Ours isn't 100% complete, but this is our nook area, which I would group in the built in hutch defn. The top is for glasses. The sides for linens and napkins and the bottom, a catchall for mail and "stuff".

And as a fellow 'shorty', having an extra shelf for dishes at a height I can reach is fabulous! Your husband can't possibly realize how annoying it is to have things constantly out of reach.

Here is mine. I hope you don't get a neck cramp trying to look at it. I can't seem to get it to stay rotated. The left side actually hides a pull out pantry and the right is pull out shelves for storage. the middle holds my dishes etc.

Here's ours. We wanted it to look like a modest built-in that would be in a kitchen or breakfast nook of a 1920's bungalow. I don't like that the tv box is so prominent but haven't found a good way to hide it.

It hides pipes in the upper left cabinets and on the bottom right base cabinet is a undercounter refrig.

vicnsb, Sorry for the tardy response. I just saw your comment. The dimensions on the hutch are 6' wide by 8' high and 15" deep. The "sides" are 18" wide, 12" deep and 6" shorter than the center portion. Hope this is helpful.

Thanks for all of the help -- while all of these are great, sweeby and ging9, your style is really what I am trying to find -- where top cabs come down to counter top. I would love to someday just reach in and get the dishes and plates I need rather than only being able to reach what is in the first shelf most of the time! DH is concerned about loss of counter space in front, but I love the idea that this configuration keeps that section of the counter "clutter free" by design. We tend to live by piles and I am trying desperately in this new design to avoid the tendency for that by having designated areas for mail, homework, etc. that does not include all of the counter space in the kitchen!

A warning: If your dish hutch is located above or very near your dishwasher, so that you will be lifting dishes from the dishwasher directly into the open hutch, consider having 170-degree hinges on the hutch doors that hover over the countertop. Those hinges will allow the open cabinet doors to be fully out of the way of your head as you bend over the dishwasher. The standard 110-degree hinges, on the other hand, make the open cabinet doors hang over the edge of the counter--an accident waiting to happen.

My trade-off was giving up soft-close doors on that cabinet. The 170-degree hinges apparently didn't come with that feature.
