Sound recorder

I am having a problem with trying to use a microphone with my computer. It is not muted. When I go to "Start-Programs-Accessories-Entertainment", Entertainment says , "empty". I have a Unimodem half-duplex audio device. Is that the sound card? Do I need Office to have a sound recorder? I have XP Home edition. This is a struggle. What do I need to do to use a microphone with this computer? Thanks for your assistance.

In your run line, type in
SndRec32
and see what happens.

Quick yahoo search found something that said;
The unimodem half duplex audio device is not a sound card driver per se, it is software used to enable Telephone Answering Device (TAD) functions of modems that have the capability to be an answering machine as well as a modem.

Thank you Mikie . I got the sound recorder to come up but there is no sound from the microphone. How do you find the info for the sound card? I might need a new driver or full-duplex sound card. I'm wanting to use the Windows Live Messenger with sound and video it looks as though it'll never work.

Thank you, Everyone, for your help.:) I went into the C drive last night and found a couple Audacity files, so deleted them, then downloaded an older version of the program, shut down for the night, then installed it this morning, and it seems to be working, hip hip hooray! There's a faint background whistle--probably caused by our el cheapo desktop speakers--but maybe we can edit that out with the program. Now, if I can figure out how to include LAME so as to save as MP3s, we'll have it made. I downloaded the zipfile and have it on desktop, but when Audacity asks where the file is saved, it's not showing up. No biggie, we can live without that, if we have to.:) Thanks again, y'all. You've made my day!:) And, Raven, I'm going to check out your suggested program right now. Thank you.:)

I can't help the OP, but just wanted to say that video Deeageaux posted was unbelievable! I had read previously on this forum that Northlands have a reputation for being noisy. Makes me that much happier with my recent purchase of a humble Samsung (FD, no water in the door), which is so quiet. I cannot believe I was quibbling cause I can hear the ice drop from the ice maker. If the OP has the budget for the Northland, perhaps s/he should look instead at the Liebherr, Thermador or Subzero models.

We had our wedding videod. They put a wireless mic on me, which picked up my wife's voice adn that of the officiant. That was just for the ceremony. Although money's always an issue, I would consider having a professional outfit do the wedding video. It was suprisingly affordable compared to the photos, and they did a very good job. As for a camera (and I'm a mac guy), I would get a camera that records on MiniDV tapes. You will never worry about exceeding capacity and the tapes are a great backup so that you don't take up your entire hard drive with movie bits.

That was one of the truly terrific things about this show - the use of a live band and live musicians. I was in awe of their abilities. I didn't watch the show last season because of the bottom-of-the-barrel dancers and this is another reason for not watching it any more.

Might look in 'Device Manager' for the sound card. Double click it and it should offer 'Trouble shoot' and also 'Update Driver'

.. quickest way for me to access device manager is right click my computer on the desktop and choose manage.
