I have a hole: the saga of the recessed medicine cabinet

I bought a recessed medicine cabinet at a Restore for $16.00. I knew with some love and a new door, it could be the perfect addition to my lackluster bathroom. Without measuring, it looked like it would fit perfectly between the studs. I ordered a door, bought the hardware, and painted it. I also measured the distance between the studs using a stud finder and as luck would have it, I thought it would slide right in. After cutting the hole in the drywall, IT DOESN’T FIT!! The width of the cabinet is 15”, and the studs are 16” center to center. In theory, it should fit, right? The hole is about 1/4” too small. Now what? Is there anything I can do to make it fit? Can I trim down the studs 1/8” on each side, or will that weaken them too much to support a medicine cabinet? I spent a considerable amount of time and emotional energy so darn proud of this cabinet, and to think of scrapping it now makes me crazy! Any help would be great.
