redguard on drywall

Hello, I would like to know if it's ok to apply redguard

to drywall? I have 3 walls around my bath/shower that iI will be applying tile.

I know that it's really not recommended, but that is how my guest tub/shower was done. Of course, it only gets used about 3 - 4 times a year. I would use Kerdi over drywall or cement board and Red Guard if it was a high use shower.

Drywall is no longer allowed for use in "wet" locations, such as shower or tub enclosures. Even the innocuous "greenboard" is disqualified and can only be used outside of the actual enclosure. Magnesium oxide building panels are starting to find their way into residential construction, but many municipalities still haven't decided if they will allow them so don't invest in that route until you've discussed it with your local building inspector's office.
Redgard is suitable as a moisture barrier over cementitious backer units(Wonderboard, Durock, Hardibacker, Fiberorck, etc/ aka CBU)) but if you aren't planning to install a recessed shower niche, then you can save an awful lot of money but simply installing an uninterrupted sheet of 6mil clear plasting sheeting BEHIND the CBU. If you are planning a recessed niche or some other change-of-plane feature like a window sill or bench then stick with the roll-on membrane and follow the manufacturer's instructions completely!

What kind of screws did he use ? I'd ask him (or print out ) the install instructions for DensShield. - I'm pretty certain you'll find language that says something like : do not use drywall compound ! This is the manuf. instructions and needs to supersede any and all of his experience, intuition, and "I've never had problem yet doing it this way" A larger issue that no one has touched on is the Redgard over this stuff. RG will protect the screws and drywall mud from moisture ( if he applies it thick enough - he won't . Ask him if he has wet film gauge or even knows what one is) -but- I'm not sure RG will play nice with the acrylic coating of the DensShield. It may, but it's not an accepted assembly and really shouldn't be considered. Let him test it on his everyday shower. And don't let him tell you he has. Those products haven't been out long enough for him to have dreamed up this concoction and have a twenty year test bed from which to evaluate their compatibility and performance. Neither company is going to warrant the shower used as such. If he's so confident , and you still want to roll the dice - have him purchase a performance bond for this frankenshower.

Thanks for your response! I assume that our plans did (though I'm not sure) and our plans were certainly approved so I don't understand whats happening here at all. My contractor is equally perplexed and says he's never heard of this type of installation nor of this being required. The wall in question isn't a shared wall, the other side of it is the exterior of our unit. We also had a permit from the beginning. For some more color on why things have taken so long: a good 7-8 weeks passed with no work being done because our property management company and HOA kept asking for additional documentation in order to approve the addition of a skylight AFTER the HOA president initially told us that she consulted the management and that we were in the clear to include the skylight in our plans (which we did and we began demo. When it was time to make the hole in the ceiling we reached out because we had a question about something and THAT was when they suddenly had a problem with it). The president AND the property manager were flakey, they'd take days to weeks to respond to our calls/emails and after requesting one thing, they'd come back a week later requesting something else, multiple times. It was ridiculous. We've also probably lost a total of 4 weeks due to various materials we needed on back-order. A couple more weeks lost to poor scheduling of workers by our contractor. His father who lives abroad also passed away during this job so he went away for 3 weeks and practically nothing got done while he was gone. The rest was BS from the city like this. I can't even begin to tell you the shenanigans we've had to go through with the city...waiting a week or two for an inspector to come only to have the inspector ding us for something that wasn't mentioned the previous time, etc. Oh and I forgot to mention the work was only for our master bath/closet and the guest bath (we only have 2 bathrooms total) and we've been living in the unit this whole time so work on both concurrently wasn't an option. Help! What can I put with these marble herringbone tile in the shower?

I can see why white glass tiles wouldn't work because they are generally more green than white when applied to the wall. Sure you could do plain white porcelain tile if that's what you want and think you like. I think the issue you have is trying to match the white of a porcelain tile with the "not white" of the whitest of your herringbone. That's why I suggested the same marble as the herringbone but in a larger format tile. If you like a glass tile, you might try looking for a light grey glass tile that would come close to the greys in your marble ( I keep calling your herringbone marble but maybe it isn't). Here are a few samples....some of them I think are too dark but you get the idea... These first few are from Tilebar and you can get samples for $5 so you might try ordering a few to see if anything works for you. These last 2 are from Emser. These both are the same tile but two different colours of grey. You can see that the lower one is much more blue than the one directly below. You won't know until you can see them in person if one of these might work. If you are going to use glass tile, pay careful attention to the material used to set the tile and the grout to be used. The manufacturer will have specific instructions on those things. I cannot comment at all on the waterproofing questions that folks above are asking you....but the point I'm making is if you put a glass tile over that red waterproofing, you're going to see the red through the tile if it is light coloured and I don't think you're going to like it. So do your homework and be sure you know how to proceed if you choose glass in the end.

Here in North Vancouver you can not use Redguard over Drywall in a bathroom shower renovation. This wet zone should be waterproofed from 6' down in my opinion.

Drywall Green or White has no place in a shower's wet zone. The problem is the lowest edge where it ties into the tub. Many people chaulk this and it traps moisture and the drywall wicks the water up and the assembly fails.

There are many ways of improving this system but a more solid backer board like a cement board or Green Eboard is recommended by me. And I know how to build these rooms bullet proof.

Kerdi over drywall as well is recommended by some online but if you live in North Vancouver this is not an option. Always call your city hall to check.

Conisder using a topical Liquid membrane especially for a busy shower because it is far easier to install than Kerdi - my opinion. If this is a high end fancy pants steamer - then yes I would look at Kerdi. But most likely go with Nobel TS as I feel it's twice the product for the same price - most times (my costs anyways).

I also like that Nobel TS can be installed with a broader range of setting materials. Un Modified thin set can be hard to find and often I find is past it's prime. Do not use mortar more than 6 months old in my opinion (and others).

Learn how to read those dates codes on your setting materials...

Take your time.

Ask this of anyone dispensing advice;

"How long have you been incorporated and how much insurance do you carry?"

And the number one rule in building a shower is always "Flood test your work!"

It's easy - I'll teach you how....
