P/U....partial unemployment??

Its very distressing to me that after 22 years with the company, I am being forced to work just 20 hours per week...no OT....just 20.

I only qualify for the 20 hours because I gave unlimited availabilty. If I were to ask for a day off it would come out of the 20 I "would have been scheduled.

I know its the economy, I get it.

I was told I should apply for patial unemployment.

I was just wondering how that works and if it would be for me??

Last year at this time I was working at least 30-34 hours per week and we were doing ok...now the cut is starting to hurt us.

I am pretty bummed about this whole thing but the bosses keep saying its going to get better but finacially I don't know how much longer I can hang in there.

Grrrr!!!

Mary, My intention in telling you this, I hope you can see his side a little better, because I think I might just get it. I just got my degree (political science with CJA as an addtional major) after 23 years of attending a university! Yea! Hurray! Finally. Needless to say, I am not interested in being a police officer any more at the ripe old age of 40-ahem, er something. I am too old. And yes, you need to be a young spry kind of person to wrangle bad guys. So I keep thinking to myself, what can I do with this freakin' degree? You know what you can do with a CJ? Parole officer, probation officer, police officer, or a corrections officer. That's it. So with his blown knee, he can't do the most lucrative and interesting one, police officer. I can see he'd have no interest in doing the others as he'd be dealing day-in-day-out with those society has found too hard to handle. Not just kicking them into a jail. Or maybe he hadn't thought about the others. I am still trying to brainstorm for myself, so maybe he is too (aside--I wish I could be a detective without being a beat officer. That would be interesting!!!). So basically, he's lost everything he's worked for, for the past few years. And has to start from scratch.

"This is the time we should spend money to help our economy if we possibly can. That's why recently I've gone into my savings and done a few long-wanted improvements around here." Especially if you spend the money to HIRE PEOPLE instead of just buying more stuff (especially imported stuff from the TJMaxxes and Targets people race to when they don't have much cash). Put people to work! That was part of our big outside project last year - DH had gotten a bonus at work, and we got a good tax refund, and we felt like we could afford to dip into our savings a little bit, so we dumped a chunk of our cash into the pockets of local workers. If you can afford to do so, it's even more important to do so now since things are worse now for a LOT of people than they were last year. This year, though... no decorating and some of the "socks and underwear projects" (phrase stolen from the Old House Forum, meaning the necessary and boring stuff that no one is really going to see but that just has to be done) will be put off for another year. No bonus this year, very little tax refund, have been helping support family members in worse shape, we're taking a really hard hit on the medical-bills front this year and have just discovered that DH's car is highly unlikely to last to autumn which means coming up with a down payment and rearranging the budget to fit in car payments. Although DH works for an extremely stable company and we know his job is safe (in fact they're finally hiring another person for his department) I won't risk the savings we have left for anything as, well, downright petty as decorating. It's been months since I've looked at eBay or Craigslist, and I used to be a major addict! Ah well, I just decorate in my head.

Thanks for the advice! I have been thinking a lot about this. I still don't know what to do, but I won't be posting any pics of DS until I've figured out what to do about XMIL. @Lady_q-Thanks for your input! I am weighing it very heavily. I want XMIL to be involved with DS, but I also don't buy her innocent helpless act. I think jthe best way to be civil is to fortify my boundaries. @LH-I am not sure what blocking them would do. I'm not sure they'd even notice unless they went to XMIL's page and didn't see me there. Facebook is ALL KINDS of problematic!!!!! Just one more reason to block all of them. And, yes, DS has a cell phone that I provide him (which is another thing that ticked me off about the text that said for DS not to tell me about the money). I think you're right that a little bit of the responsibility goes on DS. I just don't get how X thinks DS is going to LIVE with him if he can't even get him home on time. Ya know? LH you said "I'd be inclined to think XMIL didn't realize the repercussions of tagging herself, and X and GF in the photo. I doubt she meant anything by it." I actually think that maybe she DID know. See, she doesn't really know how to use technology very well, and constantly asks X how to do things on the computer and Facebook. I have heard her do this at DS' games. I have a scenario: See last Friday, she commented on the picture and said she wanted to put it on her page. Well since I have my pictures set up so that only friends can see them, X and GF couldn't see the picture. So I'm fairly sure that, since she didn't tag it until Tuesday night, she and X got together to figure out how they could see the picture. PO1- you has a great point about blocking all of them. That might just be the best thing to do. I know for sure I want to block X and GF.

