Please tell me about your Shower Niche
Comments (8)In our guest bathroom we have a corner basket. It holds a lot - a heavy shampoo bottle, a heavy conditioner bottle, shaving cream, face moisturizer, etc - and no signs of sagginess. It's screwed in with screws which are very strong. In our master bathroom, we have two niches. Left side is DH's...right side is mine...which is handy if you use different products than your partner. They sit right under the shower head which I would highly recommend. You would think that they would get wet in this area but they don't - because the stream of water from the rainshower is further forward. We don't have any problems of water build up in the niches. They are framed with Calacatta marble pieces, and the backs are a Calacatta mosaic:...See MoreCan you show me your shower niche?
Comments (10)Thanks, everyone! ogoopogo - One of the tile places actually showed me the schluter strips. The only picture I could find online is this one. I'm not crazy about the silver, but I thought it might look better with a matching color. What color is yours? Pipdog - So, is the cut edge of the inside of the niche covered by the front tile? I'm looking at a brick mosaic similar to the size of your kitchen backsplash, so I'm trying to figure out if that will work as well. It's a frosted glass, so it might look better than tile except I'm not sure about the smaller tiles. Catmom & dedtired - Does yours have bullnose?...See MoreLike it? Comments (5)Hi Monica, Thanks for your feedback. Right, recirc hot water results in instant hot water. There are two ways to do it: (1) add a crossover device to the furthest fixture or (2) run a return line from the furthest device back to a pump at the water heater. I had the walls open, so I did #2 (pump: Grundfos). Though it saves on water, the cost of equipment and installation and additional energy usage makes the main benefit convenience rather than cost savings. I would not tile without a laser -- they are not expensive and I like perfection. I use the Craftsman 2-beam, self-leveling laser level, $85 at Sears. For lasering walls, I clamp the laser base to a ZipWall pole and move the laser up and down the pole, as needed -- a good enough system for occasional use. For large format tile, be sure your surface is absolutely f-l-a-t. Good luck with your project!...See MoreMy Alcove Tub Shower-Niches, Corner Shelves and Baskets-What To Do?
Comments (11)warning - old post that i have a question about - @palimpsest - I want to add a long shelf in my alcove tub/shower combo vs. having a niche installed. Sounds like exactly what you did in your bathrooms. Would you mind posting some photos + a brief explanation of how it was installed? My contractor and I have discussed a couple ideas, but I’m still looking for the best way to do this. Thanks!...See MoreGina_W
