Having just switched to a new computer with Vista Home Premium I'm exploring browsers. IE is much improved, but I used K-Meleon on my old machine and like it better.

Now: not to restart "Browser Wars", but I'd like to ask about 64 bit Vista being compatable with K-Meleon. If it's not going to work I think I'll go with Firefox.

And in case it matters, I'm also "planning" (as opposed to actually doing anything!) a partition for Ubuntu.

Regarding loading the Ubuntu why not try it on the old computer? That way you can abandon it with ease if it does not meet your expectations. Linux formats it's partition in a way that Windows does not understand and vice versa so if you wanted to remove the Linux from your new box you might have to wipe the drive and start over from scratch. Just a thought.

Ubuntu has a version that plays slong with the windows ntfs on vista installs... on a seperate existing partition. I tried it - it screwed my vista user accounts up with its bootloader and cost is several headaches and it has left me with a life long reminder again of why not to install ubuntu or any of the more user friendly linux versions.

I don't really even understand the difference. between a search engine and the browser? the browser would be IE, Firefox, MS Edge, Chrome... that's where you have your tabs, favorites list etc search engine would be - google, bing etc - what you pull up in your browser to search the internet. I stick with google for searching and I hate MS Edge. Will be reDLing IE in the next few days to give it a whirl if I can port over my favorites list. Otherwise I'm not switching even tho MSE is a pita.

Seniorgal, using Firefox and an older Win7 desktop, I found a 70 character subject line, followed by a box for my new thread. At the bottom of that, a clickable box Next. Clicking 'Next' took me to the option of having my post show in several different forums I think. No Thank You, I'm where I wanted to be and chose none of them. I believe the second step was Post and I had the post that I could not accomplish using IE11.

I've used Avast for a number of years, and have been very happy with it for antivirus protection. I have heard nothing bad about the Avast browser, but don't use it because I like Chrome. The Avast browser does have built-in protections that Firefox doesn't. My suggestion is to download it and try it since you're not restricted to having just one browser (I have four browsers on my computer and switch around sometimes). After you download, you can easily export all of your Firefox bookmarks over to the Avast browser, and then they will be in both places regardless of which one you want to use. Their VPN is reliable and easy to use. Whether you need one depends on whether you are concerned about the fact that your ISP can view everything you do online and can sell the data they collect from tracking your activities. VPNs also help protect you from having data stolen or intercepted when you are trying to use a public wi-fi system, like at the airport. VPNs also have other security advantages. I don't know if this could be the problem, if the toolbar that's missing is the top one in Richard's photo that says Firefox, File, Edit, View...etc...but a couple of times when that has disappeared, I couldn't figure out how to make it appear again, then discovered that I'd clicked on the green button in the top left corner (who knows why) and it expands to full screen eliminating the tool bar. The only way to find it again (for me) is to hover my cursor up near the very top of the page and the toolbar appears but won't stay showing. I have to click again on the green button to make it return to the normal view. I know it's basic knowledge for some, but if you don't know that it can be very frustrating.

Thanks for the warnings! I'll think again.

Unfortunately, my older computer lacks memory and the bios is too old. Guess I'll shelve that dream for a while.

All that aside, I guess I'll download Firefox.

well what are the stats on the old pc just because you might not be able to use ubuntu on it you might be able to use one of the more light weight distros like puppy linux, damn small linux or the light version of my fave Mepis AntiX.
it takes very little on the resources to run them.
I personally love linux and am using Mepis right now, which is my preferred distro, have a dual boot with a ubuntu version but never use it, I just love Mepis it just works with out any hassles.

I would definitely do some research and visit some of the dedicated forums for which ever you choose to use and find out the proper way to do a dual boot, it can certainly be done many people do a dual boot system with linux and windows. There are some excellent guides/ tutorials out there on how to do it, this is a learning process so you just have to be prepared for that and all that comes with it. Mine has been a very good experience.
Another alternative you could do is just get another cheap hard drive or even take your old one out of that pc and put it in the new pc totally separate from your vista and load your linux on it, keep it totally separate.

While you're investigating browsers, take a look at both Opera and Chrome. I have four browsers on my XP computer, and from time to time have used all of them. My personal favorite is Opera, but Chrome is probably fastest of all.

I use Firefox and Safari, but Safari seems to have issues with GW and a couple other sites I visit. Still, it's nice to have options.
