Thanks owbist. Very interesting.
I like the tile for settings and the power button on the screen as I do still use my mouse occasionally.

Windows 8.1.1:
Ran a simple manual update and just kept at it through a few cycles of Downloads/Restarts/Check For Updates) in Control Panel (System and Security) and it eventually sorted itself out.
Total of eleven items so far for April 8.
Auto update will take care of all of it anyway, if selected.
Slightly slower page loading now but it may not be the cause.

Gorgeous flowers Sandlapper/Jeanne! I especially like the purple one. I want to say thanks to my pal, Pastvast/Stephanie! I received a package over the weekend with some really cool surprises! First, Trilliums. Love them! I've really been needing to expand my shade garden beyond the basics and these give me a good start. And second, Skittles. Love them also! I've almost eaten all of them already, I just can't keep my hand out of that bag. Perfect timing too, I just ran out of 3 Musketeers minis so now I've got something new to snack on. And last but not least, Stephanie sent one of her wonderful letters. I really enjoy them and the updates on your life. And you have to keep me updated on that bundle of joy you're expecting! I have no kids myself, really don't want any, but I like to hear about and spoil everyone else's! Thanks again, Stephanie. Both Sandlapper/Jeanne and Pastvast/Stephanie, I want to apologize for being such an e-mail flake lately. I've been so swamped with home projects that I'm not getting much else done. And the last 2 weeks have been especially bad with replacing the deck. But the deck is almost finished (Yeah!) so you'll both be hearing from me soon. :-)

Hello ladies and...too bad no gents here. I don't remember. DID we ever have any gentlemen sign up for our bigger group? Anyway...I DO DIgress, eh? UPDATE: Carrie Ann, I received your package today. Thank you for the yummy smelling vanilla bean simmering waffle bar. I like the smell of vanilla VERY much. Thank you also for the very pretty wind chimes. Pink with silver etching--just beautiful. I didn't put them out today after school, though, as the wind was reeealy blowing, and I was afraid something would happen to them. I will see what tomorrow holds. I googled the brodiaea Queen Fabiola bulbs that you sent. I was really clueless.(what's new sometimes) They look like my favorite color of blue!!! THANK you! I esPECially loved your letter. So newsy and sweet. Plus a nice selection of seeds to divide between our friends. Beth, your seeds are here, too, along with a number of fulfilled wishes. I want to thank you for the darling little soft brown puppy with the dark brown ears and wearing BUNNY EARS! It is so darn cute! Poor thing is trying to lug around this clear carrot filled with jelly bean eggs. Patty, I forgot to thank you for the seeds that you sent to me-tall green nicotiana and milk chocolate foxglove. I am absolutely THRILLED!!! As I have said to the rest of you, I think you will also be happy when you see what seeds you will be getting, too. Since this thread is so close to 100, I believe I will be starting back at 1 sometime this evening. Good afternoon, almost evening! It was a little cool and windy here today, with rain early this morning. Everything is glistening and green. So pretty. I had my first official workout today. I managed to do all the machines twice and lightly jogged in place after every 2 machines. I have to admit that I had to pop some tylenol and take a nap late this afternoon because I did feel the burn and was achy and tired. But, it was fun, and I'll definitely return tomorrow for a light workout. Hubby has a sleep study tonight way over in Houston, so I'll be on my own here tonight. I haven't spent many nights here alone, and it's been since Thanksgiving so I'm a little nervous. These lovely woods start feeling very dark and lonely when it's just Lucky pup and me. QOD: I think I'd like to return as Sweetpea because that little one leads a beautiful life on Suzanne's farm! Jen, so glad to see you posting and that y'all were safe even though you were frightened. BJ, reading about your windows getting washed made me look hard at mine, and I know that I'll be getting around to them sometime very soon. I hadn't realized how rain-spotted they'd gotten until I really looked. McPeg, that washstand has such good bare bones. Can't wait to see the finished product! I'm happy for you to be getting new furniture! This weekend, we're getting a new propane tank for our grill, and I'm thawing out chicken and steaks to rub down and grill for next week's meals. There's just nothing better than grilled meat - and I love the smell of it cooking on the grill. Hope everyone has a restful weekend!

I don't think she was considering upgrading her current pc to a newer version of windows but updating by getting a new pc with a newer OS. I would not recommend trying to put one of the newer versions of windows on a very old pc it would have to be checked for compatibility before hand and likely would have a lot of things that would need to be changed and updated if it would work at all. laat2, are you talking about Security Center (Firewall, Automatic Updates, and Virus Protection)? It is confusing to me. I really don't want to have to buy another computer or pay for some fix. What do I need to do? Thanks.

No fear, mon.
If machine are set for Auto Updates you're "Good to go".

Simple way to check what be happening:
Put cursor into upper right corner to the right of the "X" then bring it down a bit until "search" charm pops up.
Click on "search".
Type "control panel" in the blank and then click on the first Control Panel (it is Blue) in the list that shows up underneath it.
Click on "System and Security".
Then look for "Windows Update" header and then locate and click "View Update History".

A list of the latest updates installed today from the newest on top, down to ancient history will appear.

Neat!

You can also click the "Settings " charm, then click the "Change PC Settings", then "Update and Recovery", then "Update History".
The list is bigger format and quite unwieldy but perhaps useful in some cases.

Started the update on a Sony Win8.1 Pro laptop this morning. The download window says it's 913 MB; it's still not completely downloaded and installed as I write this.

The update wasn't available for Lenovo and Asus laptops I have that are already running Win 8.1

Well, I'm behind everyone else. I have a Dell computer with a seperate monitor (no laptop, tablet, or any of those newer electronic devices). Windows XP Media Center Edition, Version 2002 Service Pack 3.

I have no idea what laat2 means by "Put cursor into upper right corner to the right of the "X" then bring it down a bit until "search" charm pops up".

If I put my mouse anywhere near the X at the upper right hand corner and click, it closes my window.

Does this mean that my antivirus program won't pick up any of the newest viruses, etc?

donnas ... Virus program you might want to make sure the program itself is upgraded to latest version. And then keep the virus definitions updated daily.. should be ok for a while.. how long of a while would be strictly a wild guess.
edit; Here is a list of anti-virus programs and their estimated end of life dates with xp .. at MajorGeeks site

Personally if I had an XP computer, I don't think I would feel comfortable with online banking or bill paying or anything that might affect monies in the future.

hald ... you can manually download and install 8.1-update1. Might save you from downloading it twice,,, once on each computer. See the link below.
You need to make sure you have KB2919442 installed first.. before installing the about 700mb KB2919355, after that's installed run windows update again and it will offer about a 200mb custom version of the 355 to finish it off with all the other kb's built in it.

donnas, she is speaking of operating system Windows 8.1, it has nothing to do with xp or your machine.
