Checked something off my 'bucket list'

Skating the Rideau Canal in Ottawa has been on my life's "to-do" list for as long as I can remember. The day was perfect- crisp and clear- and my dd and her friend and I skated 10k. It was a wonderful adventure and fully lived up to my hopes.

If you ever get the chance to skate it, I hope you go.

First Jo, you're a very pretty woman with a fantastic welcoming smile!

I didn't even know about skating this canal. Probably because winter activities leave me cold! lol I tried ice skating when I was a kid living in Ely, Nevada. My dog kept knocking me down. :(

10k is a long ways! No wonder you're sore. You burned enough calories to have a cheeseburger/fries/shake for lunch today though!

Still, it looks too cold for me. I walked the garden Saturday checking for spring bulbs!

How will you turn this pile with the landscape fabric , bricks and chicken wire in the way ? It is easier ( for me ) to build a more stable fence with a moveable opening simply to keep the dogs out of the pile and to let me get in to stir . I have a dog that likes to eat decomposed grass clippings - yuck ! I also have an armadillo that loves to rummage through the compost and constantly upended the chicken wire circle no matter how well I staked the wire down - even weighted the edges with bricks . The armadillo won every time . Now I have the shed as one side and left over chain link gates as the other three sides . I can swing one side open to get in and all the other critters stay out . With very little mixing , I have perfect compost in no time thanks to the heat and rains . I prefer compost directly on the ground with no floor . Much easier to manage and allows the earthworms easy access . Start off simple and go from there .

I finaly looked up the ZD rose, It sounds much like the Peggy Martin except the color looks a little deeper and it may not have the multi-flora bunches of blooms. i can't wait to get one. i've found that the Peggy Martin roots best if layered in the ground in the fall. I don't cut them loose from the mother plant until spring and I wait a few weeks before potting up the baby plants. they tend to go into shock when moved but usually recover nicely in a couple of weeks. Hi graywings, I started reading this thread without noting the dates the posts were written. Dave, I don't want to put you on the spot, but I am wondering how the accounts you spoke of in 2007, the 72c Guaranteed Savings accounts (equity-indexed fixed life contract, or annuity contract) have weathered over the last three years. Heh... you can "put me on the spot" in this regard *ANY* time ;~) Both the equity indexed life & annuity products have *VERY* strongly outperformed the unprotected stock index markets over the same periods of time (since 2007. In fact, going back from today to almost as far as you'd like.) Their design is that they capture & credit any annual upside (to a maximum gain,) and lock that amount permanently to your credit. On any years with a downside, your account sits tight with no losses at all (guaranteed by the insured backings of the company reserves and the state's guarantee association (each state's equivalent of a regional "FDIC" in essence.) If you put $100,000 in the S&P 500 for the last decade, you'd actually be holding a bit LESS than $100,000 today (not deducting the tax or management fees that may also be applied.) The same $100,000 in an insured indexing account would be approximately $211,768, net of everything (taxes & fees,) *OR* about an average annual tax-free rate of return of 7.06% Alternatively, those folks who decided to take their working capital OUT of growth, and put it into their real estate equity, have been double-stung; Not only have they gained nothing toward retirement, their equity values have decayed from 10-30% (depending on the area.) The clients who've been with us the last 3-5 years have been rather relieved, ecstatic, and pleasantly bored, all at the same time. Its a very nice financial reality to provide. 10k! My quads are whimpering in sympathy. I have ice skated twice in my life. It wasn't pretty either time. The last time the kids had to come find me in the office of the skating rink holding an ice pack to my head as the manager filled out an accident report... I grew up in Tucson. What can I say.

How cool is that! Having lived in the south for most of my life, the idea of skating on a lake or river terrifies me. The idea of being somewhere cold enough that you can do that without worry is almost even more scary, lol. It looks like a lot of fun. Glad you were able to cross that one off. What's next?

Yay for you! I sooooo envy you, too! I used to love to ice skate now and then when I was younger. I always wanted to skate on a pond - the canal sounds a great way to get from A to B!

Jo, you are so pretty. The exercise and chill look like they put a nice glow on your cheeks.

That looks like so much fun and I'd love to try it. There is a small lake near my home and we used to skate there. Unfortunately the new owners no longer allow skating. I can't blame them since they are exposiong themselves to tremendous risk in this litlgious age. Also, it doesn't get as cold as it used to so the lake isn't often solid enough to skate anyway.

I skated a lot as a kid at a local rink. Figure skating. I even earned my preliminary level ribbon. I skated with my kids when they were little but haven't been on skates in many years. It's on my bucket list to do again before I croak.

Congratulations,you look GREAT!! I used to skate a bit as a kid, but only on a real rink! My ankles hurt in sympathy for you!
I don't have a bucket list yet, but seeing more of the world would surely be on the list. Who knew that Ottowa even had a canal!

You go snow bunny! I'm so glad that you had a great time and created a wonderful memory for years to come.

I live in the way South and the closest thing to ice skating is a rink. We tried as kids and it wasn't very much fun. It hurt our ankles, bruised our tushes and just plain old cold for our warm blood.

I'm so glad you posted a pic. I've never heard of it either but it looks like a good bucket list item. I bet it's gorgeous at Christmas, sigh. We had about 5 minutes of snow flurries this year. Dh and I had to go stand outside and watch, lol. Glad you had fun!

Jo you must be so happy to cross one off the old list! What a fun experience! I miss ice skating, I used to do it a lot as a kid. Dad took us to "Ye Olde Skating Pond" at the local park, the one with the warming shack with wood floors that had carvings in them from when dad went there as a kid. Also skated a lot on the local lakes. Now I don't even know if they freeze anymore! I think they closed the skating rink. I would love to dust off the old skates, they are down in the basement languishing.

You guys are so nice! Thanks for the compliments, but really, everyone is beautiful in Canada. I think there is something in the water. Just look at AnnT and Diana. I rest my case.
Glad you all enjoyed the picture. Hopefully, I inspired someone else to try skating the canal.

Good for you and too cool!! It's been years since I've ice skated...roller too. Don't think I'll make it up to the canal but I'm going to suggest hitting one of the ice/roller rinks down here to my group.

That is so cool, Jo!

I skated all the time as a kid. We lived 1 block from a local park and in the winter they always flooded a rink. What memories that brings back!

(Oh yeah...the warming house attendant guys were all super cute to a 9th grader! LOL)
