Building a Home

Show me your built-in entertainment centers and shelves PLEASE!!

We are figuring out what to do with the cabinets and built-ins so the electrician knows where to put everything. I don't know what to do with the built-in entertainment/media cabinets etc. It will be roughly 9' wide of space. There will be a tv in the middle and shelves or something on the sides.

Please show me what you have done!

I just posted this over on the "beam" thread but here's our built ins. The TV goes on the right. The only other different thing we did was a black mesh screen on the bottom middle cabinet. This is where the subwoofer goes for the surround sound.

Joann: Thank you for the design and all of the example pics. You and your DH are really very talented. Did either or you ever do this work professionally or is it a hobby? Thank you for highlighting all of the architectural details. That is exactly what I need to see. DH and I were debating about this glass as the side panels are quite narrow so your pics are very helpful to visualize the whole effect. I should mention here that this is not a fully custom shop. We basically get to pick different door/cabinet styles, wood species/stain/hardware, height/width, drawers and component configuration so I may not be able to order some of the lovely design details you incorporated, though I will bring in the pics and inquire about it on Sat. I did notice the bottom doors on the console are not full overly which it looks like you designed for the sides. I'm going to guess my top option will not be full overlay so we'll see. Also, my hinges are not the euro style on bottom and stick out the sides. Wouldn't they need to match? As the TV is 50" wide, I was thinking of having the center opening be 51". Then in the vertical direction with the TV height at 31" I was thinking we should add a bit of beathing room--say about 3" extra on top so the TV box would then be 51"W x 34"H. I think I'll check the TV specs to see any ventillation requirements, though I know DH wants some holes in the back for cables, etc. I notice hoosiergirl's TV is very tightly set into the built-in. I'll let you know what they come up with when we go in over the weekend.

I don't know if this will help. This is what we are doing. On Left: There will be an under counter refrigerator for beverages. Next to the fridge is a wine rack. Behind the "appliance garage" we will keep our opened wine du jour that doesn't need refrigeration, ice bucket, and other alcoholic drink accessories. Above behind glass doors will be stem ware and other drinking glasses. On Right: There will be an expresso/latte maker behind the appliance garage as well as coffee, scoop, etc. Above behind glass doors will be coffee mugs, expresso cups, tea cups, tea pots, etc. In the bank of drawers will be snacks. Between the cabinets is a garden sink to be used as an extra prep sink as well as beverage center sink. We garden a lot, so this 4' wide sink with console legs is very useful, especially since this beverage center/garden sink area is at the far end of our mudroom just outside the main kitchen. Above the sink are open shelves for pretty things, and useful things.

We are doing a piece that looks similar, but it is a stand alone (hutch/pantry/buffet), so we will have hutch ends connecting the uppers & lowers. It will be 6' long, and have beadboard paneling like yours. We are doing standard depth uppers & lowers (12"/24"). We're doing shallow top drawers like you, but beneath that we will have doors that house shallow pull outs on the top, and deeper pullouts on the bottom. We decided all drawers weren't the best solution in this case, as we'll have some standing canned goods in the shallow pull outs & taller standing items in the deeper pull outs, like soda bottles for entertaining, tall bottles of veg oil, vinegar, etc. Don't know if your "wine & refreshments" are going in the uppers or lowers or both, but just make sure everything will fit the way you want it to if you go with all drawers.

Thanks for all of the help -- while all of these are great, sweeby and ging9, your style is really what I am trying to find -- where top cabs come down to counter top. I would love to someday just reach in and get the dishes and plates I need rather than only being able to reach what is in the first shelf most of the time! DH is concerned about loss of counter space in front, but I love the idea that this configuration keeps that section of the counter "clutter free" by design. We tend to live by piles and I am trying desperately in this new design to avoid the tendency for that by having designated areas for mail, homework, etc. that does not include all of the counter space in the kitchen!

Oh, tell me more about the black mesh. We plan on putting in surround sound for the great room and I wasn't for sure how the subwoofer would work.

I don't know a whole lot about the black mesh since the cabinet guy suggested it and installed it. I'm not sure where he got it?? I only wanted it on one side for the subwoofer but then everyone convinced me it would look out of balance so we did it on the other side too. From a distance it just looks black but up close, you can see through it a bit. He said we could always get another cabinet front later if we decided we didn't want the mesh.

This is only the 2nd photo I've seen of your home (the other was your gorgeous master bath/travertine.... oh, and it seems you were the one with the huge beautiful island that at first you thought was too dark... was that you?).

Oh my word, girlfriend, this is just beautiful! I love your fireplace, and your cool beams. Your built ins are just lovely. Your house is beautiful. Have you linked us to more photos in an album somewhere? I want to see more! ;o)

Sorry Meagan, didn't mean to hijack your thread. I wish I had photos for you..... but mine is just a distant dream. I'm not sure when we'll get to the built-ins stage.... it will be a while.

Hey Lindybarts-Where are you planning on putting the other speakers for the surround sound? In the shelves somewhere?

Totally, you're so sweet! I plan to have photos this weekend since our walk through is tomorrow. I'm so excited to finally get to this point. It feels like it took forever.

meagan, we're putting the smaller front speakers up on top of the built in and mounting the rear ones to the wall up high. It's not a perfect set up, it's all of our old stuff but it'll be fine for downstairs. The Bonus room upstairs is going to be a theatre room with all the new equipment.
