How did you meet your significant other?

I was watching Jennifer Aniston hawking her latest movie "He's Just Not That Into You" on Jay Leno, and they agreed that you can't meet anyone meaningful in a bar. I take offense to that since I DID meet my wonderful DH in a bar and I really can't believe we are the only ones in the world that met that way.....

So how DID you meet your current significant other?

Happy Anniversary, Shaun! You two make a great looking couple!

I met my husband at a Jewish singles event. I met my first husband at a Hillel event (Jewish college student organization.) Funny, huh?

When I was in college an acquaintance of mine met her future husband at a bar. They're still married. Actually they met at a disco. That tells you how long they've been married.

Tricia, do tell, did he ever tell you WHY he stood you up all those times??

    Happy Anniversary Shaun!!

Your Fragrant Cloud reference reminded me of an embarrassing moment in junior college. There is a very old diner near the campus which has been there almost since the earth cooled, and probably has all the original employees. A friend, who was about as red headed as anyone can possibly be, was commenting on someone who had very artificially red hair. As he laughingly blurted out, "Waitress red hair", the whole place fell silent and all the little old lady waitresses, all of whom used the same tint of "Waitress red hair", turned to glare at us. I wanted to crawl under the tile! LOL! Kim

Did you meet your summer goals this year?

Hey T2D, So - you did manager to somehow rid your garden of woodchucks? You don't need to tell us how that was accomplished, but I bet that's a huge relief that plants can actually grow now. Good thing they didn't molest your new orange roses. Your slope area - is that the one you showed in a thread about converting a perennial garden to have more shrubs? I remember you had a sloped area with a nice assortment of mature shrubs. If you changed that area I'd be interested in knowing why, since that is the exact look I am going for. I have not attempted a mosaic but that is a great idea. Are you going to try it? It would be relatively simple: just prep a sand bed, gather an assortment of stones, and arrange/rearrange to your heart's content. In addition to natural rocks, leftover pieces from a place that makes kitchen countertops would be really fun. You could have marble or whatever else suits your fancy. Relaxing in the garden. Huh. Doesn't that seem like the last thing we get around to? :) We're getting better about that too. Our main seating area in the garden now has afternoon shade thanks to maturing trees, and we hang out there a lot more often now. Speaking of goals - I've had a pile of mulch on the driveway for so long I think it's in our Google Earth pictures. But yesterday I shoveled up the last of it and swept the spot clean. Whoa... it feels odd to have it gone. Of course I need more mulch now but we can enjoy the clean, empty driveway for at least a little while, can't we?

Is your spouse/significant other a garden nut?

    Q

Paige, Don't give up on your hopes of finding a new partner who'll appreciate what you enjoy. You have something special about yourself that you can share! Look at it this way.... you can learn from someone else just as they can learn from you. This mutual respect that other posters mentioned is the key. When I met my 2nd husband he wasn't much of a gardener; he and his first wife had sporatically kept vegetable gardens over the years. After we married and bought a house, we we began to make it "ours" inside and outside. He started out just helping me to build walls, move rocks, shop for plants and dig the holds & plant. He'd go with me to garden centers and began to form his own opinions of what he liked to see in our yard, so we'd buy those plants/flowers and put them in. Because he's not fond of the daylily plants that I can never get enough of, I've slowed down that urge. Because he really loved the idea of a Heritage River Birch in our backyard, we planted one. He feels that the gardens are "his" too. Now I find him watering and weeding. He loves seeing the gardens change over time, I guess because they contain both of us. He tells me that he was influenced by my love of gardening and how excited I got over growing things. I kind of shared my hobby with him. But he also shared his hobbies with me. I appreciate his need to hear music played most of the time and his love of painting, so I support him with both his hobbies. I hang up his paintings all over our home... the other day he came home with a new orchid plant for our front room. Molie

