Question about Revo Uninstaller

When I right click on a program to uninstall it, a box come up with 4 choices or modes, from basic to safe to moderate to advanced. And I don't know which I should choose. I don't know if using moderate or advanced is tampering to much with the registry, since I don't know anything about the registry, or if I can just trust Revo to know what it is doing. Which should I choose?????

Built-in uninstall mode - run only the application's uninstaller without any additional scanning

->Safe uninstall mode - includes the Built-in mode and performs additional scans in the Registry and on the hard drive to find leftover items that are safe to delete. This is the fastest mode.

->Moderate uninstall mode - includes the Safe mode and performs an extended scan to find all of the application's leftover information in the most common places of the Registry and on the hard drive

->Advanced uninstall mode - includes the Moderate mode and performs a deep and thorough scan to find all of the application's leftover information in the Registry and on the hard drive. This is the slowest mode.

Looks like you would be safe with advanced mode

To avoid the chance of being infected while you swap anti virus programs is very easy to accomplish. Decide which program you want and download it, saving it to a folder. I keep a folder called Utilities where all this stuff goes. Then you disconnect the internet connection, go to Add/Remove programs and remove the current anti virus. Now install the new program and set it to run. I expect a reboot might be necessary but it will tell you. Once you have the new anti virus running connect to the internet again and immediately go to the web site to update to the latest anti virus definitions. Regarding your fear of removing anything other than the anti virus program, that will not happen because your anti virus program will be set up in it's own folder. If you have AVG now and also AVG anti malware, then yes, they are in the same folder but if there are any shared files there (doubtful) you will be asked if you want to remove or keep that particular file. If you want to view your folders at any time just right click on the Start button then click Explore. Now you have a split screen. Click on anything in the left side and the contents of that folder appear in the right side. Click any plus signs on the left side to cause all the sub folders to drop down under the highlighted folder.

Good news. I am glad for you. It is rare but on occasion REVO does miss somethings. Now if you have CCleaner, this is the only time that I recommend running its Registry utility. Run it and review the report. Check only entries directly recognizable to Office and fix them. When afforded the option of backing up before fixing select yes and continue on. Again, ONLY THE DIRECTLY RECOGNIZABLE ENTRIES. No guessing. Over all, in the future I think you will be only using REVO to uninstall. DA

REVO is a fine application, but let's slow the train down just a bit for a first time user. No application is 100%. For best results use REVO in the Advanced Mode. It will first create a Windows restore point. Then it will run the target application's on-board uninstaller. This will be followed by a REVO scan of the system for orphan files. This scan will be presented to the user in a report with options to delete or not. I have always selected and deleted everything without a concern. Finally, REVO will scan the registry for orphan entries. Again a report will be presented to the user with the option to delete or not. This is were it gets a little tricky as I have seen on rare occasion entries reported in error. Either ignore the report and move past, or be absolutely certain the entries you select are for the target application. No guessing is allowed here. Please be aware that quite often the scan of the system and/or registry will come up clean. If you have CCleaner installed on your system this is one of a few times I suggest running its registry tool for anything missed. Again, no guessing and be sure to use the backup offering. The START>Search suggestion is a good one too for a final clean up. DA

Java Problems - can't access, can't uninstall

When I go to that page, it does not list my system information. So I clicked each additional suggestion. No luck. Specifics are: The Firefox plugin is enabled. Nothing happens when I try to open the Java panel. It won't open. The instructions for clearing the cache do not seem right. When I go to the Edit button, I do not have a + or option to expand. So I could not do that one. I did try to find it through tools - options - advanced - network. It says I have no cache being stored for on or offline (I had just run ccleaner before =- so that cleared the cache, I think). I still selected clear now - but I couldn't tell if anything happened. So all the options either showed no problem =- or I couldn't not execute them. Any pointers would be great. Thanks. Lynn.

I've been using it on the most advanced mode.. no problems yet. It just uninstalled corel/psp12 which is a biggie.

Advanced Mode is the way to go. The decision to remove any detected orphan registry entries is reported with the option to delete or not. When in doubt don't.

Thank you all for answering. Sorry it took so long for me to get back to you. I feel better now about making my choice. Sometimes one just needs a little reassuring backup from those who really know!
