It obviously doesn't match the drawing. They'll remake you one. Don't fret, this too shall pass...

I agree, you signed off on the design, which is not what was delivered. While this is so frustrating, it will work out for you. The cabinet(s) should and I'm sure will be fixed. Hang in there!

How long has she been designing? That is a newbie mistake for sure! It's not right and would also be considered hazardous! I can't believe the factory didn't question this order!

Check the dimensions of the oven cabinet design that you signed off on versus the one that has been delivered. If it is off, they will make a new one at no expense to you.

If it is what you signed off on, then it is between you and your KD.

That is why you have to double check ALL dimensions yourself (even though you pay a KD, but there are ALWAYS communication mistakes).

This is a beginner mistake for sure----or a mistake from someone who doesn't cook! I'm not familiar with Starmark cabinets, but unless it's a 100% custom line, what you're proposing will have to be "created" on site by a good installer with a regular double oven cabinet, some plywood, and some fillers, or separate side panels and fillers to "create your own on site cabinet". It's not a big deal with a good installer and a KD who can communicate what needs to be done, but as there has already been some miscommunication, I'd be on top of this as to exactly what will be coming from the factory and exactly what will be expected to be modified in the field. You also need to double check the electric box locations for each oven are at the correct height for the way it needs to be rather than the way the current oven cabinet appears.

Yes, it can be frustrating, but the best insurance on any design work of any kind is a tape measure in your own hand and a notebook full of dimensions. No one cares about your project like you do, and even if you have contractors that you trust on site working for you, simple mistakes can still be made. Double check all dimensions of everything!

I would be very surprised if your KD doesn't take care of this for you. I was in the process of getting granite bids when I noticed the drawing for one of my walls didn't match the specs. Even though the cabinets had already gone into productionm, they immediately ordered a new cabinet for me. Please don't worry about it until you really have to. Let us know how it worked out for you.

I have to come to the defense of your KD. They submitted the signed drawing to the manufacturer, they didn't make the cabinets. The person who handled your job at the factory is to blame because the incorrect configuration to your oven cabinet was built. The factory should have caught the mistake before the cabinets were boxed and/or loaded for delivery. I'll bet your KD will be just as surprised as you were and will immediately contact the manufacturer on your behalf. You'll be set right, you'll just be out production time for the new cabinet. Keep your chin up!

Reshal, cabinet companies just build what the KD designs and orders. There isn't a lot of thinking going on on a production line. Now, an individual cabinet maker, that's another story. Cabinet makers are usually intimately involved in design and production and most likely would have asked for clarification from the KD before they began construction.

All of us have been newbies at one time or another and have made mistakes. Some of them whoppers like this one. :) But, since none of us is mistake proof, it's all about how the mistake is handled that is important---by the professionaland the customer. If it were one of my jobs, I'd fess up, apologize, contact the manufacturer and put a rush on a reorder. That would still take 2 weeks or so, even for a rush---and that's why it's important not to do any demolition until all of your orders are in and checked over. It's the rare shipment that won't need something reordered, so exhibiting patience when the inevitable mistake does happen will make the whole experience less of an emotional roller coaster for the customer. Breathe deep, smile understandingly, and politely insist that it be corrected as soon as possible. Then go have a drink!

In agreemnet with everyone else. They will reorder the correct cabinet for you. Although frustrating to be sure, a minor problem at best. Good luck.....

What's the problem? The cabinet delivered is quite different from the drawing. The only way the drawing could be right is if ALL the other cabinets including the countertop heights are wrong.

If the drawing refers to what the KD drew up, how could this even be a KD problem? The draft is entirely different to the cabinet you got ... I'm sure that your KD will have the factory correct it. However, I don't understand the general villification that hte poor KD is getting - is her drawing that is right there on the OP's website unacceptable too????

mindstorm: good point, which I had thought about too. But the manufacturer couldn't have just "made up" these dimensions, and I assumed the KD sent them more specs than just the rendering I posted on photobucket. She then emailed me a "sketch" yesterday from the manufacturer and asked me, "Didn't I send this to you?" It showed the openings as they appear on my (incorrect) cabinet. I never saw that sketch until yesterday. When she saw that in February, I'd imagine she would've realized it was wrong, or at least ask another KD's opinion on it? Plus, her comment about the specs saying it should be at least 32" from the floor, which is merely a recommendation for a single wall oven installation, that makes me wonder about her experience as well.

live_wire_oak: Although I didn't have a drink last night (we had DD's instrumental concert at school), we find both our children have sleep overs at their friends' houses tonight, so we actually have a date night! We're going to look at light fixtures, but then we WILL go out to dinner and have those drinks!!

you know my BIL - the cook - is 6'5" tall and none of his ovens are that high. lol!

After a lot of back and forth, the company where we ordered our cabinets from agreed that the kitchen designer should have caught/questioned the extreme height of the wall oven openings in our 96" tall wall cabinet and have agreed to reorder and foot the bill. They're trying to fast-track it through the manufacturer to get it to us as soon as possible.

This could have gone either way, and by them handling it correctly and proving good customer service, they have a fan and lots of free positive word of mouth from me. Thanks for all your input and advice. I'm much calmer about it all now!

I would find out the manufacturer's recomendation for the height (from floor to bottom of lower oven) of their DOUBLE oven models. After all, this is what you effectively will have. The height of a single oven from the floor is irrelevant.

To add to the confusion, the appliance manufacturer will set above floor recommendations for single ovens and microwaves that regularly put them ABOVE counter height, when they are routinely used in below counter applications. And then, in their own photo galleries will show them in below counter applications.

It is not always clear from the specs as to whether this recommendation is made due to some physical requirement of the appliance itself or not. I blame the manufacturers for this aspect of what happened in your case.