What if your significant other doesn't LOVE the old house

    Q

    Comments (13)
Our property has been in the family since the 1930's and our house was started in 1941 and was added on through the years up until 1958. It's been in my family the whole time and my parents loved it deeply, as do I. Thank goodness my DH also carries the torch. When we first met I was a divorced woman with a small son and he was a bachelor with a house of his own. When we blended our lives we decided to stay in "my" house, since that's the home my son was used to. We eventually sold his house and ever since then have poured our blood, sweat, tears and considerable money into "our" house. We've made it ours through the years, and even though we do sometimes complain about the amount of time we've spent working on the house vs. going places and doing things, we don't complain for long. We have 7 acres of beauty and love it here. Sometimes we talk about moving, but it's only talk. We don't think we'd be happy anyplace else, at least not at this point in our lives. When we visit friends who have new/er houses, there's still maintenance to do, and to tell you the truth, unless it's a million dollar baby (and even then), the newer homes are not built to last. When we were renovating a section of the house a few years back, our contractor looked at the construction of the outer walls and said that "a hurricane could come through here and your house would come through it like a champ"...I don't think you can say that about alot of the newer houses out there today. As suggested, take DH for a drive through a community of McMansions or similar develped communities and ask him if he thinks he'd be happier living in a Stepford Wives neighborhood. Chances are when he really thinks about it, he wouldn't. After all, men have to complain about *something*, so don't despair. It's a guy thing.

    Happy Anniversary Shaun & Lou!

My DH and brother are both amateur radio operators (and I later also became one) and one day a hundred years ago it seems, my brother heard a fellow from Tenerife talking to another radio ham in California. My brother waited until they finished their conversation and then called the fellow in Tenerife. After they had talked a while, my brother mentioned that he had a sister working in the same city and maybe he could give her a phone call to pass on greetings from her brother. (These were days before internet.) So the fellow got in touch with me.....and...and.....here we are much later and have been married nearly 25 years.

The only thing more cliche than meeting in a bar...marrying your high school sweetheart!

I was an "older woman" (in senior yr.) and he was a HS junior. We married after DH's junior yr. of college, because back then you just didn't move in together.

We joke that we weren't just broke, we were beyond broke, with student loans to pay off before we could save to buy our first home. I was the main breadwinner for a time, DH was a FT student and worked 2 PT jobs.

Lots of hard work getting to where we are today, but a great deal of satisfaction having done it ourselves, as a team. Hope it's been a good example for our kids.

Have been a couple for 37 yrs. and married 32 yrs. in May.

We met on the internet. A local radio station (that neither of us listens to) had a singles page where you could post an ad. I posted a really lame ad because I didn't want anyone to contact me (I wanted to do the picking). His ad looked the most normal so we emailed and then met for a blind date. Lucky for me he likes bossy women. That was 11 years ago and next month will be our 9 year anniversary.

My sister met her husband in a bar (I was with her). They must be close to their 20 year mark.

I met my current BF, who is the closest thing I have to an SO at the moment, on the train. I had worked late and missed my usual train. He got out early (he's a lawyer and always works into the evening)and ran to make that same train. I think he jumped on just before it pulled out.

He sat in the seat facing mine and struck up a conversation, which is unusual since people don't talk much on the train. Within 20 minutes, when my stop came along, he got my name and the town where I live. He found me in the phone book and called me the next night. We met for lunch and later, dinner.

I met my XH in high school. Too young.

We were friends for years, played cards, my kids in community theater where he was a producer, same interest and some of the same friends...and then he needed a date for a cocktail party and asked me to please please go with him. I didn't count that as a date because we were just friends. But then he asked me 2 weeks later to go to a Mardi Gras Ball with him....I then started thinking that was our first date. I even joked with him about it because we were just friends. Then over the next couple of months we were really starting to enjoy each others company in a different light than just friends. Still not serious though, we moved very slowly into a relationship that was more serious than just friendship. To this day he still says our first date was the cocktail party :-)

He is still my best friend.

Gulp...ah...ehem...I met Frank in high school...Yes high school!!

I had gone to a local skating center with friends and was asked to skate by this fellow. Vinnie had wirey kinky italian afro thing going on and I had just gotten a poodle perm-it was 1980 for cying out loud but we musta looked like 2 bird nests on wheels.

