show me the window in your shower!

We're about to embark on our first true remodeling project after the tiles in our shower started to fall off....bringing the wall with them!!!

I think I have a pretty good idea what we want to do, but the one thing that has me totally perplexed is how to handle the window in our bathtub/shower. It's a huge 34"x44" regular wood frame double hung window right now, which has got to go. The question is what to replace it with? I dont care for the look of glass block in that house (its a cape) and I DO want a window that can be opened for additional air and venting.

So what have other people done? Right now I'm leaning toward tiling all the way to the window with a marble sill but am open to any other options that might be available. Something that doesnt require a 2nd curtain in there especially :D

I have a 36" x 54" window in my shower. I love it! it pretty much takes up the one wall and over looks the lake. It lets a lot of light into the room too.

"What did you do at the area where your doors will go?" Huh?, I was supposed to plan that? Shiiite! We have 12 X 24 tiles, the end walls where the doors will go are ~ 36" long, so two tiles cut to 18" side by side. Doors will go somewhere on the tile, centered on the sill. I know some of the many hundreds/thousands of dollars spent on tools/supplies was for special drill bits, so hopefully DH has that all figured out... Got the niche cleaned, asked DH to caulk all the edges so that I could take a pic, he figured he didn't have enough time before heading out to Karate, so the plan is to do it tomorrow night...now that we're on the home stretch, I'm not really needing to nag so much, the hardest part is over, and I think he's almost as anxious as me to have it all done. (He still needs to make the medicine cabinet, and I still need to design it, once that is done I can get the carpenter to make the storage cupboard for over the toilet. I want them both to line up exactly on the bottom edge, so can't order one until the other is made...)

We have an open shower - different design, but open at the top and definitely no door or curtain to contain the warmth. Plus we keep the bathroom window and doors open as much as possible - due to the design of our house, we really don't want steam build up in the bathroom. So, yes, the shower is a bit cold. But it's a terrific shower design, and in the winter we just hustle from the warm shower spray into the warmth of the rest of the house!

Show us your kitchen! And what style do you gravitate to? What colors do you like? I'm not even going to do anything to my windows for the forseeable future. I have a piece of fabric (just one?....um. No.)That I keep thinking I will hold up to the window. Maybe tomorrow ;-)

Thank you for posting that example! I was just checking in on this thread hoping to see an example of where I might locate it on a tub/shower wall in terms of height since I will want to access it while lying down as well as while standing. Not a big deal (obviously!!!) but I want it to look right and to function right. I'm sure he is going to lose it on me. I have found all of this quite stressful at a time when work is also quite stressful. Oh well. This, along with a couple of the bathroom rated command hooks for loofahs and we should be all good for storage sice none of my bottles are more than 13 inches tall. I was not thinking quite clearly yesterday when I went to the Tile Shop. I wonder if he will also charge me $200 for tiling the little one? I hope not. He really seems lacking in creativity and a desire to do anything beyond what he "has seen" or certainly to do what I want; first on today's agenda will be me telling him that we are going to find a way to recess a medicine cabinet in a structural wall (after all it does support only the roof, not another whole story). He told me yesterday it would be impossible to do so. I really think he usually just doesn't want to do the work or put in the effort and hopes I will just take him at his word if he seems unpleasant enough to deal with. What s smart strategy! It really is not reflected in his other AL reviews but maybe they just took it as him being a seasoned authority. I probably should remind him I am an Angie's list member.

Your best bet would be to use a vinyl clad Energy star rated replacement window. Inset it so that there would be a return to the frame of the window that you could tile (and of course, use the marble sill for) and then seal the tile and marble sill to the frame, as well as waterproofing the surface UNDER the tile and marble, sealing that to the frame, as well.

that sounds similar to what I was thinking bill. But if I get a replacement window with privacy glass, do you think it would be ok to get rid of the dreaded 2nd curtain? I wasn't sure what the impact of shower water directly hitting the inside of a double hung window would be...

That's my intention. I don't care for windows in a shower area because of the possibility of water intrusion. However, there are times when it's just not avoidable. My downstairs bathroom is just such a time. It's a 100 year old house, and in order to run venting up to the roof for a vent fan, I'd have to do some major renovation, either in the upstairs hall, or my stepson's room, neither of which are acceptable to me, so the window stays. Now, I just went through the expense of replacing every window in this house last fall with the vinyl clad energy star thermo-pane windows, and the one over the downstairs tub is privacy glass. Very shortly, the walls will be coming down, along with everything else in that bathroom, right down to the joists and studs, and we're going to start right from scratch and rebuild the room.... except for the window, obviously, and I'm going to build it back exactly as I described above-- with a small return that can be waterproofed and sealed to the window frame. There's no other way that I'd trust it.

This is what I want and am trying to find in a pvc or vinyl clad or something! It's a French casement. Any help would be appreciated, too!
