Long story but here goes. A friend of ours neighbors wife left him , just walked out. Any way he ended up filing for divorce and lost his house in foreclosure. Well the friends nine year old grandson went over to the house and door was standing open. He went in and there was still a lot of stuff piled into corner. On top was a gateway solo 5100. Little boy went home and told his grandma and she called the man and told him about the little boy going into his home and finding the stuff. Before she could apologize he told her they could have anything on the pile they wanted, it belonged to x wife and she was now living out of state. Any way the kid has tried to get the laptop to work and it just won't boot up. Green lights just keep flashing like it's trying. Any idea what he can do to get it to boot. He's just playiing with it to see if he can get it going.

With out knowing the history of the computer we would all be guessing at what may be wrong it could be anything and probably needs major repair more then likely that's why it was left behind.. You could take the battery out & only use the ac adapter if you have it and see what happens, this thing may have been dropped it is really hard to give you any sort of direction here...

Might try holding or tapping the F8 on boot for save mode.
Also the same with the Ctrl key, which does safe mode on I forget.. winME/98.

Some laptops have special boot modes with various function keys.

I'd probably search and make it a win98 boot floppy, maybe get lucky.

Yes, They don't have them. I've also checked at a very good woodworking store. They have them but they are not skid-proof. I want something that grabs the surface pretty well.

Thanks. My laptop is 9 years old and it is slowly coming to the end of its life. Since I don't have internet at home I have to use the mobile hotspot off of my phone but I can never get a signal. I have Firefox and Edge on my laptop but it's almost impossible to get either one to work at this point. The IT department at my work said one of the issues is the fact that it is so old which is why I'm considering getting a new one. If I do or when I do Chrome will be the first thing I install on to it. Thanks so much for the info.

I take it that he is gettingnothing on the screen. No error messages etc? Have him try a hard boot by removing the a/c plug, removing the battery, then holding down the power button for about 30 secs. Put the battery back in, plug in the a/c and try and start it

Thanks for the replies, guess it needs to go back to the junk heap. Since there was all kinds of things that belongs to the wife and he was just getting rid of it out of spite thought we might get it going for the kid. All the green lights blink but that's as far as it goes. Thanks again.