That next week this guy asked to meet up after school. There I was introduced to his friend "Cazz". Cazz seemed nice but not my type at all. Vinnie and I were just friends so I would stop by every now and then to just say hi. Cazz was always there and the 3 uf us would chat.

Months later I found out Cazz's real name was Frank but we really didn't care for each other but I awlays stopped to talk anyway.

Frank and I were always part of the group that went to proms together, dances ect...but we never went together.

After graduation we all went to the shore and stayed a few blocks apart and thats when we began dating...June 13 1983.

We dated a few years and moved in together. We got married tax day 1988!!

He's warm, kind and funny and yes I still get butterflies when he comes home.

    Cheers!

    Happy Annniversary, Shaun!

Lowspark, he'd just gotten out of a bad relationship & had sworn off women (yeah, right!). He told me that he knew at the interview I was "trouble". So, he kept getting cold feet when it was time to meet for the date he'd asked me for. Eventually, his curiousity got the better of him & he was hooked. Anyway, that's his story!? lol But, it's OK 'cause I got even with him. We were supposed to get married & take a cruise for our honeymoon. I backed out at the last minute & we had to return our wedding presents...embarrassing. Six months later, we quietly flew to Reno & got married in the basement of the MGM Grand next to the theater playing "Death Wish" & a group of pre-schoolers on a field trip were our marriage "witnesses". I wore a black Christian Dior suit. DH has NEVER forgiven me for wearing that suit! :) I had a bad first marriage & to say that I was reluctant to try again would be an understatement.

She was a down on her luck stripper and I a business man with a big expense account...and...oh, that must have been a movie I seen.

I met my wife through a mutual friend at work. I had a beard and visited her office and she didn't look twice at me. Then I shaved and we met again and sparks flew. 19 years this June. What is the joke? If I would have killed her instead of marrying her I would be out of prison by now. Seriously, I am lucky to have found her. I would be much less of a person without her in my life.

DH belonged to the Science Fiction Club at his tertiary institution and I did at mine. Our clubs had had joint activities so we loosely knew each other by the time there was a Science Fiction Film festival being shown in one of the lecture theatres of his school. On my way there I ran over a wild cat that ran out in front of my car (it died :-( ) and I arrived in desperate need of a shoulder to cry on. His was there... together 27 years, married 25.

Mike needed a date for a Christmas party and Alison asked me if I'd be interested! I said sure, it was a blind date and the rest is history. We will be married 28 yrs. in June!

Yes, Happy Anniversary Shaun and Lou. Happy Anniversary to you too Stacy and Scott.

I met my DW at a bar. A friend owned the bar and Christy was a regular there. The owners sister was a bartender and I lived with her and her girlfriend. I used to go there and help with the bartending once in a while and my friend and her sister decided they should set Christy and me up. We used to all support the, then new, womens basketball team in New Orleans and we all went together to a game, with Christy as my date. I didn't think it would "take" because we were so different. Our 29th Anniversary was last Sunday.

My dh lived on my floor sophomore year in college. I thought he was awfully cute, but probably a really cocky athlete. He hung around my room all the time and I told my roommate to go for it because I thought he liked her. She told him he better make a move. I remember playfully chucking a cleat at him (i played soccer) and then he kissed me.
    We were such kids.

We worked together. I was married (for the 2nd time), he was divorced and raising his 3 kids.
I got divorced (unreleated issues) and a group of 'singles' co-workers went out to a bar just for something to do. We danced one dance together, I went home.
The next day, a mutual friend asked if he could give Budd my number...........we were married about 14 months later.
BEST thing that ever happened to me! 12 years in May.

I met my DH at work, he even remembers what I wore my first day - he commented to his coworker "what a nice girl" and coworker said: "um, did you happen to notice the big honkin ring on her left hand?" Yep I was engaged. So we had a great working/friend relationship for the next 6 months - he wrote software, I broke it [applications engineer].

