help...big contractor screw up! Need advice...

I have a small master bath that I wanted to do as a spa remodel. I bought beautiful crema marfil tile that is supposed to go from floor to ceiling with a decorative glass border halfway up. The tile subcontractor screwed up the tile job and it needs to be redone. The contractor wants to tile over the first tile with new creama marfil tiles. This seems wrong to me and and a makeshift solution that is easier and cheaper for the contractor. It seems to me the right way to do this is to remove the first tile job and then install the new tiles. I have all top of the line materials and want the job done right...I've waited a long time to do this.

Anyone have any experience with this?

Make him do it over the correct way. I would not let him put tile over tile. I would be afraid over time the second layer of tile would come loose. Besides it was his error he should make it right.

I agree -- they need to do it right, not a jury-rigged patch job.

viche, The "crankcase" is the accepted term for the reservoir of the engine oil, as it is on your car, too. No need to be apologetic...most of us "engine-heads" are just on here to help when it's remotely possible that we can. As I mentioned in my prior post, your engine will not even notice the bit of slightly different oil...absolutely no need to change your fresh oil again in the Spring. I mentioned grounding the plug to the cylinder while cranking to have you avoid any possible damage to your ignition circuitry. The very high voltage generated by the solid-state ignition module wants somewhere to go to ground....like a lightning strike does. You want it to go to a common grounded piece of your mower, or it will try to find a path of least resistance....and possibly damage a component part of your Toro ignition system. By grounding your plug (hex or thread part) to a cylinder fin, that risk is eliminated (is that clear as mud? ~grin~) You "just dangled" the plug the last time, and got away with it. Next time...you may not. Now relax, throw another log on the fire, and enjoy the Holiday Season. It's a bit less than 13 weeks 'til Spring! Regards, Hal

Its a shame that in trying to create something good, you have to go through this . If you had an understanding with your contractor as to the procedure you expected them to follow, you have every right to expect them to perform as agreed if they want to be paid as agreed. I would ask them what they intend to do to make this right. Wait till they respond and base your next step on that. Once they respond, I would at the least tell them to remove the erosion fabric to rake and roll the soil as agreed, and try to get them to add additional seed at that time. while they have the fabric up, I would purchase more of a seed mix from a good local supplier and incorporate that into the soil as well before replacing the fabric. Typically, the grass seed is the least expensive componant of the prairie seed mix, and you are better off underplanting grasses than over planting. Grasses can always be interseeded later. The squeeky wheel is the one that gets oiled... This does not need to be a disaster.

Yes, we feel comfortable about the drainage problem being fixed if they replace the sections. The other option is to add additional drainage which would mean tearing out a section of the yard that is already finished and looking good, besides the fact that it will add maintenance and possible areas that could clog in the future. So having the driveway pitched correctly is the correct solution. I think they can do that by replacing the bottom sections, or by replacing the whole thing. This is a question of whether the mismatched concrete will eventually look the same, and how to best manage the color difference if we have a partial re-do. Actually, we really only need to change out one section, maybe two. We thought adding another might actually be good; that a bigger section that looks different might be a better option than a smaller one. Thanks so much for your thoughts, everyone. Thanks everyone for your input. I left her a voice mail and an email this morning and no word from her yet... mindstorm: good point, which I had thought about too. But the manufacturer couldn't have just "made up" these dimensions, and I assumed the KD sent them more specs than just the rendering I posted on photobucket. She then emailed me a "sketch" yesterday from the manufacturer and asked me, "Didn't I send this to you?" It showed the openings as they appear on my (incorrect) cabinet. I never saw that sketch until yesterday. When she saw that in February, I'd imagine she would've realized it was wrong, or at least ask another KD's opinion on it? Plus, her comment about the specs saying it should be at least 32" from the floor, which is merely a recommendation for a single wall oven installation, that makes me wonder about her experience as well. live_wire_oak: Although I didn't have a drink last night (we had DD's instrumental concert at school), we find both our children have sleep overs at their friends' houses tonight, so we actually have a date night! We're going to look at light fixtures, but then we WILL go out to dinner and have those drinks!! Thanks again, y'all are great.

I agree don't let them tile over tile - also - if they screwed it up once, what makes you think it will be OK the second time? Especially given how they wanted to fix it.

I did tile over tile. It has only been 5 years with no problems so longer term....we shall see

Tile over tile is not a problem with respect to one layer adhering to the other. Where it might be a problem is if it causes any "elevation" or "depth" problems in places like electrical boxes for switches or outlets, or windows and doors, where a second layer might cause a problem with trimming them, or the second layer being too think where it meets the aready installed trim. But if there are no problems with anything like this, I wouldn't have a problem at all with two layers of tile-- especially stone.

amr94. I did tile over tile on the floor, but the contractor put down cement board (durock) over the entire old floor first, cemented it down and let it dry for 24 hours before installing the new tile. it did raise the height of the floor but wasn't a big deal for the floor. Had to cut the bottom of the bathroom door so it would clear. But this was a 50 year old tile job I covered up with new updated tile. I don't know about the walls. I personally wouldn't want tile over tile on the walls. I'd make them rip it out and do it right, after all you didn't pay a cut right price so you should not accept a cut right job. that's just my opionion. Hope things work out

That's asking for trouble. The ONLY way Durock should be attached to the structure is with screws or nails.

You could look far back for my posts :) But you'd see that when this happened to me I made them rip it out and pay for someone else to do it.

It depends on how big the error was. Tile in the wrong place or just a total botch job install. in the first situation I'd let them redo it. In the second (which was mine) I wasn't going to do it twice with the same idiot. I made them pay for a real installer to fix the problem and redo it as well as buy the tile.

And why did I make them pay someone else...cuz once a long time ago I was a nice guy and let an idiot installer do a job over when they did it wrong the first time...and the second...and the third and the FOURTH! I haven't been nice since.

The contractor is going to hire another installer, recommended by the tile showroom, to redo the job. Supposedly this installer is excellent so I have to give him credit for that. Now, he's talking about possibly grinding down and re-beveling the uneven tiles. I'm worried that this will damage the tiles. Igloochic, I agree, why should I be the nice guy and make concessions when this is entirely their fault! Big pow wow today... we'll see.

I hope you made them redo the job from scratch. The retiling with or without grinding tiles down is a bad idea.
