Is there a counter-depth, side-by-side without a door icemaker?
Comments (7)As someone else looking for a new frig, if you've had serious back problems (and back surgery), bending over to pull out a freezer drawer is definitely NOT easier than opening the freezer door of a SxS frig while standing up. I love the convenience of the refrigerator section being in the top of a FD frig...but those pull out drawers are the deal killer for me. Reaching down to get ice out of one would be excruciatingly painful. The perfect frig for someone like me who has back problems (are you listening manufacturers?) is a large frig section on top, small middle drawer containing the ice maker and ice cubes, and a bottom freezer drawer that I can open with my FOOT. (so I don't have to bend over and pull it open.) Happy Thanksgiving!...See Moreside by side fridges or go commercial?
Comments (11)The link below is US DOE Energy Star list of commercial coolers and freezers. It shows daily kwh usage, multiply by 365 x [your local $/kwh rate] for the estimated annual energy cost. I don't know what ambient temp and usage this rating assumes, but it's close enough for government work. The list is hard to read online, print it out and put on your reading glasses - or download to Excel. Just for fun, I looked up a pair of True 54'' wide two oor reach-in coolers, one with glass doors (T49G) and one with solid doors (T49), both with 44 cu ft capacity. The glass door model is rated at 6.3 kwh/day, the solid door is rated 3.5 kwh/day. At my local energy rate (appx $0.11/kwh) that's $253/yr and $141/yr. The Frigidaire Commercial cooler is also on the list. 32'' wide, 18 cu ft, and the solid door version is rated at 1.15 kw/day. You could put two side-by-side in 64'', get 36 cu ft, and pay $98/yr at my local rate. Seems like a pretty efficient unit, and relatively quiet too. Then I compared that to the cost of running two residential units. That Energy Star list is here and is also downloadable to Excel. http://www.energystar.gov/index.cfm?fuseaction=refrig.display_products_html I picked a Bosch (B36T71) bottom-freezer (I don't know if it has French doors). Two of these combined have 40 cu ft capacity and use 448 x 2 / 365 = 2.45 kwh/day. At $0.11/kwh, that's $99/yr. But, that unit is 36'' wide, so two will take up 72'' width versus the 54'' for the True. I don't know if these are the most energy-efficient units on the lists, I just picked some brands that I recognized. Hope that helps. Personally I'm planning for a space about 55'' wide to accomodate various possible refrigerators, since commercial units don't have standardized dimensions like residential units. I'll ignore the gap, hang a broom in it, or install a small filler. Oh, one other thing I've noticed about commercial units - they sometimes (often? usually?) have doors that can open fully without requiring additional width/clearance. I assume this is to allow multiple coolers/freezers to sit side-by-side. If you were planning to recess your refrigeration fully into the cabinetry (for a quasi-built-in look) that might be useful. Comments (4)We own a Kenmore elite that is 32 and 7/8 inches wide. I am not sure if that will fit in a 33 inch opening, but it slides in and out of our 36 inch cabinet easily. It is not counter depth, nor is it side-by-side. Are you sure you want counter depth? It is 35 inches deep, and it is a French door with bottom freezer. We previously owned a side-by-side, and found it didn't work well for us -- the fridge compartment was skinny (not wide enough for a pizza box) and really deep, so things would get lost in the back. Our current fridge is just as deep, but it's easier to find things because it is well lit inside, and it's much easier to maneuver things out from the back without emptying a whole shelf, because each shelf slides out independently. It does have an ice maker in the freezer, but there is no on-the-door ice dispenser, and the cold water dispenser is not on-the-door either.... you have to open the left-hand fridge door, and then push a button on the front left interior lip (which takes two hands). But we didn't use our previous fridge's on-the-door dispenser much at all, so for us, that was not a big drawback. We have had ours for 4 or 5 years, I think, and we have been very happy with it. Comments (22)We bought a Fisher & Paykel 4 door refrigerator last December and have been very happy w the freezer layout and the flexibility. Having the lower right compartment on fridge would give you ample crisper space. It has very good temperature control and food stays fresher much longer than in our old LG. Just water in the door and ice maker in freezer w a scoop. We have a deep freezer in the basement for additional frozen storage https://www.ajmadison.com/cgi-bin/ajmadison/RF203QDUVX1.html?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cse&utm_term=RF203QDUVX1&gclid=Cj0KCQjw2MWVBhCQARIsAIjbwoOta9_fqs83uBj74hakyOc5I8jIlJOQ_ggWk_Py2WYLbiHF8-1cvBMaAlU5EALw_wcB...See Moredebrak2008
