Are you happy with your master bathroom tile decisions?

We are gutting our 1980's master bathroom and will be using gray woodwork for the vanity area. The bathroom is 12' X 16'. If you were able to change your tile and/or grout are there any shoulda, coulda, or woulda suggestions or do you love your choices? I would love to see pictures too if you are willing to share them.

Currently we have faux white marble with beige veining and white grout. I must say the white grout comes in as the second biggest mistake of my life. (Okay, #1 was marrying my 1st husband :)! Hubby #2 is fantastic and we've been married 29 years!!!!

Hi soonermom! We start our 1988 master bath remodel next week. We built the house and chose (at the time) a lovely dark blue tile on the counter top and the surround on the the monster sized whirlpool. Our bath is big but yours is huge! I can't wait to get rid of the blue tile (grout bad - never again) We too have white grout. As to woulda, shoulda, coulda, - I'm sticking with a more neutral pallet this time and the pics on this site have inspired me!! Not much help with your decisions as we are just starting -but lots of encouragement and sympathy. Will follow your reno!

Honestly, I don't think you, us, or anyone can make that call without putting the actual materials together and looking at them. In general, I certainly don't think that classy white tile will look "cheap" with a taupe-y room. If it's nice tile. But believe me, EVERY white tile, subway, square, whichever, looks different in real life. I've now had to choose subways for two kitchens and white field tile for two bathrooms, and the difference in appearance between them is amazing. In the last bathroom, I was on a super tight budget and tiling all the walls, so I had to choose a cheap tile. The two cheapest (Lowes and HD's subways and 4x4s, by American Olean and, I think, Daltile, but their low-end, big-box-only lines) are very uniform and have glazes that lack any sort of depth or lustre. I just couldn't do it. Interestingly, just a few cents more per tile buys the American Olean field tile with a different surface texture (ever so slightly wavy, which creates a bit of sparkle in the room) and slightly different colored glaze. The "richness" in the look between these 3 tiles, all of which were the same size, shape, and bright white... was incredible. All that is just to illustrate the point that you really gotta see it in person :) That particular bathroom, by the way, has grey-beige walls and a beige, limestone-look tile on the floor. White fixtures, and white tile. I think it looks quite elegant ;) If you want to add a masculine touch, and you want to use the dark medicine cabinet, would you consider doing white tile with a black (or dark brown- whatever matches the cab) accent? You could even run the tile around the walls of the room as wainscotting. Like this, sort of? Or some other way to bring that dark accent in... otherwise I think I would go with the white medicine cabinet... I also agree with you on preferring recessed medicine cabinets!

olychick, thank you for taking a look. :) I'm relieved to hear you think a white shower pan is best. I am heading out now to find porcelain marble look tiles for the shower walls to pick up the gray as you suggested. I want a shiny finish to the walls. Tell me if you think that's a misstep. I am avoiding marble as I have a marble topped vanity now that is pock marked with etchings. As far as seeing myself in the vanity, yes, I think I will be able to do so. I was planning on a black framed mirror spanning the vanity. My current vanity is 32 1/4" high (as will be the new vanity) and when seated on my vanity stool my reflection is seen up to my chest. The only issue currently is that my knees are pressed against drawers. I failed to mention that I was thinking of using absolute black granite for the vanity top for two reasons: one being cost and the other being to avoid etching. Will doing so deviate too much from my inspiration? what do you do with pink tile in the master bathroom?

Tile on my (tiny iPhone) screen looks gold/grey. Is there another view that brings out the pink? The granite top looks very 80s and combined with 80s panelled cabinet doors seem at odds with the tiles which have a more 20s/30s vibe. Can you change door fronts to something flat and simple, and change bench top to better match the new wall colour and a simpler light. Best of luck.

We did botticino marble with mushroom grout. It is all really really neutral and calming. I posted some pics in June. The tile looks sort of pinkish in the pics but it is actually beige--not a hint of pink in it. We are very happy with it.

We did 2 full bathroom guts this year. Best decision was using high quality porcelain tiles for floor and shower areas. They look great, are almost impossible to damage and require no upkeep. In one of the baths we used white grout on the shower walls. I may end up being sorry about that, but the bathroom is not a heavily used one, so hopefully it will wear OK.

Another decision that made me happy was going with some color instead of doing totally neutral baths. One of our baths has sea green 12x12's on the floor, and to me it looks a little retro and a little new at the same time. In the other I did an accent wall of crackle green ceramics. I'm not one who subscribes to the "add a pop of color with your paint and towels" philosophy, and I went with what I was drawn to.

I used 24x24 white tiles in the room with 0 grout line and love it. "less grout" no nooks and crannies to clean! Neutral timeless design love it. I will post photo's one day!