Ann, you need a (((((((BIG HUG)))))))). I thought it happened to me only. 7 yrs. ago, I went through almost the same thing. I was also office manager and +++++ duties. I was so devasted when found out that the owner, my boss, disappeared. His family couldn't even find him. He got into drugs & alcohol and hopped from one motel to another so we couldn't tracked him down. Then, he was using company money on his hotel living & drugs & alcohol. The bank account would be empty as soon as I deposited some checks that we collect for the business. When we were able to track him down, he would signed several checks and disappeared again. After a couple of times, his brother got smart and had him signed several blank checks before he did the disappearing act again. I got smart and as soon as I collected some money for the company, I'd deposit them and cashed my paycheck at the same time before it went empty. Not only I had to take care of the business but his family too! I had to comfort his wife and took her to take care of business. He normally took care of financial things so his wife had no clue what to do, even paying a bill! After several months, he finally went to rehab and got back with the company. While, he was at rehab, I went to look for another job. Fortunately, I found another job just in time of him getting back with the business. I later found out that I was hired due to my reputation of holding up the company until the owner got back. It was 4 months of hell so I understand what you're going through! If your husband is disabled and you're paying mortgage, you may want to checkout the link below to see if there's any assistant that could help you. I've read somewhere about reverse mortgage that you may want to check out too. Also, does your county have a disability homestead for your residential property tax? I'm disabled and live in Houston. We have that discount for disabled homeowner which cuts my tax in 1/2 just about. If I find anything else, I'll let you know. Sorry to hear it's hit you, too Susie!

I have been cut from 30-35 hours a week to 8 so I feel your pain.

Had an interview today that I think went well....am keeping my fingers crossed.

I hope you can hold out until it gets better. I have never heard of "partial unemployment". Let us know how that works if you look into it.

Keep your chin up! Can you find a part-time job to hold you over until things turn around?

Susie, sorry to hear about this. I can tell you how it usually works, but in your case it might be different because you are a New Jersey resident working in PA.
You register on the PA unemployment website. If you qualify, then every two weeks you submit a form saying how many hours you worked in that period. Of course all this has to be verified with your employer. You get different amounts of Unemployment Compensation for each time period depending on how many hours you worked. Up to whatever the maximum is.

Susie - can you get a Union Rep to help you with this? As I recall, Acme is a union store unline many of the other grocery stores in the area......

My hours have been cut, too, and someone suggested filing for unemployment due to cut hours, but I haven't yet. I never know when my full time hours will be reinstated. In my like of work, it's very weather related. In just a few weeks, it'll be hopping again...I hope. So, I'm afraid by the time I filed and get through all the red tape, I'll be back to full time. Well, afraid is not a good word, but I just wonder if it's worth it for just a few more weeks.

Susie and Linda, I'm sorry you're going through this. I recently heard or red the new acronym...ITE.. In This Economy. Well, ITE really bITEs!

I had a co-worker who worked full time -- 40 hours a week. The employer cut her back to three days a week. She was able to claim unemployment for the two days she lost.

She had a salaried position, so if you are paid hourly, I'm not sure how that would work.

I agree with Alexa -- go to the union. When I worked for the Free Library of Philadelphia, most of the workers were city workers and therfore unionized. I was astounded at the clout held by the union.

CC -- you wouldn't have believed it. Short of coming to work and murdering people, city workers could not lose their jobs. I will say that most of the people at FLP were good and dedicated workers, but there were some bad apples who took advantage of every chance to goof off.

I worked for the Foundation, so I didn;t belong to a union.

Sigh...there is nothing the union can do as this was part of the contract we signed last summer.
All employees will be guarenteed 20 hours so long as they give unlimited availabilty.

Some weeks I get more...either they call me in early or ask me to stay late. However its nothing I can count on.

I have applied for a few part time jobs but so far nada.

Oh and I did not like to offer the company made to us in regard to the contract...I thought it $ucked out loud!!
I knew this would happen so I voted against it.....the vote was something like 4078-40 in favor-it was a very sad sad day.