Then one day I got disengaged, volunteered for a business trip to Aruba [really! I did acoustic emission testing on pressure vessels at the Coastal refinery on the other end o the island] to escape the emotional blackmail exfiancee was visiting upon me everyday and DH volunteered to drive me to the airport. We had lunch, he walked me to the gate and planted a big one on me >>smooch!!A year later we were married - didn't even lose the deposit on the hall ;-)

17yrs October 31st. Susie gets a refund check and a husband - I get a band wearing rubber Dick Nixon masks...

    Happy Anniversary y'all!

We met at a newspaper where I worked. I was married at the time.

Five years later we bumped into each other at a different newspaper - I had moved and changed jobs. And I was separated. He found out and nabbed me before I could get away again.

18 years of unwedded bliss and counting...

The summer before my senior year of high school I decided to pick up some college credits at the community college to cut down on costs later. I was walking to my philosophy class the first night and noticed a cute college guy following me. He followed me into class, sat next to me, and asked me to go to the movies during the break (it was a three hour long class). 6 months later, he proposed to me on Christmas Eve. (Yes, while I was still in highschool, he was a junior in college) We married the next year the weekend of Thankgiving, while we were both on break from college. We will be married for 23 years this year. Years later he told me that he really did "follow me" to class, he didn't even check the room number! Luckily we were in the same class. He also confessed that he followed me because I was "cute" and had the "best buns" he had ever seen! LOL!

Happy Anniversary Stacy & Scott & Shaun & Lou.

    What great stories!

DH was the BOC. I was a shy underclassman so I thought he was unapproachable with all the senior girls vying for his attention. Every time the cheerleaders would sell Krispy Kreme donuts on Saturday morning as a fund raiser, I would hustle to his house to sell him a dozen. We did have one date before he went away to college.

I moved away and some years later I came to town for a visit, it took me all weekend to get the courage to call him. I drove by his house; his car was there so I went a block away to use the payphone to call him. He said he was home from college, could he come see me, where was I staying. I didn't want him to know I was around the corner so I hurried to my friend's home to beat him there. We started commuting dating from one coast to another.

I met my husband at the gas station I was working at for my high school class for Distributive Education. He asked me out and I said yes. While we were talking about high school and things, he mentioned something he did with a high school buddy. At the end of his story , I said, So that's where the watermelons came from that time! I asked him if his friend's name was Doug Parker and he said yes it was, how did I know? Doug Parker is my mother's youngest brother, he and his older brother are now the sole survivors of the family. When I was about 6-8 years old my mom and the rest of the family were at our grandparents house when Doug came in with huge watermelons for everyone. When we asked where he got them, he said that a man gave them to him for his helping to fix a flat tire on the trailer hauling the melons,it was a bald face lie. He and my hubby had stolen them from a field down in Fort Meade FL. My hubby had the car, a blue light and the hat. When my uncle took off down the road with his share, my hubby waited a few minutes and then took off after him . He pulled him over (like a deputy would) and pulled the best joke on my uncle that any one had ever done.
A few days after he had told me this, my uncle came into the station where I worked. I asked him if he had been stealing any more watermelons lately. You should have seen his face!
My hubby and I have been married 34 years.

Oh, what a fun topic. The summer before my sophomore year in high school I took a canoe trip on the Allagash River in northern Maine. I was with a summer camp and met a boy. My family teased me because he was younger, this was my first boyfriend. We kept in touch after the trip over the phone and through letters. We met once at FunTown in Saco, and once at the Maine Mall. We kept in touch, but it wasn't anything horribly serious. Go ahead 2 years and I finally convinced my older half-sister and her husband that we needed to canoe the Allagash. They agreed. So I invited the boy, he would be my canoe partner. Two weeks before the trip he cancelled. I was devastated. Since we had an extra person we adjusted and I canoed with a family friend. On this trip, my half-sister had invited her half-brother from her father (does that make sense?)anyway, he brought along his friend Matt. Matt spent a great deal of his trip trying to make me laugh and talk with him. One night when the tents were particularly close, he spent the night from his tent trying to get me to tell him a story, while I "tried" to sleep in mine. We spent the last night of the 5 night 6 day trip, talking by the fire, falling asleep in camp chairs, cuddled together. Everyone with us was keeping tabs on us, but not saying anything. My poor sister was a mess. She didn't want me to be hurt by another boy, especially so soon after the last one. On the way home we exchanged mailing addresses. I wrote to him immediatly after getting home, giving him my phone number. He called 4 days later and then came to visit that night. We lived 45 minutes apart. My brother in law saw us that night, taking a walk together and told my sister. My sister called our mom, her half-brother, her step-mother and her father, just so she could find out the scoop on this Matt. It turns out he had just broken up with his girlfriend, after the canoe trip. I of course didn't find this out until months later, but I didn't care, I had the guy! We saw or talked to one another every day after that first visit. He proposed on a canoe trip on the Moose River 1.5 years ago. So finally after 9 years and 4 days we were finally married. That was this past September. OH and he was 1.5 years younger than me, so now my family jokes next time I go to the river I will find someone even younger....

