Good morning Kathleen,

My dear friend, I am sure it was an innocent oversight & you didn't intend to overlook that it's your turn to pull the plug on the Pond!

This is our 3rd day of coastal flood warnings/advisories & we are weary. This storm has developed a real fondness for us and, like an unwelcome visitor, is staying past its welcome. I am tired of yelling over the wind to speak with DH and he is only in the other room. I am also tired of standing vigil all night watching the water edge closer and closer. Somebody has to pull the plug and, in all fairness, I did it last storm so it's your turn!

During yesterday's lull in the action we drove from Stonington Point to Groton Long Point and, three hours after high tide, it was obvious the Pond is not draining and the tub would overflow yet again. Three footers were crashing over the seawall at GLP and even the seagulls looked soaked to their little bones and dismayed.

To my CF friends at coastal points south of me...please come immediately and reclaim your water. We have too much and part of it is rightfuly yours. These swells were generated from the Delmarva and points south. We can tell they belong to you because they contain dolphins. So, you can't deny ownership.

As DH and I were standing at the kitchen window overlooking our neighbor's back yard on Saturday night, we were discussing how the water was just creeping, creeping, ever closer as each hour passed. Then, BOOM, our neighbor's beautiful willow simply uprooted itself & crashed to the ground rattling our windows and causing me to make an urgent pit stop.

This morning, the tub is still overflowing and we have yet another coastal flood advisory due to this persistent tidal piling. The swells (again, YOUR swells, there's no denying that the fetch has come from your way my southern friends) are continually pushing water into the Sound and not allowing the Pond to drain. This is unfair. Again, I repeat, we have not slept in 3 days and are tired.

Kathleen, we would greatly appreciate your diving down to pull the plug well before our evening high tide.

And will somebody also turn off the upstairs faucet, please. We do not require any further water from above either. We have had approximately 10" of rain from these past two storms. My daffodils do not need additional irrigation.

Hi Sharon, being the rbb, I emailed Linda and sent her a link to this thread in case she doesn't stop by here often. Your email woes sound bad. I've just always used Hotmail and never used any of the ISP offered email addys over the years. If I had done that, I would have had to have changed my addy several times as I have had numerous ISPs over the years before finally getting Broadband wireless available here in the boondocks. Might it be a good time to ditch Bellsouth and go with Hotmail maybe, for your GW correspondence? Hope they get you fixed up quick Sue

If you come outside onto my front porch we will lay in the Swingbed and take our Folgers I.V. I put a light cover over me if the cool winds are blowing from OK. Yes Southerners do SPRAWL out on their front porches, LOL and snorting!!!!. I use a mosquito net in the summer. This swing holds a regular twin sized mattress. Hubs did not build it. It holds 2 adults, 2 dogs and whole bunch of grandbabies that I dont have yet. I took the doggies to the pond in our neighborhood. Windy and high 60's but supposed to chill down this week some. My hair ended up wrapped around my face and my lips pruned up. Check out the pier. That is where the wise-as_ kids who took my bike for a spin one night dumped it. You should have seen me jump in my car in my pajamas going to hunt them down and retreive my bike. (See why Hubs wont let me have a gun????) I was running to the pier, flannel and terry cloth flying in the wind. There was plenty of unintelligible fussing and stomping around in my furry house shoes. They had removed the front basket that my poodle dog rides in (I'm guessing they were fishing and needed a place to put their fish.). Yes, I am one of those ladies who ride around with a dog in the front and a dog in the back. Now you know why they took the basket and left the "Maw Maw" bike. Watched the Sun sparkle on the water. Went down to the fishing lake. Came back to the empty nest to find an ORB on my roof. Help!!!!! Kudzu. What kind is that???? Enjoyed adopted poodle, Bailey Jo hiding behind the pansys!! Shhhh-hhh-hhh, he doesn't know he is adopted. He thinks he came from planet VISA like his little brother did. I hope you enjoyed our little walk. In August it will be too hot 'for me' to do this at this time of day. You might save some snow in your freezer to send to me then. Thinking about my favorite snow bears!!!!!! Susie/DFW TEXAS

Old Rose Forum Friend: New to SoCal Beach City. Help me choose!

