Onyx Collection - Gloss FInish... how does it hold up long term?

I am looking to replace my tub with a shower. So I am exploring different materials including the OnyxCollection for the pan and walls. If you have the Gloss finish, can you tell me how it is holding up over time? Is it as easy care as you hoped and still shiny?

I have 2 onyx bathrooms. One is 2 years old and the other is 1 week old.

The two year old one has a shower with glossy onyx walls (white) and a glossy vanity top (kind of an olive-y green). Everything is in excellent shape. I have found that the best way to clean them is with Scrubbing Bubbles and one of those nylon net shower scrubbie things. A friend who also has onyx prefers to use baby wipes with a bit of alcohol in them.

Very, very easy to keep clean. No issues with loss of glossiness. Yet.

Obviously, I loved onyx bathroom #1 so well that I remodeled bathroom #2 with onyx as well. :)

The gloss finish on Onyx Collection products is a very high grade polyester gel coat. The gel coat is applied to the molds and then the product is cast in afterwords creating a bond that will last forever (also stated in their guarantee).

As for the matte finish. It has more of a dull or corian finish that is essentially the same process except the finish is sanded off (product is still sealed). The matte finish (a little more expensive with less color options) will show less water spots but as stated before the maintenance and cleaning of this product (both gloss and matte) is exceptionally easy!

At the 10 year mark it's possible that brushed nickel will be horribly dated like brass (I don't mind dated finishes but some folks sure do). Chrome really is durable. Unbeatably so. Look at old Buicks! I do have some 80 year old nickel faucets (hot and cold) that look a bit weathered but the nickel is still good. Of course, it started off shiny and is probably not what they are currently using for "nickel". I think for nickel, you need to compare specific manufacturers--the colors of the finish vary and the composition must as well. I had brushed nickel hardware (door handles and cabinet pulls) installed my the PO in my last house and after less than 5 years, the more used ones were worn smooth. I didn't mind, but you could sure see which cabinet had the good towels and which one had the cleaning supplies (insert blushing face here). For durability (and for not being in fashion enough to go out of fashion), I think chrome is the way to go unless you dislike it.

If you've had cork floors for a while, how are they holding up?

I love cork floors. We had 1 for 18 years that covered entry way, powder room, kitchen and dining area. It wore well, scratches from our dog were barely noticeable. Ours was a lighter color and hid the dirt well. We live in WI with lots of snow, slush, and mud on shoes which didn't hurt the floors. Most times when something glass was dropped on the floor, it didn't break. The floor was warm to bare feet. I didn't get any care instructions and basically used a lot of water to clean it which caused some slight curling (not noticeable, could feel with bare feet if you were focusing on that) at the seams. Can you tell that I loved that floor? This cork floor was high quality,floating (non-glue) type that was more expensive than wood or tile at the time. One of my friends lives in a high end, penthouse condo with cement floors and she put in glue down cork. The glue down cork became uneven in places which they attributed to temperature changes in the concrete. She wishes she had gotten the floating cork. We drastically changed our layout and color scheme when remodeling and the floor needed to be changed. It was easy to remove the floor. I would have gotten another cork floor but the interior decorator said none of the color options were right for the cabinet color. In hindsight, I should have fired the decorator and gotten cork. I also like the new tile floor.

Re-staining Deck with long term solution

Cassma Thanks for the response. Evidently I didn't make it clear what I was looking for or maybe what I would like does not exist. Anyway...I have done further research and these are my conclusions: 1. Nothing is going to last more than a couple of years at the most. When I am unable to do it myself, I will have to hire someone. 2. I don't really like the look of solid stain so will go with Cabots semi transparent oil based stain. 3. I found a new to me tool that will enable me to apply the stain without having to be on my hands and knees brushing it on. It is by Wagner and looks kinda like a swiffer mop with a tank to hold solution. It has a felt like pad and a small brush to get between the boards. You stand up and apply like mopping. Wonder if anyone has used it before? As you say, I will powerwash and get it as clean as possible before applying the new stain. I also know that you need several days of clear weather before you start this project. The deck has to dry before the stain can be applied and then the stain has to dry thoroughly before it rains!!! Outside temperature should ideally be in the 70's with no freezing or heavy dew. Deck staining IS an art if you want it to last and look good. Again...hope this helps you with your project. Murphy

"Had we received a back-up offer that we found more attractive we could have given the original buyers an option to remove their contingencies or taken the back up offer." Huh? I don't think so. Once you accept an offer that contains contingencies, such as inspection, financing, selling the current house, the seller has to honor them as long as the time period that was agreed on has not been exceeded. You can't give "the buyers an option to remove their contingencies or tak[e] the backup offer." I have seen you have made several posts with positive reviews of the OnyxCollection shower/bathtub surrounds. Do you still have the home that you placed them in? Have you noticed any shifting or movement in the panels? Are you still happy with them? Are they compatible with other brands of tubs such as Kohler? Thank you!

I sold the Onyx collection shower walls with a shower pan and vanity tops when I worked for Lowe’s. Our contractor had no issues installing it and the customers were happy with the product. It provided a good option for customers not wanting a tiled shower.
