Show Me Your Beverage Center

Hi,

We are planning a beverage center in our kitchen remodel and the beverage center will be placed between the fridge and a pantry cabinets (symetrical look) with built in mw. We would like the beverage center to have a furniture / hutch look and we were wondering whether the upper and lower cabinets should be the same depth or standard 12" uppers and 24" lower cabinets.

We plan to use the beverage center for wine & refreshments when entertaining as well as daily use for coffee / tea, making smoothies in a blender, and also vitamin storage. I am hoping that by moving these tasks out of my primary working area of the kitchen, it will keep us out of each others way (family of 4 - 2 parents / 2 girls ages 8 and 10)

Questions:

1) Can you show me your beverage center or built in hutch?

2) Do you think the upper and lower cabinets should be the same depth? 3)Should the beverage center be recessed back a bit from the fridge and pantry?

4) Do you think fridge water and ice will suffice for beverage center (prep sink would take away from hutch / furniture look we want to achieve)

Also wanted to mention that the kitchen layout has an island between the sink wall and fridge wall, with seating

We have something similar (and smaller) to what you desire. I love everything easily accessible at the point of use. The MW is not built-in. It sits on an adjustable shelf that needed adjusting when the MW was replaced recently. Scroll down to see the beverage center as well as notation of what is in each cabinet.

here's our dry bar. it connects the kitchen to formal dining room. this pic was taken before the outlet covers and wine glass holder were attached! the cabinets below have pullouts that hold all the alcohol and mixers. uppers hold all of our glassware and crystal. beverage fridge is a Kitchenaid. opposite the bar is our large walk-in pantry.

"That's where we have our meals at night and the only time we really communicate with each other. :):) :)" NHB, that's just sad! LOL!! We have an office with a desk, etc. and that's where we work and we also have files in there of things we want/need to keep. Computer, etc. is also in that room. Since it's just the two of us and no children's schedules to keep up with, a nice size calendar works for us. I keep one hanging on the inside of the pantry door. I also have a small basket in that area of my kitchen which holds a few pieces of mail, or some important something or other that we might need in the near future. Otherwise it's in the office. tina

I don't know if this will help. This is what we are doing. On Left: There will be an under counter refrigerator for beverages. Next to the fridge is a wine rack. Behind the "appliance garage" we will keep our opened wine du jour that doesn't need refrigeration, ice bucket, and other alcoholic drink accessories. Above behind glass doors will be stem ware and other drinking glasses. On Right: There will be an expresso/latte maker behind the appliance garage as well as coffee, scoop, etc. Above behind glass doors will be coffee mugs, expresso cups, tea cups, tea pots, etc. In the bank of drawers will be snacks. Between the cabinets is a garden sink to be used as an extra prep sink as well as beverage center sink. We garden a lot, so this 4' wide sink with console legs is very useful, especially since this beverage center/garden sink area is at the far end of our mudroom just outside the main kitchen. Above the sink are open shelves for pretty things, and useful things.

Being a lift console EC, the shelves are behind closed doors and the top flips up, so I can't put anything on it. Buy next to it, on the adjacent piece, I have a santo lamp I had made for an antique and a small floral piece. They sit on a hand-woven runner from Chimayo, NM. Above our EC, I have these three pieces, all handmade by an Oklahoma artist. They're not paintings, but real wearable pieces. DH is part Oklahoma Chickasaw Indian, so these are very special to us. Wow Cotehele, your kitchen is fabulous! I love the wood tone and the classic look. It is such a warm and inviting space. Your bev center is lovely and the tin cabinet door are a nice touch. Thanks for the inspiration.

Thanks, Dilly. I like the design of your beverage center. Ihink you will be fine with 21'' deep upper cabinets. My base cabinets are deep because the refrigerator is standard depth rather than counter depth. You might consider 21'' deep uppers and 30'' deep base cabs.

We are doing a piece that looks similar, but it is a stand alone (hutch/pantry/buffet), so we will have hutch ends connecting the uppers & lowers. It will be 6' long, and have beadboard paneling like yours. We are doing standard depth uppers & lowers (12"/24"). We're doing shallow top drawers like you, but beneath that we will have doors that house shallow pull outs on the top, and deeper pullouts on the bottom. We decided all drawers weren't the best solution in this case, as we'll have some standing canned goods in the shallow pull outs & taller standing items in the deeper pull outs, like soda bottles for entertaining, tall bottles of veg oil, vinegar, etc. Don't know if your "wine & refreshments" are going in the uppers or lowers or both, but just make sure everything will fit the way you want it to if you go with all drawers.

Thanks Elbal. I hadn't thought about tall soda bottles, etc. I am also thinking of adding a wine rack in upper cabinets. I want to have all refreshments below and just glasses in upper cabinets. Thanks!

You're welcome. Can't wait to see yours. I'd love glass uppers like yours, but will be storing things like cereal boxes, chips, etc. in mine, and of course glass uppers wouldn't be practical. Good luck!