Hi Beth - I'm new to this forum, but not new to coastal Southern Cal rose growing, so I'll chime in too. I'm in San Juan Capistrano on the South end of Orange County and about 2.5 miles from the beach in a coastal canyon. So I know all about roses in the marine layer fog. Mildew, not black spot, is the bane of our existence here. The only blackspot I've ever seen in my garden was on florist roses. But I do spray. And the three most fragrant ones on your list -- Double Delight, McCartney Rose and Fragrant Cloud -- will mildew even with religious spraying. But, the fragrance is worth it and I grow all three. No one has told you about the rose societies here yet. There are several. I go all the way south to the California Coastal Rose Society in Carlsbad. That's probably too far for you. There are two other OC rose societies -- the Orange County Rose Society which meets very near to Huntington Beach in Westminster -- they focus on exhibitions and hold their show the last weekend of October every year at Rogers Gardens. There's also another one that focuses mostly on gardening, garden tours and garden parties -- no exhibiting -- which is the Saddleback Rose Society -- that one's a bit inland for both of us. Wholly different climate those folks have. You can get to either one by googling the names, or I've put a link in here for the OCRS. On the rest of your list, I've grown most of them, and they do just fine. But as a general rule, in coastal cool areas like ours, fewer petals is better. Many roses just won't open like they do in hot climes, and sometimes you just die waiting for a leeeetle bit of heat to get them open, which never comes. So, plan to have some that open without heat. As for colors, try these -- Pink -- Our Lady Of Guadalupe is by far the best pink floribunda. But also check out The Imposter and Lovestruck, both of which do well for me. For Hybrid Teas, I like Memorial Day. Purple -- Intrigue is okay, but try Purple Tiger -- it's better and it's striped. It does really well on the coast. For a Hybrid Tea, I like Neptune and one that Armstrongs carries called Della Reese that is a darker purple hybrid tea with occasional exhibition form. Orange -- About Face Red -- I'm still looking for a good one. Yellow -- Julia Child or Midas Touch. Or even Peace, which gets enormous blooms on the coast. Multi -- get some stripes -- City of Carlsbad if you can find it or Cabana if you can't. Have fun. I seem to move every few years just BECAUSE I get to replenish my garden. Enjoy it. CHUY415...pretty sure it is only at this green thumb in Ventura. He is a friend of the head nursery guy here and a great human being with a lovely and gracious wife. He has about 60 huge trees in the ground by FARIA up the coast a few minutes that he sells great cuttings from. He originally brought all these from Hawaii when they were itty-bitty and put them in the ground at a friends ranch. Locked and guarded.. :-) Sago Lover..I have only a few in the ground as we are on a very small lot and my husband will not let me start to put them all over the upper decks and roof tops......so, lots are in pots and I am putting lots on wheels. .. not all are of blooming size yet but each year I get more and more that are blooming. I think each year I will start to thin the herd and give some of the common or unnamed/non smelly ones to neighbors. Are you going to the S.D. sale? mahalo, roxanne

Sorry, Tricia, I know you have more than enough...
I am worrying about all those people up north of me....and you know who you are...canoe Linda for one. They are breathing their hot breath and holding their doors open and melting all that snow waaaaay too fast and it's all running down stream!
Now all you uop north....get out your snow shovels and fill your freezers with what's left of that snow....we don't need any more of that melted stuff just now.

We got our butts kicked Sat nite...my neighboorhood has trees down power lines and loss of power in certain area UGHH!!! What a weekend!

