We go through a lot of phones with the kids. For a while the kids both had Go phones into which they inserted their sim cards because they lost, broke, washed the good phones. The phones cost between 16 and 30 bucks. (They are more careful now.) We have ATT hence the Go phones. Does Verizon have something similar?

I always buy insurance but even with insurance the deductible is still 50/phone. So the price of 42 to fix it is less than the deductible for me. It might be worth it to simply fix it.

I feel your pain. I washed a one month old Blackberry summer before last. No insurance and they wanted 400.00 for another one after I paid 250.00 for the one that went into the drink. Ouch. I waited and got a Samsung Gravity with a full keyboard which I like a lot better. But 42.00 sounds like a deal to fix it if that is all it ends up costing.

My kids break/damage cellys all the time...my kids just ask their friends if they have an old phone they can use.
I just recently bought a new celly but I have the old one safely tucked away until someone drops/ throws/ launches/ submurges ect...you get the picture LOL!!

By the way, my new phone is a nokia with an FM radio....LOVE IT!!!

I've been with Verizon for over 12 years, and I never fail to remind customer service of that fact. I think the call-center people are better able to help you than the stores. Did you get either the insurance or the "New every two years" plans?
You might check on your local Freecycle or Craigslist to see if someone is giving away the same phone, and then you could just switch the parts.

Thanks as always everyone for ideas. I did try Craigslist, but those phones average $150 to buy. But it was worth a shot. I also found out that the repair is through LG, not Verizon and the price to repair could be as low as 42 or as high as $95. Further research suggests the price of the screen alone is $50, so the $42 cost is probably not what I'll be charged. My dd has the option of paying for the repairs, or continuing to use the phone in its limited, but useable state. Not sure if verizon has go phones. That might be the option if something else goes awry.
Lesson learned, we'll get insurance the next time around.
Oh, and Eileen, I am not sure I understand your second post. Can you elaborate for me?

I would never recommend the insurance if your company uses Asurion as their provider. When I got my T-mobile MDA a few years ago I needed to use the insurance. They a took 150 dollar deposit from me! I had been paying the montly fee (five dollars a month I think) for almost two years. I could have purchased a brand new device for all that money! The replacement phone was a refurb that had more problems than the original. Plus, they demanded that I send them my old device or they would charge me a 400 "restocking fee". I asked what if I had lost my phone.... they said that I wouldn't have to send it if I lost it, but because it was broken I HAD to send it in.

When I upgraded to the Wing, the lady to "sold" me my phone screamed, "You don't want the shurance, do you?" as I was opening the door to leave after the sale! I don't remember if I even responded... if I did, she wouldn't have enjoyed the response.

I will be surprised if they do anything but try to sell you a new phone. But, I wish you luck! It's so frustrating to break an electronic!
