Vista and Office

Well, I need a new pc. Ireally wanted another XP but that does not seem in the cards so I guess I'll need to learn vista.

Questions:

1) I only have dial up and I am concerned I am going to need to download numerous patches and / or files for any old software I have...scanner software, printers, photo etc. Am I right?

2) Will my version of OFFICE work on the Vista platform. I have heard it will not, or it must be regristered over the net and junk...can I just install it?

3) Any ideas where I could get an XP system!

I'm in the same boat as you. Dell has a few models which they sell with XP. I think they are Dimensions E series. It's hidden on their web page. I found out by calling them. I'm hoping Office 2003 works on Vista because I have so many documents on it on my other machines.
I think I am going to buy another XP machine. I need my computers to work together and I think Vista will present a problem in a network.

Found this at another forum. Thought I'd share. I updated/upgraded five machines from XP and Vista to Windows 7. I did the "clean" install on each. I use Office 2007 and the upgrades seemed to keep most all of my stuff. I have not found anything missing. Just for info, I backed up those directories/folders/files first, just in case. So far the the only thing that has failed to work for me (my wife actually) is an old Windows 98/XP Typing instruction program. I think that is because I did the upgrades on both desktops to 64bit, up from 32bit. Also just for info, just a couple of weeks ago I downloaded and installed the beta for Office 2010. It seems to be going very well also. Wonder if he used the OEM or the Retail version??? Think I'll ask! Thanks folks! In no hurry here, so keep the info coming. bbbluz

I would try going to their respective websites and see if there is info there about using them with Vista it may lead you to new drivers or instructions you might need with Vista. MS Office '97-'03 should install just fine on Vista. My Office 2000 version did. So, maybe if you have an old version of office, you could install that, then use the XP upgrade Office disk. If PhotoShop 6 will install and is compatible with Vista, then you could install it and use the PhotoShop CS upgrade disk. I guess you'll just have to try and see what happens. Vista will let you know if anything is not compatible during the install.

Hi DA, Yes I did think of Open Office and since you just confirmed it will work with Vista I will suggest it to them as an alternative. I considered the option of just trying Office 97 to see if it would install and work. Not sure of that option. I poked around on the MS Support site but couldn't find anything about it. I'm not very good at using MS Support. I may poke around there a bit more. Pooh Bear