We have too much wet & wind! Too much snow, too much rain, to much wind.....As the Bay is pushing its way North, docks are under water again. Yards are flooded, the ground is soaked. We were spared the worst of this storm, but those in NY,NJ,CT - I've been watching and hoping you all are okay.
It has been a rough winter for boats here. I've watched lifts break & powerboats full of snow plunge into the icey river, a 40' beautiful sailboat sink, covers, sails ripped to shreds.....this is all from my window.

When they do release the water from the the North, we will get flooded again....along with all the carp and trash that people carelessly throw onto the banks and into the water.
Mattresses, logs, oil drums, all kinds of dangerous debris.
We all need clear skies, sun would be really nice, calm days & starry quiet nights.

Tricia, Your post would be funny to me, if I didn't feel your exasperation :). Coastal flooding is not funny, but your post is written when the humor we feel living on the water.:-)

Us too. My kids school is likely going to be closed another day or two. People are lined up at gas stations getting gas for generators, there are still HUGE trees down blocking major roads, and plumbing company trucks are in every other driveway.

My kids are thrilled to be off from school, but at this rate they're going to be in school until July 4th.

Well, we are battered, bruised, flooded, and missing a few shingles but we are not broken! We shall overcome...

Whew, this was a tough one. Just didn't want to end. Today, our cove still has white caps; but the water has retreated (mostly). It has left behind washed out roads, not just downed trees but missing trees...just gone out to sea, battered landscaping, paint stripped from our houses from a saltwater powerwash, flooded basements galore (we don't have a basement), and hundreds of tired utility workers.

DH has been out working on clean-up since daybreak. The sun is shining & we're got a comparatively light breeze @ 15 mph. The town's emergency management team has been out looking at our street discussing whether it can be patched or will required regrading and a total redo.

The biggest concern though is we have lost a significant piece of land from our cove to erosion. It's estuary marsh land so very difficult, if not impossible, to repair. It means that the next storm will have an easier time pushing inland. The water's only about 30' from the road now for around a 75' stretch and, basically, at equal elevation. Not much safety net. We lost about 10-15'.

It's so tranquil today it's hard to believe the heavy weather of the past 3 days. We've even got a mated pair of swans back on our cove. I hope they didn't have a nest that was washed away. Our osprey's haven't yet returned to their nests to lay this year's eggs. A couple weeks later and this storm would have wiped them out.

magothyrivergirl, yes, I know what you are talking about with the boats taking a hit this winter. We've got damage everywhere...shrink wrapping torn to shreds, damaged docks, lifts toppled, even seawall breaches. Spring commissioning this year will be more repair work than getting fun new biminis or a new BBQ to hang off the stern.

Hope everybody else made it through OK. I know there are thousands here in New England that have serious damage and will be months recovering. We consider ourselves Blessed that the house is still sitting on the same site it was a week ago. Actually, I feel lucky we even have a site left.

Our osprey returned last Thursday during the storm! I thought they would be late, but I guess they didn't get the bad weather memo. I have a marker in front of my house that the CG didn't clean out the nest over the winter. The last time this happened a few years ago, they clean it out after the eggs were laid. I was furious, and it took many phone calls to get to the right person to complain. Unless it is a navigational hazard (light out) they aren't suppose to disturb the nest.
I am sorry about your loss of marsh land - this area lost alot during Isabel in 2003 - you never recover from that. And you are right, it is your only defense.
I am hoping you are all safe and I am thinking of you.

I know I heard from Dishesdone and she's been without power since Sunday, they got one heck of a storm. she says they have downed trees and downed power lines everywhere.

Here there have only been flood advisories for the last couple of weeks, the rivers are over their banks nearly everywhere, but they usually are with the spring runoff anyway, plus it's been raining like crazy most days.

Tricia, I am just seeing this! We had a lot of flooding too..Down the block the pond washed right across to the Bay..lots of flooded basements and people without power. We were lucky...we kept our power..lost cable but still had elect.
I hope by now things are better there. It has been beautiful for several days..I hope the other shoe doesn't drop!
