Printer model might be helpful. Did you install the printer as HP says? Their machines seem very finicky on this point. with mine you do not connect the USB cord until told to do so. Did you check that this printer is compatible with Win 8? Did you use the CD that came with the printer or look for the latest updates from HP? Are you using this wireless? If so did you use a USB cable for the initial setup? If not you should then once it is set up and working you can remove the USB cable. I have an HP 3210 PhotoSmart and there is a problem with the driver included in Windows XP. This glitch only happens under a certain set of conditions. Here's my work-around. It may work for you, too. After the computer has thoroughly finished booting, install the printer again. (Wait until your security software has finished its startup checks. Often, this runs in background, but will interfere with many operations until it has finished.) Install your printer as a second printer. 1. Open the Control Panel, then open "Printers" 2. Right click in the printer panel and choose install a printer. 3. Follow the Wizard. 4. When asked, use the existing driver (if it is the correct one). 5. After the new install is fnished, there will be two printers of the same kind showing in the printer panel. The one with the check mark is the one you just installed; The other one was the first install at boot up. 6. Right click on the unchecked printer icon and delete it. Close all panels and try the printer/scanner. One possible cause is the communication link between the computer and printer. This has to be a 2-way data link. You are probably ok on this item if you are using a USB cable. If you have an older printer with a parallel port, the parallel port on your computer must be a 2-way port, and the 2-way capability must be enabled. Another possibillty: The scanner software has not been installed. Software for the printer and scanner should have been included with the printer. If this was missing or damaged, you may be able to download a copy from the printer manufacturer. Beware these files are big and will take considerable time over a dial-up connection.

I have a HP PhotoSmart 3210xi All-In-One and it does all the things you specified above, and does it well. I have run 7000 sheets through it, some were photo paper, and encountered only one jam, and that was because an unnoticed dog eared sheet was in the paper supply. I don't think this model is available any more, but has been superceded by later models with similar capabilities. The major difference for the model that foll0wed this one is choices of connections to the computer. My model included frames for scanning 35 mm transparences, although a dedicated 35 mm scanner probably does a better job due to more pixels per inch. These frames store inside the lid of the printer - very handy. This printer series breaks with HP tradition of ink jets on the bottom of the ink cartridges, thus getting new jets each time a cartridge is changed. The advantage to this is if the ink jets become clogged, these can be tossed away and a new set loaded in. This technology was often limited to one black cartridge plus a 3 color cartridge. This combination was lacking a bit in print detail for photos compared to multi-colors of ink. The PhotSmart series uses fixed ink jets, similar to competitors, and 6 ink colors: Black, Yellow, Light Cyan, Cyan, Light Magenta, and Magenta. With these colors, the printer is able to produce a wide range of colors and shades. The ink is HP's Vivera, a much improved ink. it is fade resistant and supposedly more immune to smearing, however, I find that both printed paper and photo ptints still must be protected from water droplets, and are not smear proof, but are a little more smear proof than hte older ink. The major advantage is much better fade resistance. The ink cost is higher than the older 2 cartridge setup although one only needs to replace individaul colors when used up. Because ofthe fixed ink jet heads, HP has built in an automatic maintence routine to keep the jets clear. Periodically, the printer will enter this routine and purr for about 30 seconds while it runs the jet maintence. During this period, power should not be removed from the printer, and the printer is not available for printing. At first, it is startling when the printer, without waring, suddently makes a noise and enters the maintence routine. After awhile, the user gets accustomed to this noise and the startle factor goes away. Inks are available in single and double packs of individual colors. However, HP does supply a photo kit of inks and about 150 4x6 photo sheets. This kit is rasonable priced for the photo papers, but beware that the ink cartridges contain only enough ink to print the photo papers in the pack assuming average color mix. Some of the cartidges do not contain as much ink as a regular cartridge.

Last August I moved from Ohio to Massachusetts. Jan & I planned on taking about 3 weeks for the trip so we could get in some sightseeing photo time on the way. For the trip I packed my computer tower, 3 DSLR's and about 8 lenses plus an assortment of other odds & end. The remainder of my equipment was packed and shipped with an anticipated delivery date of 4 to 6 week. For my photo business I usually deliver the end item in digital format on a memory card or I have prints made through Adorama but I did need a new monitor for my computer so about a day after arriving in Massachusetts Jan and I went to Staples and got a nice flat screen(I had been using one of the old desktop boat anchors..LOL). Jan is just a beginner at photography and she said she wanter to get a photo printer for her computer, so we looked around to see what our options were. One a display in the isle they had the Kodak ESP 7250 All-in-one on sale. Normal list for the wireless model $129 and the hard wire model $99 less 25% for the next 2 days. I didn't know a thing about Kodak printers but in my mind it had three things going for it. 1.It was the cheapest printer in the store, 2. It is advertised at using the cheapest ink, 3. Would Kodak put their name on a photo printer that doesn't do a descent job of printing photos? When I got it home rather than mess with a detailed Wifi setup I just plugged in a USB cable from the printer to my router. Inserted the setup disc and sat back. Within moments I was watching a setup video that said it was all set up and went on to explain the features. Two paper trays. The top tray will handle up to 5x7 photo paper or business envenlopes and the bottom tray handles up to 8.5x11 legal size bond or photo paper. When your printing photos it will ask you which size you want and select the paper automatically. I had a pack of 8x10 generic photo paper so I loaded a sheet, went to my pictures and pulled up a photo then hit print. A couple clicks as it loaded the paper then it went silent. "What is wrong" I thought? About 10 to 15 seconds later I got my answer. nothing wrong, it just prints so quiet you can't hear it running till the finished print pops out. I then checked the print, and to say I was not happy would be an understatement. I can only eplain it in one word...trash. The print had way too much ink, was still wet and actually smeared when I touched it then the thought hit me, those are new ink catridges and usually you have to run a test print to set up the print heads. I checked the book, and sure enough, there is an easy test print to run, but I found something even more interesting. You only need to run the test print if you use non-Kodak photo paper. So here is the catch I thought. All genuine Kodak photopaper has a bar code printed on the back of the paper that tells the printers processor how to set the print head for that piece of paper. This means you can easily switch from gloss to semi-gloss or matt without changing the setup, but how much does genuine Kodak paper cost? To my complete surprise, while Kodak Paper is a bit high in Staples, at WalMart it is the same or cheaper than HP photo paper. When I began running prints on genuine Kodak paper I could not believe my eyes. The prints look better than those that we had printed at Walmarts 1hr service. To get a good test of the prints I selected 6 photos and put them on a memory card, then I printed them on this machine. I then took the memory card to 4 different 1hr photo service places around town and had them printed again, being careful to mark the back of the photos to know where they were printed. I then took all the photos to the photoclub meeting at our senior center and spread them on a table and asked everyone to select which they thought looked the best. Over 90% of the people who participated selected the prints from this printer. The printer also has built in memory card readers so it can be used as a stand alone printer, and the Wifi model will work directly from Ipods & Cell phones. Would I recommend this printer? Absolutely YES. in fact since I bought this one over half the people in our photo club have also bought one. I primarily use 4x6 paper, which is $7.00 per 100sheet for brilliant glossy white at Walmart. I have not priced the ink at Walmart but at Staples the ink is $19.89 for the color and $9.98 for the Black, but staples also gives a $2 rebate for any used cartridge you turn in. (Up to 10 empties per month). I just found a website this morning for cheaper ink cartridges for almost all printers.
