My Email

I have Windows XP Pro, but am not a computer pro by any means. Use Outlook Express for Email. I keep the messages as long as I can so that I can refer to them as I desire. Often when closing OE, the computer will ask if I want to compact to save space. No problem in the past. Today it deleted all April messages, the most recent ones, and they are not to be found in any folder I checked. Certainly not in the Deleted folder. Unhappy is a mild word for my present state of mind. Please tell me what to do now.

Look in your Recycle bin.

OK, I did find them in the Recycle Bin. I right clicked for the drop-down, then left clicked on the "Restore". They disappeared from the Recycle Bin, but have not appeared again anywhere. I even restarted the computer with no results. Any other suggestions?

hi joan... you need to click on "Your Profile" at the very top of the page in the green banner, next to where it says "Welcome". but like anettacm posted, it's gone in your second post. i also had a weird thing happen like this on one thread where it had "person_id:nnnnn" show up in that same spot. i emailed gardenweb, but never heard back. and it's still showing up like that, i just checked. gremlins...

Please, please, please never use any link sent in an email to input a password. It's a huge issue. Never. Once thieves get a password they will work the variations to try to get into all your stuff. On my blog I have something like 650 attempts to log in by hackers. You'd think they have better things to do but they don't. They just steal. To change a password always go directly into the account from you main device. If someone is trying to hack you, the best defense is a really long password. I often save tracking numbers from shipping purchases and use those as they are long and nonsense strings Of course, if you do that it needs to be accurately saved someplace secure. I have an old school paper password book. I love those IRS and calls from "Apple" and "Microsoft" that tell me there's something wrong and they can fix it. I am so rude and scream so loud at them that they usually hang up. They don't call back.

Lots of ways to do it.. . you don't really say why or how you use 2nd account so someone could try to give a more specific answer. You can always use a web browser to login to any yahoo email account https://mail.yahoo.com If you don't have a separate app installed for the 2nd yahoo email, I don't think yahoo has a way to send notifications. Of course - a single yahoo account can merge one other yahoo into the one account and receive mail from both. Then you have just the one password to see both account emails. All yahoo email accounts have the ability to have alias accounts, easily setup under the online security settings. Probably could install a generic email app. Configure it to do your 2nd email account - Perhaps look at; http://blog.en.uptodown.com/blue-mail-universal-email-manager-android/ You could set up an account on gmail or one of the other popular email providers and have it fetch your 2nd yahoo email or set the 2nd yahoo to forward to it.

Before compacting messsages go to > File > Work offline > then compact.

I have been unable to retrieve the messages. Compacting is apparently optional, I probably will not do it anymore. How will going offline affect the process or the results?

Bus driver take a look at the link I provided below. Ignore the first response probably but do read the second and third replies.

You might also read the first response afterwards as he/she rants on about saving emails in OE rather than using a backup frequently. But get your problem cured before worrying about that methinks.

My inexperience may be to blame, but the emails have not been recovered. Now the thing asks if it should "compact" every time I close Outlook Express and I click "cancel". No way am I ever going to compact the messages again, even if I have to buy several 500 gig hard drives. How do I get it to stop asking?

I dont think you can permanently disable it.

You can go into the registry and reset the counter to Zero, but then after 100 openings of OE it will compact again.
