Hi!

My HP officejet v40 will print off the internet, but it will not let me scan photos onto my computer. I am not high tech, as you can tell. I would be indebted to someone who could help me fix my problem. When I try to scan, after it attempts it, a message says "cannot connect to pc". Please help!!!

Starting your second thread does little to help you. People show up here as and when spare time allows and you need the person who might have the answer. I'll try.

Has the scanner portion ever worked? How old is the printer?

I would suggest the simplest way would be to uninstall the HP software and start over. Grab your HP printer CD and the manual that came with it and install. HP requires that the printer is not connected to the computer during the initial installation. At a certain point you will be asked to connect the printer, the software will investigate and install all the necessary drivers.

It could be something as simple as a corrupt twain driver.

I have a different Hp 3in1 than you do but I have learn in the
past that HP's can be a real pain. In the past I had a corrupt
file in HP and reinstalling would not fix the problem. When I
would uninstall HP didn't remove all of the files and the corrupt file kept causing trouble. I finally formated the
computer just to fix HP 3in1. I don't advise you doing that.
Big hassle.
Try right clicking HP - Properties - Find Target - If you think you have
all of the HP file. - Select all - Delete and than Reinstall.
Run CCleaner for Clean and Registry for cleanup.
Maybe someone else will have a better suggestion.
Did you get into the Task Manager - Processes Tab and remove
an HP file?

Thanks fruitjarfla, I seen on the HP Printer Forum that so many HP models were troublesome with no Band aids so I just junked it and went to Wal-Mart and got a Canon for $39.00. It works Great & and the ink refills are dirt cheap.

I thought I'd report back for people who are still looking. I ended up getting the Canon Pixma MX850 (after seeing the review at pcmag.com which suggested that there were substantial improvements over the earlier model (they were not directly comparing it to the mx700, but rather a recent MP??? model. Nevertheless, it sounded like this 850 was better than what came before (the details about how skip my mind, but I know in readin it, it seemed worthwhile). I had someone set up the Canon on Friday. It is big (and as Jane said, it's attractive and seems commercial in quality). I LOVE IT. The software is not bulky like HP, and it was easy to connect the printer to my desktop, my daughter's, my husband's laptop and my laptop. I can scan documents and the wonderful lcd display will walk me through simple steps. It asks if I'm scanning from the platen or document feeder, if it should be saved to a pc or faxed or emailed (I believe those were the choices). Then you can choose which computer to receive the scan (that computer must be on to receive it - otherwise I think it could be sent as an email attachment to be loaded on the computer later), and whether it should be saved as a pdf file or jpg. There are other formats for saving it in as well but I haven't tried that yet. There's also a way to optically capture the text and turn it into a text document which I think can be edited (for those without the expensive Acrobat Writer which allows editing of PDF files but costs a few hundred dollars). I know some of the above is very simple and naive, but I've included for folks like myself who have no idea what they were looking for. It easily prints in color or black. It has a duplexer. I'm not sure I'll care that much about printing two-sided documents, but I love the either of feeding 2-sided documents in the ADF (auto document feeder) and being able to copy or scan them without standing there and changing pages. That was a huge factor for me in getting this over the MX700 which doesn't have a duplexer. At first I hadn't considered the convenience of copying and scanning 2-sided documents by loading the sheets in the ADF, pressing a button and walking away. That's convenient. This printer is also remarkably quiet. I was used to loud functioning from my HP PSC 950 and didn't realize printers could be so quiet. I could even carry on a business call without interference. I'm thrilled with this machine (which Dell has for $239 - best price I found). Even my husband who saw no reason for obsessing about this choice is amazed at how much functionality and ease of use is packed into a $240 machine. You might want to do a search of this site and perhaps Google too. I recall complaints and comments of the ink usage not being what Kodak claimed, and negative remarks regarding the picture printing quality with a Kodak. Also, if it suits your needs a default setting to greyscale for general usage, and when on the Internet printing only the area required are both great ways to make ink last longer. I just replaced my old HP F380 AIO after it became unreliable with a new C4680 AIO from HP for $59.99. The cartridges were $31.99 for a pair. Admittedly this model is just above an entry level, but since I have a much better traditional printer for "important" printing it fits the bill. I am truly surprised how well it works. DA

HP is as helpful as most others when it comes to finding answers. HP gives 135 "answers" to the problem you stated and none are the correct response to "cannot connect to pc" for the V40. You said that the problem occurs when attempting to scan photos, which assumes that text or other scans work okay. Have you tried using another program to do a photo scan, such as Irfanview? If that works, then as previously stated, the answer may be in the driver being used or some other function of the HP software.

I would first try deleting the printer from the XP Printers and Faxes folder, unplugging the USB cable from the computer (very important to disconnect from this end) and restarting Windows. After you are back at the desktop, plug in the USB cable with the printer turned on and let the drivers reinstall. HP does have some 'scrubber' type software on their website (for complete uninstall including registry keys)if you have to uninstall/reinstall the whole software package, but this is very time consuming.Do you have any new firewall applications? Sometimes our protection can block scanning too.

Only since you said please.

Did you install the factory drivers or did you just allow Windows to locate the new peripheral? The factory drivers are necessary for all the features to be full function.

If you do uninstall the printer do so according to the manufacturer's directions. Not all printers have the same protocol. In fact, not all brand models are the same.

Also, what O/S are you using? Older systems may not have the most current driver for the printer.

I have an HP 3210 PhotoSmart and there is a problem with the driver included in Windows XP. This glitch only happens under a certain set of conditions. Here's my work-around. It may work for you, too.

After the computer has thoroughly finished booting, install the printer again. (Wait until your security software has finished its startup checks. Often, this runs in background, but will interfere with many operations until it has finished.)

Install your printer as a second printer.

1. Open the Control Panel, then open "Printers"
2. Right click in the printer panel and choose install a printer.
3. Follow the Wizard.
4. When asked, use the existing driver (if it is the correct one).
5. After the new install is fnished, there will be two printers of the same kind showing in the printer panel. The one with the check mark is the one you just installed; The other one was the first install at boot up.
6. Right click on the unchecked printer icon and delete it. Close all panels and try the printer/scanner.

One possible cause is the communication link between the computer and printer. This has to be a 2-way data link. You are probably ok on this item if you are using a USB cable. If you have an older printer with a parallel port, the parallel port on your computer must be a 2-way port, and the 2-way capability must be enabled.

Another possibillty: The scanner software has not been installed. Software for the printer and scanner should have been included with the printer. If this was missing or damaged, you may be able to download a copy from the printer manufacturer. Beware these files are big and will take considerable time over a dial-up connection.
