I used to have a Facebook account although never used it. Then tried to set one up for niece/granddaughter on me, but could not. Removed mine.

That is not any of your friends sending those requests, it is Facebook trying to increase membership.

I was getting 5 or 6 a day but now 2 or 3 a week but I just blocked the address so they all go in the junk folder out of the way.

I got an invitation when my sis joined face book and also when my step daughter did. They must have given everyone's email addresses that they have to face book. That is the only way face book could have gotten it. I was a little put out especially with my step daughter. She gave out my family and friends address to face book. I have been on facebook with an alias to search for my great grandson's family when he died. I don't care for it at all.

Facebook is kind of sneaky in the way that they get access to your address book. An inexperienced user could inadvertently grant permission without even realizing what they were doing.

pkponder, I think the people invite family and friends to visit them and then face books gets the email addresses. I don't see how they could make the connection to my email address other wise.

No, Emma, there are automatic ways in which Facebook takes over your address book.

No John your not. I'm not a member. I have a life, am way to busy, and have too many responsibilities to be on Facebook or Twitter sharing what I had for lunch or that the dog just pooped on the carpet.

When I have to communicate with someone I use a really nice device. I use the telephone and call them.

I am not on face book either. I don't understand this need people have for constant contact with someone. They don't seem to be able to go to anywhere without a phone on their ear. Doesn't anyone like quiet.

Some of you may have misconceptions about why people use Facebook. There are lots of reasons aside from the ones that are listed above. I'm just saying that different folks do enjoy other means of communication. I will not pick up the phone and call friends or family often, I just spend all of my working life on the phone and don't want it in my spare time. I can check Facebook when I have time and my corn flakes don't get soggy while I'm on the phone.

When I went on face book trying to locate the family of my great grandson, I saw a thing that said find your friends and it wanted email addresses. I am sure my family did that not knowing FB would use the emails to send me stuff. I kept getting invitations to join my family and friends for a couple of months before it stopped.

I also still like the old fashioned telephone......you noticed I said 'telephone' and not iPhone!
And if they live in town talking over lunch!

Years ago my niece invited family to visit a place she made on the net, it was a private place. We posted family photos and left messages for each other and it was fun, but very private. It didn't last long, my family was pretty much wrapped in what they were doing in their real lives.

I always wonder if this need to "share" is a by-product of the voyeurism created by the too many stupid "reality" shows.

I think popular culture encourages such narcissism in a variety of ways. It puzzles me why anyone over the age of 18 would think that the life details many post on FB would be of interest to anyone. Paradoxically, many FB-active people I know are shy and insecure.

What's his name started with a good idea, a web place for incoming classmates to get to know one another. I think it's run its course, recent press reports say usage is falling. I feel lucky, most of the people I know in the FB-prime ages have better things to do and don't bother with it.

Makes me wonder about privacy in a more worrisome aspect.......with all we hear about 'so and so has invaded the privacy of xx by somehow gathering info online'.

I don't think the odds are any worse online than in our every day lives. I try to be as safe as I know how to be, then I don't worry about it. Life is to short to be worry about things that may not happen and things you have no control over.

Unfortunately there is no standard defintion of privacy. It is open to interpretation by each individual.

I don't care about cookies. I don't care about companies sharing mailing lists. I don't care if I am walking a street and it has video suveillance cameras. And, there are a lot more things I don't care about.

I do care about my family's and my well-being, safety, and security albeit physical, financial or real property. So to live well and safe I keep two feet on shore, take steps to prevent negativity, and pay attention.
