. Call lawn services and get written estimates to fix the damage. Of course the price will be ridiculous. If you have photos and estimates, you will win. The other guy might not even show up to court, in which case you win by default. The property line is a separate issue. Instead of money, you would sue for specific performance to establish a new property line. You'd need paperwork from the surveyors to prove everything. btw, if he leaves that coop there for 20 years, by the laws of adverse possession, he would actually own whatever piece of your land that he had claimed as his own.

All of my computers stay up 24/7 and connected to fios, as long as you have all your protection layers up and running all the time there is no difference from daytime and night time at all. I never turn off my pc's unless there is weather or I am going out of town. I do turn off my monitor at night. I am also behind a router with firewall so I have hardware and software firewalls. As I said I have used zone alarm pro, an older version, for years now on all my windows computers. I do not like the more recent versions because they are more bloated. Using an older version is ok it does it's job just fine. My scans run at about 3am when I know I will not be on the computer and it will have all the resources to run them. I have them set on different days of course. I run regular scans at a minimum of once a week but usually more often. Any other tasks I have set up in windows task scheduler. On my linux computer I have klam AV and Guarddog firewall, not that you really need any of that on a linux machine but since I also have windows machines that I send to and from it is more to protect my windows boxes. I always have spywareblaster on all my windows computers and usually have spywareguard also both by javacool. I now mostly use superantispyware on them, I have not used AdAware in ages, on occasion use Spybot S&D. NEVER use registry cleaners on any of my computers.

Ok this is simple now. Just use Google and type edit registry and millions of hits appear. Look through the first few and you will find many tutorials with good graphics showing step by step. You are nervous and rightly so because of all the warnings about messing up a registry. HOWEVER, this is nothing more than making a correction to a spelling error if you look at it that way. First time just go into the registry working down to the needed page. Once there you can walk away and grab a coffee if you feel stress, or you can make the simple correction to the one entry in question. Those of us who help others always need to stress the importance of caution in the registry because of those who are so impetuous. my ex son in law is a good example, he goes into a computer like a bull in a china shop. Luckily I do not have to clean up behind him anymore :) Now I have learned how to put stuff into a flash drive and save my files. Why? You are going to back up the registry as a precaution, nothing more. To save your work, assuming it is stored in My Documents. Insert the thumb drive, cancel the popup right click Start click Explore Now you see Windows Explorer opened Look near the top on the left side and right click on My Documnts click Properties in the pop up Look to see how large the My Documents folder is and if you have enough room on the thumb drive. We'll assume you have room. OK.... Click My Documents to highlight On the right side click the top item to highlight Hold down the Shift key and tap the End key now all the right side is highlighted right click anywhere on the highlighted data click Copy in the pop up Scroll down the left side now to find the thumb drive right click on it in the pop up click Paste and the contents are copied to your thumb drive - or any other drive you designate. Done! Simple huh?

DA where did you download your solitaire from? I am looking for the free cell that is usually on a windows PC and I downloaded one and it did not have all of the options unless you bought it.

Thx for the responses. I'm pretty much a homebody due to health issues and do mostly all my shopping online. The internet has been a boon to me.

Win 8.1 on an HP. All that's on it (that I can find) are a few games with very limited usage. Then you have to buy or join the gaming group and purchase 'coins' and pay as you play. I've checked Amazon, my #1 go to place. They've so many games, I was weary from wading thru them. Hence the decision to find the three or four I listed. I also have an iPad and have an assortment of word games that I enjoy when I have time.

I'll check out the Jigsaw puzzle link.

I get all my free games from My Play City and I have for many yrs. now, never had a problem, and they have all kinds of games.I like mahjong, solitaire, hidden object and more. However pay attention before install, do a custom install and take checks out of add on's such as mezza etc. then it will be fine and when opening your game take check mark/dot out of make my play city browser/home pg. I would never pay for a game, of course I don't pay for any software I can get for Free.

Not all HPs are created equal, but be sure you tried this:

On the bottom left corner of my W8.1 HP's Start page is a white circle with a down arrow in it. Click on that icon. In the App menu under H is HP Games and G is Games. In the green Microsoft Store tile are free HP games.

The Store on this HP is where I got Free Solitaire from. I looked and though they offer some other older Windows games Free Cell is not one of them.

I learned of Gismo's Freeware, a couple of years ago, recommended here and have been happy with what I downloaded. I'm on Win7 so unsure of Win8 compatibility.
