Anyone get a FD WITHOUT ice/water in the door?

I'm looking at FD refrigerators but am trying to decide whether to get ice/water in the door or not. Our current SxS has them but the ice dispenser stopped working long ago. The water still works fine but since I have hard water, it gets all crusty and nasty. I"m not really worried about the water disp. because we can get an under=the=sink filter. I am wondering if I will get tired of reaching down in the bottom freezer for ice though. Any thoughts? Any brands you love/hate? Thanks!

I have a CDFD GE for a year and a half. Although it came with an icemaker, we never hooked it up because a) we have no water line and b) I'd heard that they tended to be troublemakers. I'm happy without it, & I love the Frig!

I have LG CDFD with an icemaker in the freezer. Same situation as leel - no water line and all repairs seem be for icemakers, so I have couple of ice trays. Can't say it bothers me to reach into the freezer to get ice for my rum & coke ;)

My sis has JA CDFD with an icemaker in freezer and water inside the fridge on the side. She likes this setup but the filter for the water has to be constantly changed.

Because I have a bad back and like both cold AND frozen items at eye level. So you are not going to use the bottom two thirds of the fridge? Having the most commonly used frozen items on top vs a bottom freezer can't make that big of a difference. I too have a bad back. And a $3800 tempur-pedic to help. Maybe a raised fridge and a seperate raised freezer would be better? And "French door is much more beautiful" is debatable, not sure what is MUCH more beautiful about a cutting the front into three pieces instead of two. It is not debatable if you have good taste. Beauty can not be really be explained satisfactorily. IF you can't see it I can not explain it you.

As you can see, I've been way behind in my responses! Thanks so much everyone for taking the time to help w/ this matter! My contractor says the Wirsbo (or whatever it's called now - hopefully it's not an old stash - ha) is good and he swears doesn't change the taste of the water. Other friends have said that's what most plumbers use now, yada yada. I haven't used the water out of the fridge yet (taken the time to read the fridge's manual and figure out how to get the water and ice and filter going properly, filling up a few gallons of water to flush it out, etc.) but the moment I catch up, I will. Meanwhile, I'm going to cross my fingers and hope this will be good enough. If it's not, well, I'll deal w/ that at the time. If the water tastes funny I'll give that *some* time but I'm not willing to waste several weeks on funny-tasting water so hopefully all will be well. creek side - thanks for sharing your experience w/ Pex. Does it matter that it's not just the fridge line but also w/ the new sink faucet? Hopefully not. He ran it along the unfinished basement ceiling and then it comes up underneath the sink cabinet where he put a shutoff valve. There's no risk of UV light cause even in the basement - as far as I recall - there are only North windows that are darkened from previous owner's covering them w/ some funky old plastic. If we ever finish the basement I may consider covering up better. Assuming the stuff makes it that long. I agree that he was out of line and that at least my contractor should have asked me whether I had a preference. Oh well - I made my feelings known to my contractor without being unnecessarily confrontational. It's amazing how much you learn your first-time doing remodeling! :-o antss - Thanks for the positive feedback about Pex as well as putting the shutoff under the sink. Well, I wasn't THAT clear w/ my contractor - haha - but I surely let him know how I felt about the plumber not discussing it w/ me which hopefully by default was made clear that my CONTRACTOR should have discussed it w/ me. I sense he won't make that mistake again since he appears pretty intelligent and since something similar has happened w/ the electrician once before! There are lots more little decisions to be made and I've been pretty clear w/ him since the Pex issue that in the future I'd like to know whenever one is about to be made. Re. the electrician, one of them decided where my backsplash outlets would go without discussing w/ me first. The electrician originally put in two sets of outlets on either side of the sink (4 in each) and I had him redo it and put in 2 sets on each side of the sink - one closer to the sink and one toward the end of the counter, w/ 2 + 2 instead of 4. I let my contractor know, then, that I found it odd that the electrician hadn't asked me how I wanted the setup to be. *Hopefully* this won't happen anymore (ugh) and hopefully I won't be charged for his having to undo that work. It makes me feel so petty and controlling to complain, even though I know in the end I have every right. aprince - awww, cute name. ;) Yes, I keep reading that about copper. It seems people are 50/50 on the matter, really. Well, take for instance creek side's comment below yours! davidro1 - thanks for the clarification re. Uponor vs. cheap plastic, as well as the importance of making sure it's very secure at the joint! weedmeister - haha thanks for aiding in my confidence! :) antss - yeah, "all can be fine if used properly and appropriately" makes perfect sense. AS LONG AS the water tastes good! creek side - well hopefully (all I can really do is hope at this point) the stuff hasn't been exposed to the sun or you know...bright lights. Here in the NW I doubt the plumber or anyone would have stored it outside, but who knows. davidro1 - you just reminded me that I meant to check the back of the fridge to see if he gave some extra length back there of the Pex. amcook - I seem to recall he used a T joint but I'd better double-check. We have the 72" Kitchenaid FD CD fridge. We love it. I have the internal water dispenser; the ice maker is in the freezer drawer. I have no issues filling a water bottle, or anything else. Just have to position it correctly.