Pam...one of my favourite movies is 'Falling in Love' with Merl Streep and Robert De Niro who meet on a commuter train and do just what you did! That's one movie I can watch over and over again, and I've put the theme music, "Mountain Dance" by Dave Grusin on my blog and can also listen to that over and again many times.

We've been married for 33 years. DH and I were set up on a blind date by my college roommate! I had recently broken up with a guy who'd been my steady for almost 4 years. She was "tired" of seeing me around the house and mentioned that her brother-in-law had a really nice friend (also recently out a relationship)who was tutoring her in statistics. We met for a coffee date and 3 weeks short of a year we were engaged. 5 months later following my college graduation, we were married! DH is 7 1/2 years older than me, so he'd have been "robbing the cradle" if we had met during HS!

DD has the contemporary American love story. Her DH and his friend were competing for her attention at the local Starbucks, where she was "studying" LOL! She didn't fall for his friend, but the British accent of the her DH won her over!

Alexa, this is a great thread! Congrats to Stacy & Scott and to Shaun and Lou. Hang in there Stacy, no one ever said life is easy!

Happy anniversary to Stacy and Shaun!

I have an aversion to marriage so I use our first date as an anniversary date. March 1 will be 8 years. We have been living together for 7 years. I told him he would have to prove his longeviety before I would consider marriage. Every year he asks "have I been here long enough yet?"

I got hooked on scuba diving and joined a local S FL online dive club. This cute dive instructor lived up in N FL near these fresh water springs and he was offering a free cavern class to members of the club. I was curious to see the springs so I took him up on the offer. We had our first date about 1 week after the class and he eventually had to move back to S Fl. That 5 hour drive was a killer every weekend.

I think I have you all beat on the age thing. I am 13 years older. Maybe I should change my name to Cougar. LOL I guess age doesn't really matter when you find the right person.

We worked together but didn't particularly know each other. We ended up at the same happy hour one night after work, and after way too many cocktails I sloppily slurred, "Are we gonna make out or what?" We did. We just celebrated 10 years dating, 5 years marriage.

Sharon, I remember that movie. It's the one where they somehow get each other's books? She was taking the train to visit her father in the hospital, right?

"Strangers on a Train" is another title that always comes to mind. I wish our story was so romantic. We definitley have our ups and downs.

Here's another factoid. It turns out that he was in college the same time as my ex, but a year behind, and knew him. So, he always says that we met for the second time. I can't remember him at all from college days.

Yes Pam.....But first they bumped into each other in a bookstore at Christmas and got their parcels mixed up. She was a graphic designer and commuting into town on the train and he was an architect with a car that broke down, so they met on the train and he recognized her from the book bump into scene LOL. Then they sat together the next times they comuted and she did have to go in and see her father in hospital...etc etc. He put off picking up his car after it was repaired just so he could meet her on the train. Yes it was romantic! LOL.

What a fun thread.....I particularly enjoy the stories our man friends tell!

We met at work. Both of us were recently separated and one of my colleagues was determined that Clive and I would make a great couple.

She was relentless in convincing Clive to ask me out, he wasn't so sure. Finally he capitulated but was shy and uncomfortable with approaching me.

