Thanks Owbist. I have Norton 2007 and below are what I assume were installed, according to Belarc. I keep the definitions up to date- I'm not sure it is done automatically like it was with Norton 2004. It seems to check incoming email because once in a while a notice will let me know that something was deleted because it had a virus. A full scan is done once a week and I occasionally scan individual things that might be suspect. So far, the weekly scan has caught a tracking cookie or two. I also use ad-aware. I will do the online scans and see what they come up with. One thing I don't understand is why the files showed up in the recycle bin in the first place. Something must have told them to go there. After I do some investigating, I will let you know what happens. Thanks, again. *.bak are 'backup' files. Some word processors makes a backup copy of the starting file at the beginning of an edit session, and rewrites that file each time a 'save' is executed. Should the computer crash during an editing session, the word processor may be able to take up where it left off, after the computer is restarterd, by using the *.bak files(s). After an edit job is finished and the file closed, often the .bak files are deleted. Also, from the old DOS days, the .bak was a favorite file extension used by file backup software. Often, it was a 'file set' in compressed format, where a group of files had been cocantanated into one file and compressed.

Had to google cheanmgr -sagerun101 to find out what that is and I ended up at my start, all programs, accessories, system tools, disk cleanup. I read all the descriptions and clicked OK and when it was done, I restarted my computer and tried to send something to the recycle bin.