Go to this website: http://www.us-appliance.com/ They have detailed info on all the major refrigerators. You can even download owner's manuals in some cases. You should be able to find what you're looking for. BTW, you don't have to buy from this company if you don't want to. I have never bought from them, so I cannot say how reliable they are. But their prices seem very good. After you have found the fridge you want, go to your local appliance dealer and tell him. If you says he can't get it for you, contact the manufacturer's customer service by 800 #, and ask them for a dealer near you that carries it. If that doesn't work, then your only choice is to buy on the Internet from a retail merchant such as this one. They should not charge for delivery or sales tax. Make sure it's "white glove" delivery, or else they'll just leave the appliance in front of your house and you'll have to arrange separately to get it in place. I'm sure you can get what you're looking for. Happy hunting.

I have the Samsung FD with ice in the freezer and water inside the refrig.

I do not miss them in the door. I think by having to get the ice inside the freezer it helps me keep tabs on the ice and it stays fresher because I actually clean the ice bucket. Also, my Samsung has a button that allows you to turn off the icemaker and we use that to keep the ice fresh.

Overall, I am very happy with the streamlined exterior. I would not go back to ice/water in the door. Just my 2 cents!

I bought the brand new maytag FD with bottom freezer, it has the ice maker in the bottom drawer and I love it. We had a SXS with ice and water in the door, never used the water as we have an RO system at the sink. So I figured for the extra $ we could bend down and get ice out of the freezer drawer. I think its easy, and don't really notice it taking any extra effort. Love the refrigerator so far, had it for a couple months.

Last week the same Samsung FD that Preston has was delivered to my home. Beautiful! Initially, we selected a different FD, but couldn't get delivery. This was our second choice, and we do enjoy water inside the door. It is a joy and is much quieter than our old Kitchenaid.

I will use the icemaker but just don't know if I want the dispenser. Thanks for the input! I know I wouldn't miss cleaning the dispensers!

Another Samsung FD here with no water dispenser. Happy not to have to worry about another gizmo that might break down, kids letting the water drip on the floor so that I am having to clean up water marks. Since the ice bucket is on the top drawer of the freezer bending over to get the ice isn't that big a deal and I'm on the tall side.

I got the GE Profile with ice maker in the lower drawer (freezer). No water this time. We have soft water but it taste bad and we drink bottle water but the ice comes out pretty good with the internal filter. I had the ice/water dispense on my previous fridge and only used the ice.

I have the JennAir with ice maker in the freezer, and water inside the fridge. I like the ice maker a lot, have never really used the water.

We have had a Maytag MFF2558KES unit for about 18 months and it has worked flawlessly for us. We have little kids and felt that the in-door dispensors would be too much of a temptation. Plus, neither my wife nor I have ever had a fridge with the dispensers and didn't feel we would ever use them. Also, we have read terrible things about the reliability of those features. Although it has an automatic ice making device in the freezer, we don't use that either. Overall, we have been extremely happy with our unit.

A friend of ours has the same unit with the in-door dispensers. She's had them repaired 4 times since she bought her unit. What is really messed up is that when the dispensers have failed on her unit, the entire fridge has stopped working every time. Maytag just writes her a $200 check for new groceries. Seems like a pretty inefficient way to do business.

We've had a couple of side-by-sides (Amana) with ice and water thru the door and they always need to be serviced within a few years of purchase. After repairing the ice makers sveral times, we gave up.... purchase bags of ice and dump them into the ice maker and use it as a dispenser only. It's nice to have an ice dispenser, the water lines have often clogged, however, so no water dispenser has lasted very long.
We're now shopping for a cabinet depth fridge and are considering a smooth look.... no through-the-door ANYTHING... simply an ice maker inside the freezer. I'm hoping it will last longer.

I have the Jenn-Air with the ice in the freezer and the water inside and I love it. The water is much colder than the water in the door of my GE Profile that was replaced. Getting the ice out of the freezer is also much easier and cleaner that getting it out of the door. Before with the GE Profile as much ice ended up on the floor as did in the glass and many of my glasses were cracked by ice falling in them too hard.

Anyone get a FD WITHOUT ice/water in the door?
