I've run into this too and never understood it. I just go ahead and uninstall. Nothing terrible ever happened and I've done it a few times over the years on my 3 machines.

Maybe someone else can give you a better explanation, but I just uninstall.

Once I have made the decision to un-install anything I take it all out including personal settings if asked about those. For myself I like to re-start a program squeaky clean.

The last paragraph in the notice above is good really, it is suggesting an alternative which likely will work. However I feel removing the program and re-installing might get rid of the corrupt or offending file/s

What you are referring to here is just a restore capablity that is available following a scan and item(s) removal. Go ahead and delete S&B and do a clean install. Be sure to do a search using the word Spybot for any orphan files so you can remove them before the ionstall.

I personally do a reboot between the uninstall and the reinstall of any applications configured to the O/S. Some applications require this on there own others don't. It doesn't hurt anything.

I absolutely agree with Owbist, a clean install is superior to an overwrite.
