Recessed Medicine Cabinet Question

Okay - I've been out looking for medicine cabinets. Does such a recessed beast exist that the mirror sits flush to the wall versus having 1/2 - 1" of the 'guts' exposed? I've been to HD and Lowes.

If I'm trying to find something that doesn't exist I'll just get wall mirrors, but I figured I'd ask those that have gone before if they have seen anything like what I want. Two recessed mirrors (each about 26hx20w) over a double vanity in a guest bath. The vanity is black and the fixtures will be chrome - so I'd like either black frames or frameless.

Can anyone help?

Robern makes them in a few different "price points" and in a bunch of different sizes. I'm not sure how much, if any of it sticks out/is exposed (ours isn't installed yet), but check out their site and maybe call them to inquire.

Thanks so much - I checked their website and even their cabinets 'project' according to their spec sheets. Rats.

Well, first of all, studs are about 1-1/2" wide these days, so that means the stud bay width with studs 16" on center is about 14-1/2". Having said that, if you have the skill to remove some material from either or both sides, you don't need to worry about weakening the studs. However, I suggest you leave this task to a handyman or carpenter since -- no insult intended -- I suspect you don't have the right tools or skill set.

Thanks…and yes, a cabinet can be custom built but I’m guessing the cost wouldn’t be much different than a Robern cabinet. I was hoping someone knows of another manufacturer…

You can build your own. Just frame in a box with some nice sides and shelves and have a glass place put hinges on mirrors of your choice.

Some of the cabinet has to stick out unless the door is not any wider than the cabinet itself (in other words the hinges sit visibly beyond the door. Otherwise there's no place for the edge of the door to go when you open it.

I have Robern cabinets. They can't be flush against the wall, or you'd have no way to open the door. It's not much, maybe 1/2".

The box on a recessed cabinet with an inset door sets entirely inside the wall with the door and its frame flush against the wall.

I think this is what you're describing. I Installed the large size and am very happy with it. It's very well made and I expect it to last a very long time.

We have this in two of our bathrooms, and it is flushity-flush. The door that opens sits outside the wall, but over course it has to.

It is the third RH one posted, so maybe they are the only ones that make what you are looking for.

not sure what you mean by "guts exposed" - my nutone metro deluxe has about 1" sticking out, but it's only the door. the cabinet itself is fully flush to the wall.

i also ran across this one in my searches. don't know any more than what this web site says, but it says the door only protrudes 1/4" from the wall. don't think you'll get any closer than that, if that's what you're looking for
