Need help: FD fridge with icemaker below and water in door?

My Sears POS top freezer has quite. That is another rant but I need a replacement. I have a Samsung FD but with the ice in the door it suffers from running out of ice.

I have only 33 inches width in my beach place and I want a bottom freezer with the ice maker in the freezer to maximize ice production and I would like water in the door.

Sears has a model in their computer 78342 that replaces 77242 but it doesn't show online. It sells for $2,000 22.6 cu ft. Is there any other brand/model in white that is only 33" wide and 69" tall?

We just went thru the same torment of trying to find a 33" wide FD in white w/external water dispenser & ice maker in freezer. We found the GE Profile PFSF2MJXWW at 68 5/8" tall. It just came out in June 2008. We had it delivered/installed 2 weeks ago & love it. The ice bin holds plenty of ice and keeps up just fine for us. We had company for this week & made sure we made ice prior to their visit. The ice maker was able to keep up with the 5 of us during the summer. This model sells for under $1,700. It does not meet the energy star rating. So look at the kwh usage per year. Don't look at the $ per year cost rating on the energy tags as the rates can use the 2005, 2006, 2007 year rates. All in all this fridge will cost us about $9 more per year at PA's 2008 kwh rate then the energy star FD's, but this model was about $1,500 cheaper in cost then the ones that met the energy star rating.

Amana & Maytag make similar models that should fit the size of your space too. But we didn't hear good things about these models. LG discountinued their 33" wide. Sears just came out with the FD Trio's at 33" wide but they all have the ice & water dispensers on the fridge door.

Tough choices. The GE report is tempting but Consumers has them as repair prone for bottom freezer models. Sears is having a 20% off Kenmore Elite sale plus an additional 10% off for their friends and family sale tonight. For $1400 we're going to give the Kenmore a try. I am a bit leery of buying a brand new model but the choices are few and this model looks nice. It is energy star rated so I wonder who manufactures it for Sears.

I'll report back but there is still time to change my mind if anyone else has a different model to recommend...

We have had a Maytag MFF2558KES unit for about 18 months and it has worked flawlessly for us. We have little kids and felt that the in-door dispensors would be too much of a temptation. Plus, neither my wife nor I have ever had a fridge with the dispensers and didn't feel we would ever use them. Also, we have read terrible things about the reliability of those features. Although it has an automatic ice making device in the freezer, we don't use that either. Overall, we have been extremely happy with our unit. A friend of ours has the same unit with the in-door dispensers. She's had them repaired 4 times since she bought her unit. What is really messed up is that when the dispensers have failed on her unit, the entire fridge has stopped working every time. Maytag just writes her a $200 check for new groceries. Seems like a pretty inefficient way to do business.

Same exact problem. I bought mine 8 years ago. A year ago I called a service man, he got it to stop ($200) after several visits (replaced sensors, mother board, etc.), and less than a year later, I'm having issues again. Top of the line. I am replacing it. After reading everything I've read here AND talking to others, this is the worse appliance out there. I wish someone would do a class action law suit...count me in! I called another service man and he said he won't touch it. He told me I could find someone to fix it but if I were smart, get rid of it and never buy a Samsung refrigerator again. Of course I won't. I'm going to start shopping tomorrow. I just hope it holds up until I can buy another one (I have to ring the water build up from under the tray every few days). I hear there's a 6 week delivery wait and appliances are hard to get right now, refrigerators in particular...I'm not sure if this is true or not?

I went to Pacific Sales, the local appliance specialist store in my area, with my measurements this weekend and it was kind of a mess. They had all these fridges but with no measurements about their dimensions. So, I approached one of their sales staff with my measurements for help, hoping they could narrow down my search to the fridges that would fit. Instead, the salesman said I should look around at all the fridges, find one that I liked, and then they'd tell me if it fit or not. Instead of looking at all the fridges, shouldn't I just look at the ones that fit? Anyways, I'd find one that I'd like and then have to ask that salesman to measure it because I didn't bring along a tape measure. Finally, I found one that he said would fit. Only, I later learned it didn't fit because it was too tall since he didn't measure the fridge hinges on top. I know I'm probably making this harder than it needs to be, but I'm just worried about buying a fridge that will turn out not to fit or something. I have to buy a fridge in the next couple of days, and I'm afraid I'm rushing into buying one and making a stupid mistake with the dimensions or something silly like that. Thank you all for your feedback. Craftlady, we drink tons of water (I have four kids!) so having the water on the door is preferable but I just wish we didn't have to have the ice dispenser on the door also - that is a PITA. With our current fridge, they are always spilling ice all over the floor as it shoots out. I'd rather do w/o that feature. I hope you like yours - I agree that the ice on the door seems to be the biggest problem with any fridge. Newcastle, I'm glad to hear that you really like yours and that you've had it for a while. It's rare to hear positive feedback from someone who is actually happy with their product. A friend of mine responded to my question on facebook and said explicitly not to get a Samsung as they were getting a refund after having it only four months. UGH. But I understand that any model is going to have its lemons so I was looking for someone who is actually happy with their purchase. I'm glad that yours has not caused you any problems! Wizardmom, did you get the one that has the refrigerated drawer? I thought that was particularly cool, especially since I have four kids who are constantly going into the fridge for snacks. I also make a lot of sandwiches, so in the mornings when making their lunches, it would be nice to just pull out that separate drawer and have everything right there. Dh wasn't as enamored with that option and preferred the other model with the touch tone screen, but that just seems like one more complicated feature that could easily break. I don't really need a fridge that can have a photo slideshow! I hope your new fridge!
