Anybody try and recommend this over the one that comes with your system?

They want $30 for that!

JKDefrag is a freeware and is only about a half megabyte in size. I use this one and find it works well.

Defraggler is another freeware. This is created by the same folk who created Crap Cleaner. However it is only beta at the moment but I read good reports on a geek forum I belong to.

The reviews on it are not that great and if you are not a power user then why even bother??? The regular defrag on the pc is fine for the average user. Plus it is just one more program on the pc to go haywire. Here is a quote from one of the reviews:
"Unfortunately I will not be using UD because it failed my "torture test" and my "large files" test. It chokes on big files. The moment I created my two large SQL data files on drive C:, the analyse time went from a few seconds to 14 minutes. When I decompressed these files to their full size and then requested a defrag, it failed, or at least didn't do anything to defrag the file. I should point out that WDD failed to defrag them either, and contig.exe complained about not enough free disk space. But a US$39.95 program should be able to defrag any file that isn't locked, IMHO."

you need to choose the IE flash player to download with IE and you need to choose the firefox version and download it with firefox if you use those browsers, You must get the proper version and use that browser to download and install. when you go to that link Zep provided called reinstall flash you will see which browser it is for if it is not the rigth one then you see that link that says Different operating system or browser? click that and it will offer you the links to the other options you could run the Secunia OSI and it will tell you what needs updating nad also provide the link directly to it. for any of these make sure any extras are unchecked including on the download page any thing McAfee or Norton related. no sound from WMP on Win 7 laptop since defragging

Thanks, Owbist. I tried that yesterday, but nothing changed with WMP. However, I thought it might be a good idea to redo the procedure. Some striking changes occurred this time. All of my WAV files now open in Windows Live Movie Maker. I tried to play a music CD and got the box that said Windows couldn't open the file. When I checked the properties of the music, it shows as a CDA File... (I'm not alarmed - I know there has to be a fix.) OK, I thought... I'll just go back to the Media Features and redo the procedure. However, there are now no check marks in the WMP or Media Center boxes! I record 3 church services a week on this laptop. I take the sound from - I believe it's called a preamp - (signal too strong directly from mixer) and am able to record in Audacity. I now have audio in Audacity whereas I lost it after the defrag. However, the wav files I made from the audacity project files now open in window movie maker and are unplayable... I don't think I will ever defrag this laptop again!!! :)

Just poking around in File Manager and the only icon that responds to right/click=properties is "computer". It appears MS has reduced the right click for properties as a use for all tool. I can't figure why. Slight diversion, I have started using my laptop computers as a laptop, not as desk top with remote keyboard and display. I now find that when typing, such as now, the display will suddenly transfer to another site/display. Or, the (just now it happened) I will suddenly find the typing has either stopped, or transfered to some other location on the message field. What's up, am I touching the touch pad with my hands, which are poised just above the pad? Makes me wonder if I can turn the touch pad off, and use a wireless mouse and not have trouble with interrupts springing up while I type.

Dont know what windows version you are running but think I might boot up in safe mode to a command prompt and type in defrag /? which will show you the built in windows defrag options. One of which tries to consolidate space. Command line probably look like;>defrag c: -w you can open a cmd window with admin rights from within windows too ... but safe mode will do your best defrag.

I use an automatic defragmenter for defragging my desktop. It keeps all the 4 drives in great shape, and despite having thousands of files and programs on the drives, access speed is very fast. Most useful of all, I have been able to eliminate scheduling a defrag, from my essential regular PC maintenance task list,...the auto defragger does everything for me automatically :)
