Still traveling, and my dog isn't well...

About five days ago, Luna went from feeling great to running out of steam and not wanting to eat much. I fear it's the beginning of the end for her. This isn't completely unexpected, although I don't feel prepared. I've never had to look up an Emergency Vet Hospital for every town I'm going to be in before, but I'm doing it now. I'm writing this with a lump in my throat. If you have any good thoughts to spare, I would appreciate whatever you have for her (and me). I know she won't be getting any better, but I really don't want her to suffer. We're still living day to day; and now moment to moment. I'm cherishing every tail-wag...

Oh Kathy, how sad, my heart is breaking for the baby. We all agree that it is so hard to deal with. Its been 12 years and our family still feel a pain in our hearts when we think of our beautiful Chowder Mae.

I hope she hangs in there until you get home. It would be hard to refer to your otherwise good trip as the one where....

Since your research suggests they like acid soil, MissSherry, I would be hesitant to add lime to the soil, with will raise the PH. I have managed to get Spicebush to grow 3 years and it always dies the 4th year - weird, huh? I planted my current one in the front yard amid pine tree, honeysuckle, hackberry, etc., so I can better monitor it. I have also been feeding with an organic fert called LadyBug John's (Austin, Texas origin). It is a 3-1.5-2 ratio, which is the ratio recommended by Al on the container forum. He's a physicist who has soil and nutrients down to a science, literally. Anyway, this organic fert is more of a soil builder than a plant fertilizer with micronutes and all. I have been giving in a 1/2 feed about every 3 or 4 waterings. It has responded well to this. My Spicebush is located where it gets shade to dappled shade to some West sun (only about 1 hour), like it would if it grew at a forest edge. So far, so good, but it's only the 2nd year. The true test would be the 4th year for me. Sandy would be helpful since she has had hers for a few years now. I'll be interested to see if she responds here, too. The problems with Sassafras is that it is so hard to transplant. I've tried 3 times and failed. If you could get a very small seedling or seeds to start with, it might be a better solution. I don't think the seed is viable for very long, with fresh working best. If you know someone who has Sassafras and get either fresh seeds or a small volunteer, that would be great! Susan

Our PeeWee woke up in the middle of the night gasping to take a breath. We rushed her to an Emergency vet hospital and they immediately put her on oxygen and had her in ICU for a day and a half. We learned she had congestive heart failure and major kidney problems but were told that with meds and special food we might have bought her anywhere from 6 months to a year. Her lifestyle would be quite different than before her episode but she would be pain free. Well, it was obvious to us that though she was in no pain she had no energy and barely ate or drank anything. She might have had time, but she had no quality of life. I was so afraid she'd have another episode and would die gasping for air. I couldn't make a decision and prayed she would die on her own. PeeWee slept in a playpen at the foot of our bed because of incontinence problems and in addition to clean towels I would place the nightgown I had worn the previous night so she'd have my scent close to her. I awoke around 2:30 AM to check her and her breathing was shallow but she was comfortable. She was sleeping in the far corner of the playpen. I checked her again at 5:15 and she was gone. It was especially heartbreaking when I realized she had made it to my nightgown and passed away curled up on it. My heart still aches when I think of the effort it took her to reach that spot, but I guess it was important to her to be close to me in some way. I'm so sorry you're going through this. If you love your furbaby, and I know you do, this is a monumental decision you'll be having to make. Hopefully, Abby will pass away painlessly in her sleep. Mona

Melissa, I haven't been in GardenWeb in a very long time - and even then, I'm usually a lurker in the Garden forums. We are starting our remodel on our kitchen, master bath and bedroom, so I wanted to see if there were any ideas out there that I could steal because it feels so overwhelming right now, trying to make the right decisions. Almost every single thing has done beautifully this year. Flowers have been exceptional...echinacea, daylilies, gaura, zinnias, salvia, etc. All the veggies are doing well except the okra! It would be fine except in the spring, a raccoon (we presume) plucked almost every seedling, put them in a pile at the end of the row. I replanted but for some reason, most of the seeds didn’t germinate. So I don’t have many plants and some are way behind the original few that survived. So I have had to supplement my pitiful harvest with farmer’s market purchases. We were on vacation when the dreaded June beetles hit, so some of my flowers look a bit ragged but otherwise are surviving. And I have to give up a bit of low hanging fruit to the possums and raccoons that raid the tomatoes all the time. They never bother the cherry tomatoes though.

