Long Post About An Old Problem

After all this time, I really don't believe that I'll ever find an answer to this problem but .. I still have hope 8-)

After having worked on my XP pro for six months, trying to get the messed up display colors corrected, (after a driver update) I gave up and took it to the Firedog Techs at Circuit City. (Oy vey)(No jokes please)

The techs put in a new video card, (GeForce 8500GT) upgraded the PSU, (Antec 500 watt) and then After "Three Months" of trying different ideas .. They gave up too.

This was about a year ago.

The display colors were washed out.

The reds and blues were basically gone with just washed out greens and yellows left.

I brought the pc home and stuck it in a corner.

Here's the kicker: After sitting in a corner for almost a year, I decided to take the new Antec 500 watt psu out of it and put it in my NEW PC that had only a basic 400 watt psu in it.

Took the 400 watter from the new pc and put it into the XP along with the XP'S old graphics card.

I removed the CMOS battery to reset the bios and then did a destructive restore on the thing.

The colors on the display, (after restoring the drivers) .. were perfect!?

Now here's my New Problem: For about three days the colors had been perfect.

Today the little lady turns it on and the colors had reverted back to the washed-out look.

Even the boot screen is washed out when this happens.

(Instead of white letters they appear as a washed out grey-green).

Funny thing though .. After my wife had been playing her solitaire games for about 10 or 15 minutes, the colors flashed back to life.

She's been on it for almost two hours now with no problems.

Sometimes the thing will boot up with perfect colors, sometimes it wont.

Sometimes the colors will stay perfect all day, sometimes they wont.

Sometimes the colors will wash out and then come back and sometimes not even re-booting will bring the colors back.

It's not a cable or connection and it isn't a monitor problem either.

I just can't figure out What is going on.

I'd guess something on the mainboard has a bad component or connection,, or lots of ants left some honeydew that needs to be cleaned off between the circuits as the humidiy & temps seem to effect that stuffs resistance values. Don't ask how I know that ;)

Thanks mikie,

Someone suggested that an overheating capacitor on the MoBo could be the problem but I just don't see how?

The techs at Circuit City ran all kinds of test on the thing .. (Three months worth) and didn't find a hardware problem.

And today, I have had the thing on for 14 hours with no problems.

Hi scottspond, some how didn't think she would, Florida vs Manchester, no contest really ;-) The area I live in is New Mills, in High Peak in Derbyhsire. If it doesn't ring a bell, it's just past Lyme park, Buxton is about 2 miles away, Stockport 9 miles and Manchester 20 miles (all via road) Handily the railway station is about 5 mins away from my home, so trips to Manchester are pleasent through the countyside and don't require I use the car ;-) And in summer I get to hop on the odd steam trian, every boys dream. My Mancunian mates reckon I've gone "all posh" living here, as I was born and grew up in Fallowfield and went to school in Rusholme. Regards ChrisC.

Try to make note of when and where it happens. Time of day, circumstances, physical properties of the space where they blow up, anything can be helpful to your trainer. With my Casey, he initially went after Bina mostly in tight spaces. Later, he was usually guarding the room and did not want her to enter the family room or the space around me. Once you figure it out, you can watch for it and distract the dog before it happens. We used to yell with lots of Whoop! Whoop! loud noises to startle Casey out of his fixated trance, then get his attention on us, not Bina. But Casey had a brain tumor and we were fighting against whatever damage it was doing to his brain. Your situation may be completely different, so that is why you need an expert to help you figure out what is happening. We finally decided not to leave any chew toys out at all, since Casey could decide to guard them at any time, for instance. Things changed over the course of the three years he had his tumor. Toward the end, he could not follow his training and control his impulses. He was all ID, a psychologist would say. If he wanted to know what was on the counter, he jumped up and looked. If he wanted to eat something on a counter, he jumped up and took it. We had gates everywhere and had to be perfect about using them and leaving things in his reach. I have known others who had two dogs who were incompatible and could not be together. They managed the gates in their home to keep the dogs apart. They also arranged their lives to spend time in the spaces of both dogs, so neither was neglected. It can be done, but it is difficult! First, save your money, and find that trainer to come to your house and work with the dogs and figure out what the problem is.

I cannot give you a direct answer, but I can tell you some of my experience. I have a strong preference for very flat finishes and so I gravitate to the Estate Emulsion. However, in my laundry room, which has many walls and a weird sort of dog leg shape, one area has Modern Emulsion in Teresa's Green, a much clearer color than Pigeon. ME has 2% sheen level. That's pretty low. Honestly, I do not notice the shine at all, unless I really look for it and the lighting is just so. Unfortunately, I have no Ben Moore, so cannot compare. What I can tell you, though, is that DH has done a lot of painting in his day and the first time he hefted a can of F&B he was amazed at how heavy it was. All that clay and pigment is heavy stuff; I fail to see how that could fail to affect your perception of the color. I have Estate Emulsion in Red Earth and Blue Ground elsewhere. The color seems to come off the walls and envelop me in the rooms. I love this stuff. However, I recently discovered, after two years, that the Red Earth isn't scrubbable, unlike the other colors in Estate Emulsion. Go figure. I'm not fond of the texture of our walls (too heavy and really soaks up the paint). F&B definitely mellows out our texture, a phenomenon that contributes to the depth of the coloration. Frankly, were I in your situation, I would buy a quart of the real deal and do a head to head head comparison with the Ben Moore version on a wall. I don't know what your wall texture and light are like. As an aside, I have EE Radicchio on a wall in a game room "kitchenette" and it appears shinier than usual. I don't know if that's because of how dark it is or because of the light in there, but that's been a disappointment to me. I must say, your photos of Pigeon look like I would expect Pigeon to look, but that a very vague statement.

Be aware that if this turns out to be something on the motherboard and you elect to replace the motherboard it will also cost you an operating system because the current XP is tied to that specific motherboard.

As Someone suggested that an overheating capacitor on the MoBo could be the problem you might study the capacitors etc with a magnifying glass looking for discolouration or slight bulging, you never know.

Since everything else has been checked the cap problem makes sense,

The more sporadic and random that the symptoms occur is usually a good sign of bad caps. You can usually spot a bad cap they start to bulge and may leak a gooey residue.
