Warped Wall Studs ?

Building a house in NC but live in MD. Just visited new house and noted that the framers have put up a number of interior wall studs that are "half cut" through at about the half way (on a 45 degree angle) length (9 ft) and then another 2x4 about 5 ft long is "sistered" onto the stud. GC had not noted this before and is checking into it. Is this an attempt to save money by using warped studs.

Not a rant but the framming crew is hispanic and I have never seen this process before. I have been involved with a number of homes as an owner or friend of new oweners?

Does not appear to necessarily bad but what about future impacts?

Has anyone else even seen this?

interior non-load bering wall? Not an issue. The studs may have warped once they were installed and the framers were trying to fix them rather than tear them out and replace. I would not hesitate to do this myself framing my own house.

I think i would go out and get a case of beer for that crew, they should be commended for checking for warped studding and taking the time for the fix.We always added that to our punch list before calling a frame done checking for warped studs.Another way to straighten is to let in blocking, but sistering works as well.A good drywall crew will shave/shim warped studs, but it's nice for them when they dont have to.

Yes my ceiling slopes terribly and it really shows up now I have cabs to ceiling and crown moulding. The solution as far as I can tell is not to look at it.... and to vow that if I ever have another kitchen remodel I will insist the contractor levels out the framing for the ceiling... I stupidly did not look ahead to that issue. I can only assure you that when it is all done and you have the whole room to look at you will not notice it as badly. I certainly don't notice mine as much now and guests have to have it pointed out even though I think it hits you in the face..... Good luck! Tina

Why would you want to screw it to the wall? As long as you use enough studs. align them well so they are in the same plane, and screw the hardie backer to the studs with the recommended screw spacing, it will be plenty rigid, and without distortion.

Ugh ! So to me it looks like someone was a bit over zealous in what they could fit...Your counters are already installed.. That cabinet between the ref and the stove should have been about and inch or 2 smaller and you would have no issue. The ref appears to be installed a bit crooked seeing the gap on the left side - if you straighten it out that should fix the microwave door opening problem - it looks like there is enough room. That cabinet above the ref seems very low to the top of the ref. Did they have the specs of you appliances before sizing the cabinets? Most ref need at least a 1" air space at the top - it may be deceiving from the angle. The center of the ref doors don't look close at all to the center of the wall cabinet above it... again - it could be an optical illusion... Try pushing the ref to the left...

I can't recall aluminum studs being addressed in the building code. They could very well be there...but I've never seen them referred to. Not have I seen an aluminum stud in person, or on any building site. I have received marketing info for aluminum studs. And when I looked at the specs, they are actually steel studs. The marketing info came from manufacturers/sellers in China. Best bet would be to get a material spec sheet from your contractor. Or, ask your AHJ if they have any familiarity with aluminum studs. Sorry I can't answer your question directly.

They're being more thorough than necessary. Usually, when the cut is at an angle, the stud closes up and is held straight by the drywall or they may drive in another nail to hold it straight. This kind of warping is a particular problem where plumbing drains pass through and you can't sister another stud.