I am so sorry to hear this, that is one thing I told DH after we left Red River Steakhouse and were on our way home after meeting you, we didn't get to meet Luna. I just didn't think of it at the time because you were parked in the back and us in the front.

Not that I needed any convincing, but you all are the kindest, most generous people I know.

I even had an unexpected ''drive-by'' phone call...from me to Lindac, returned to me later by her. Now, we have never met (yet), but have spoken on the phone once before. I called another friend of mine also named Linda, and dialed Lindac by mistake. What does she do? Calls me back (I explain what happened), and asks me about my dog. I did feel better after speaking to her...maybe there are no accidents.

If she is still with us when we finally meet again Karen, I'll make sure you get to meet her if you'd still like to. Thanks everyone for your advice, belly rubs, scratches, good thoughts and kindness. I guess I needed to unload...I appreciate every one of you!

Glad you are able to have her with you. I always worry about my pets when we are on trips away from them -- even when I know they are being well taken care of, I just don't like being away from them. Luna will be in my thoughts.

Thank you everyone for your care, concern, and for checking in.

Luna seems to be feeing a little bit better today (at this moment). She's going in and out of having more/less energy. I'm still getting smiles, tailwags, and a little interest in playing with her favorite ball/duck at certain times but she doesn't have her usual vim and vigor. I asked her if she wanted a treat, and she stood right up and looked around for it, so that's good. (That wasn't the case two days ago.) Her coat hasn't changed and her gums look okay, so it doesn't seem like she's bleeding internally. She's beginning to act like she first did before when she was diagnosed with cancer, although nothing seems dire at this point. Of course we'll take her to a vet, when her condition requires it. Right now, I really believe they won't tell me anything I don't already know. The vet only gave her three months to live last May, so I feel like she's beaten the odds to be here almost a year later.

At this moment, anything I can do to make her happy is hers. I'm glad she's here with us too. I wouldn't have it any other way!

My daughter's dogs, Coal and Sugarfoot send hugs and best wishes for Luna. Coal is a black and tan mini long haired dachshund and Sugarfoot is a piebald long haired standard dachshund.The piebald is white with black spots the size of a tennis ball on the body and lots of "ticking" or streaks of black and brown on the body and legs. The mask on her face is black and brown with a white streak up between the eyes to the back of her head. Coal is much more daintier than Sugarfoot.

Claire, I have a feeling that she may have a touch of travelers symdrome. Car rides, water, differant surroundings may be affecting her.

Peppi, you may be right, although she's traveled with us quite a lot from day one. I won't even begin to tell you how much ''stuff'' she travels with, except for the Pet Tent that folds flat which we set up for her in each new place so she has something familiar to sleep in. I would absolutely LOVE if you were right about this!

Daylilydazed, your dogs sound really cute. Longhaired dachshunds always make me smile.

Jo and Peppi, you're probably right about calling Linda. Once I got over my embarassment about dialing the ''wrong number'', it was nice to realize I actually felt better after talking to her!

David and Sally, I really hope she's still with us when we come through there. (She would love to meet you if she's anything like her normal self; she always considers herself to be part of the party.) We'll hope for the best!

Claire, I'm glad LindaC made you feel better, and that Luna is feeling better today too. Like Peppi, I'm hoping it's just a bit of "jet lag" from travelling.

Anyway, I was just checking in to see how things were going and I'm glad it's better, or at least stable for the time being.