My friend told me what she had done and said that he was going to ask me out, I freaked. You see he was mid management, at that time, and I was a newly promoted manager with a boss that had a very specific idea of what was appropriate. We did not work in the same department, only on the same floor, but I knew she would not be a happy camper if I was ever to date him. So every time I saw Clive coming my way I would duck and run the other way.

One day I didn't see him coming down the corridor and the next thing I know he was hanging over my baffle. This is the truth about the dialogue.....

Says he " I hear you are free"
Says I "I beg your pardon"
Says he " I mean that you aren't attached to anyone"
Silence on my part....I just want him to go away and it was such a bizarre opening line! LOL
Says he " I wonder if you'd go to lunch with me some day?"

I just wanted him to go away before my boss saw him talking to me....."Yes but lets not talk now here is my home phone number"...guess I could have said "no"... but he was so cute and so clutsey ; )

Then he he said....true story..."Just as long as it's not too expensive because I'm broke" LOL !!!

We went to lunch, that was 24 years ago last month.

OK, my turn. I had met a lifeguard at a lake & was dating him. Apparently word got around among the guards that it was over, and one approached me as I sat on my blanket on the beach. He offered to take me out & buy a beer for me to cry in! How romantic can you get?? But he was gorgeous--blond & a great tan, and fresh out of the Navy. 6 months later we were married & living on the GI Bill while he went to college. That was 56 years ago.

I met my wife it the summer of 79 or 80. I had been out of the air force for a couple of years and was working a variety of jobs. I remember it as the hottest summer we've ever had here. She was working a short lived job at a trucking company as a clerk and I was doing electrical work on a new building for them. She would get after me about costs and how long it was taking and I don't remember how it actually happened but she came over for dinner one night and we stayed together for over 27 years. I remember I cooked something with pork and pineapple that was never asked for or wanted again.

I met my first husband in a bar. His family owned it and my Dad was the bouncer, so I went to talk to him and the ex was working the bar. 30 years worth of drinking and chasing waitresses and we finally split. I still seldom set foot in a bar and almost never drink, it does not bring back good memories.

Elery and I met on-line. My boss "bullied" me into signing up for e-Harmony after I lost the WonderWeiner, she was worried about me. She assured me that I would never have to date anyone, not even meet them, but I could talk to people all over the world and it would keep me occupied. I was only "matched" with three guys from Michigan, and one was Elery. It took him a long time to talk me into meeting him in person and he says he would have proposed on our first date. He did propose a few months later, I turned him down. He proposed again, I turned him down. The third time he proposed I accepted, but told him he was on probation for a year. My theory was that no one can really be an a$$hole and hide it for a year, it'll come through before that. We got married in May and so far, he's still a really nice guy, LOL.

I gotta admit, though, every now and then when he's on his second glass of wine, I wince. It's unreasonable, I know, but I think I'm always going to be afraid of that.

I met my DH in a bar - a friend of a friend of a friend. I went home that night and turned the radio on to an oldies station while I was getting ready for bed. The first song they played was "Today I Met The Boy I'm Going To Marry" by Darlene Love. She was always one of my favorite singers and I took note of the song because I had never heard it on that station before.

He called me three days later and invited me out for dinner. We had a nice time but no sparks flew. When I came home, I turned on the radio and guess what song was playing again? I sat right up in bed and figured I'd better take a closer look at this guy. I had enough years of watching The Twilight Zone when I was growing up to realize my radio was trying to tell me something and I'd better listen to it. I did.

WeÂve been together for 34 years since then.

annie1992, I'm glad that through this post I finally got to hear about Elery. He's referenced in your posts, and in people's posts to you, but I was never sure if he was a DH or a dear friend (sounds like both!) As a relative newcomer, this post has helped me "get to know" the people I've connected with.

BTW, the reason I was tuned in to the posts with Elery mentioned is because it's a name I had suggested to my DD, who is expecting next week, before we knew she was having a girl. Great name - sounds like a great guy!

