What's the exact message you get from Norton?

well most any decent antivirus or antimalware program will protest installing of a keylogger program that is exactly what they are supposed to do. They are on the pc to protect you from things like keyloggers.
I personally would NOT want a keylogger on my pc for any reason, just way too much can go wrong with who gets what info and how they use it, because it will be recording every ones keystrokes.

I would find other ways to watch the behavior of the young ones, like no computers in private rooms, only in public rooms where you can actually watch them. Definitely setting up limited user accounts on the computer they use and use software that blocks undesirable sites. For your own protection make sure they do not have access to the admin account or password.

Perhaps installing in safe mode may be the way to go.

There might be a history here, or maybe just plain parental concern. Tough call as I too don't like keyloggers, but if the parents went to the expense, and gave you directions it could be best to follow them.

There's way too many other things to worry about when you are in country than to have to deal with an occurrence you thought you had taken the steps to prevent.

If you have never faced death you have no idea what it looks like.

Their support page recommends disabling the a/v to download and install. I agree with most here, not a proponent of keyloggers myself. However, if you elect to go with their recommendation, I'd take the unit off the network while installing without active a/v.

Google "Open DNS" and take a look at that. This is a free program which can be set up to filter certain kinds of sites. Many libraries and businesses use this product. I have it on my computers, and, believe it or not, it sometimes will not allow certain websites to open if they fall within the parameters of the filters I have set up. I don't even have children using my comps, but I use it to help speed up my internet access.

Disable Norton. Install the keylogger. Run a manual scan and when the keylogger is detected, "allow" it.

I would not install it. If you do - turn off your AV and then install --- this is dangerous because you have absolutely no idea what else it is doing when your AV is turned off --- then activate your AV and make sure you list it as an 'exception' before your anti virus runs (you can manually scan and allow as previous poster suggested)

Keep the computers in public rooms only.

This would only be of "benefit" on your computers - they still have access to everything at schools and libraries.

You have a tough call for sure. Are the nieces/nephews difficult to control or are the parents simply trying to protect you? Isn't it possible to keep the computer in a living area where privacy is minimal? I ask because if these young people find out about the keylogger you will have lost their trust and respect for the rest of your lives.

Teens are experts on all subjects known to mankind and more, what they do not know personally they can glean from a huge support staff which includes almost every member of their school.

Also as teens live 27 hours a day, nine days a week how and when will you find the time to scan the mass of data recorded by the keylogger with any privacy?

I would think the first step would be to tell the girls about the keylogger including who directed its installation, and the purpose of its use. The then positive result is the application becomes primarily a deterrent rather than a detection program.

Placing the system in a public area is of course a wonderful thought, but protection only results when there is someone in the room or very close by to monitor activity.

I still get the inkling that there is some history here.

Brilliant idea DA, that way everyone is on the same page.

I asked the question early on if there is a limited user account set up for the teenagers, that is NUMBER ONE on the list of what to do no matter what else is done.

I also think what you are doing in taking care of these young people is fabulous and thank God for people like you and their parents who are fighting for all of us, Thank you all.

I also would ask in reference to the actual computer, does this computer belong to you or to them? This would make all the difference to me. I would not ever put a keylogger on my machine, now if it is theirs that will become their problem. A keylogger is malware plain and simple, you do not know what else a program like that may be installing on your computer and the way they install themselves to be hard to detect and remove makes it all the more reason NOT to trust them or put them on your pc willingly. How do you really know all the info it is capturing is not going out to someone else also? I do not find companies that make that type of product to be the most stand up trustworthy.

I agree about the time factor, someone has to sit there and read all that info that the keylogger will spew out.
And remember it will not just record their keystrokes it will record all of them, so who ever has the job of reading the info will be reading the info that every one that typed at that pc wrote, big huge can of worms just waiting to be opened from my view. I would not want anyone reading my stuff. Also if you have others over and they use that pc adult or child their info will be viewable, that can really quickly jump into a sticky situation, you would have to tell them before they used that pc that everything they type will be seen.

I have visitors come here often and I let them use my computers, I have accounts set up just for that, limited user accounts, and I would never consider spying on what they typed or did, plus you would be seeing passwords too.

There are so many better ways to work with this kind of situation and not use a keylogger which is an extreme breach of privacy on all parts.

Again if they are using admin accounts or have access to the admin account and password you are giving them the key to the castle and putting any type of program on there is useless because they have the admin rights to disable it.

And I totally agree that they have to be told it is going to be on the pc, none of us know the story behind this or the history but not telling them would be a huge risk of losing their trust and it could hurt them alot. Not a quick and easy decision to make.

They know about the keylogger,the parents use one too.
In the military you do not have regular working hours and some days they are alone in the house for a few hours after school.
They're good girls, both 15 years old. Yes, twins in a bad age.:-)))
I promised that i keep an eye on them.
It's not easy for the kids or the parents to leave them with someone else.
They're on "Facebook" like any other teenager and i would like their life to be as normal as possible during the deployment and.... protect them and my family.