This has been a wonderful thread to read - so many neat was to meet the "right" one! That said, I am feeling the need to elaborate on jsut how I met my DH.... I was out for Happy Hour with some friends and there was a pool table in the little beer & BBQ place we were hanging. The place was packed and this guy came in and put quarters on the table, and being the "Julie the Cruise Director" type I went over and explained we use the chalk board, not quarters on the table.

My partner ended up leaving and DH came over and asked me to shoot with him (I was pretty good, for a girl LOL!). We ended up holding the table for hours and at the end of the night, he asked me what I was doing the following night. I was going to the same BBQ place to watch a Pay per View boxing match and asked him if he wanted to come with me. He loved the idea and we met there the following night.

After a bit, he got up from sitting next to me at the bar and went to shoot pool. The lady sitting next to me said "You two are such a cute couple, how long have you been married?"

I almost fell off my barstool and explained that we had jsut met and this was our first date. She gave me her business card and asked that I send her a wedding announcement when it finally happened.

A year later we were married, I sent her an invite and though she declined, she sent a lovely note that I still have in my memory book.

That was 12 years ago this May and I haven't regretted the decision for a single minute!

amck, all my friends here "dated" Elery right along with me. I posted pictures of our first meeting at Meijer Gardens in Grand Rapids, later pictures of him riding my horse the first time I took him to the farm, more pictures of him driving the backhoe and manure spreader at Dad's direction, LOL. I posted more pictures when he bought me the food processor for my birthday, only about a month after we started dating, I nearly sent that back.

There was a whole 'nother thread and set of pictures when he proposed to me the third time. We were on the deck of a restored sailing schooner on Grand Traverse Bay when he talked the captain into letting me steer the boat, then got down on one knee and proposed in front of everyone. I was so embarrassed I said yes immediately. I told him I should have said "I hope you can return that ring". He said I should have because then he could have gotten free "sympathy drinks" all night and talked me into it later!

My wedding pictures were posted here, we got married outside at a local inn and no one was there except us, my kids and grandkids, my parents and my boss who is also one of my best friends.

last fall there were pictures of our "reception", some of the members here attended that too. It's been a forum romance/wedding/marriage all the way through, and you could probably still find some of the threads on the gallery.

And yes, he's a great guy and I'm dam*ed lucky to have found him. It only took me 52 years to find a man who truly believes that I am Empress of the Universe. I think I'll keep him.

And those of us that were unable to attend all of those special events last year, sat anxiously at our computers toasting the new bride and groom as we awaited those pictures and details of the wedding, reception and even the honeymoon!!! It was so much fun sharing Elery and Annie's life.

LOL, dlynn, I knew everyone here "attended", at least in spirit. Even though only my parents, children and grandchildren attended in person, Ashley and Amanda each carried white handkerchiefs from Tenerife, my symbol of all my friends here on the forum. That wedding was a lot better attended than it appeared!

I've been reading and enjoying all the stories...
If you all want to hear one more, here goes.

Husband #1... at school. Short marriage, too young. Nice guy. Shouldn't have done it.

Husband #2... in Bora Bora. Does a beach bar count as a bar? If so, then yes, we sort of met at a bar. But we were introduced by mutual friends (yes, we both ended up knowing and visiting the same friends in Tahiti) and it turns out that he worked about 4 blocks away from where I lived in L.A. Long story short, but that ended as well.

Husband #3... a harbor seal introduced us. A friend of mine, who owns a kayaking company, was taking out a group of novice paddlers. He needed help with the group, so I agreed to go along. DH, who I had never met before, but lived only 5 blocks away from me, also agreed to help out on the adventure. Well, it was a very tough trip. Lots of mishaps with paddlers who had no business being out on the open ocean, but when we finally all came to a spot to rest, a harbor seal climbed onto DH's kayak! It was the strangest sight. We got to talking. I couldn't even see DH's face behind his beard, sunglasses and hat.

I was ending a not-so-good relationship and so was he, so I kept sidestepping his offers for a date, but would only go kayaking with him. Eventually, he sort of tricked me into going on a first date. A month later, he was proposing, and 4 months after that we were married. We just celebrated our 10 year anniversary. And our son has been kayaking since he was less than a year old.

This is it. Third time is a charm.
