Double wall oven vs. Double wall oven with microwave/convection
Comments (4)I have had the Kitchen Aid KEMS308S for 5 years. I had not noticed that the microwave power was low. I doubt that power will be an issue. I assume that many ovens have cool down features. They are not running when the door is open. It is ture that the fan makes some noise, but it isn't that noticable. When I originally purchased this oven I had been intending to get individual ovens, but it turned out that the individual ovens had been discontinued. I see no difference between your choices because they are all double ovens and when one fails, they both fail wheras individual ovens could be replaced individually. I have not heard of the microwave section showing a high rate of failure. You didn't even mention the advantage of the micro/convection. It is not just a microwave, but a real convection oven with a broiling (sort of) element. It is not a speed oven because it does not microwave and heat at the same time. Actually it CAN microwave and crisp via the broil element. Anyway it is a small second oven that can bake a pie or bread (or a small trey of cookies I suppose). It heats far faster than the regular large convection oven because it is small. I find it very useful. The only problem is it is occasionally in use when I would want to reheat a cup of coffee etc. I keep an old microwave in the garage for those cases. While I hope I have relieved your concerns, I believe that there IS an issue. I have had no problem with my oven, and it has been several years since the Main contingent of problems: similar models have encountered a higher than normal thermal fuse blowing during the large oven self cleaning cycle. Unfortunately, the fuse is located on the back of the oven and is a $50 item and shuts everything down. Of course, most people see no problem (myself included) and the problem is certainly due to excessive heat behind the cabinet that could probably relieved by making sure that there is a little more open space back there since you are still installing cabinets? In any case, this is probably a general issue. Other ovens have failed on self clean cycles. At this point, many people concider the self clean to be a marketing ploy and don't use it. Perhaps we just don't make enough spattering roasts, but I have easily wiped down the main oven. It wasn't stuck on hard. Perhaps the surface has anti stick coating? My self cleans have been done mainly to test the thermal fuse problem. By the way, the microwave interior is stainless steel and IS much harder to clean. In fact, that last sentence is probably my most important piece of information. I imagine it would apply to other convection microwaves....See MorePictures please - built-in Microwave & oven stacked on same wall
Comments (39)@j_bird @oppsie @jgopp @kashmi @Annie Deighnaugh @desertsteph i know this is an old post but for those that went from a single microwave/oven combo to a separate microwave and oven, how did you manage with the wiring? i know the oven/microwave combo was probably hardwired with 220V with no other electrical outlets back there (at least that's how mine is). did you run a new line from a nearby existing electrical outlet to create a new electrical outlet to plug in your new countertop microwave?...See MoreSamsung built in oven- microwave combo and IKEA cabinets
Comments (9)The Ikea tall cabinets all have a shelf included with them - this is partly because for an 80" or 90" high cabinet the sides will tend to want to bow outward due to their own weight/flexibility if there were just the top/bottom cross pieces - but there is a good bit of leeway in where you actually have to put that interior shelf. In our case it is right at the 60" mark - allowing room for the 30" tall doors above the oven. The oven itself is actually sitting on a UTRUSTA reinforced ventilated shelf - which is what the appliance installer then put the 1/2 inch shims on to set the height exactly where we wanted it. Link to shelf The reinforced shelf is held in with metal brackets and extra screws - it is rated to hold up to 150kg (330 pounds) I believe the cabinet config that you are talking about is one that has a separate shelf for a microwave over a built-in wall oven. If you are looking to by a third-party combination oven, you need to essentially buy the configuration Ikea would sell for a single wall oven - and figure out which doors/drawers/trim you want or need above and below the oven. If you are doing the configuration yourself in the Ikea planner or working in store with someone make sure that you take all the measurements and check them twice - and then again. I spent hours on the configuration of our oven cabinet - especially since we were going with Semihandmade doors/drawer fronts and I knew I couldn't just run down to the store and exchange parts if I got it wrong. I served as kitchen designer on our whole-house renovation and the MOST nervous I was the whole time was when we were getting to finally install the oven and put the fronts on that cabinet....See Moredouble wall oven vs microwave convection wall oven
Comments (5)I just removed a 17 yr old KitchenAid oven/microwave combo. The convection oven was great until recently, but the attached microwave died after 2 years. I'd advise to get separate appliances, not attached combo appliances. If one of the attached appliances fails, it's an expensive repair. We've been using countertop microwaves for the last 15 years. I replaced the oven with a GE Twin Flex double oven. I had a shelf built above it & a new outlet installed, and put a new countertop Panasonic mw there. So glad to get the microwave off my counters! . I looked at the small convection/mw speed ovens -- many here love them. But I wasn't sure how much ventilation space we'd have for one. Plus if the Panasonic fizzles out after a couple of years as microwaves are prone to do, it will be easy to plug in a new one. Here's the Twin Flex, two ovens in the space of a single oven. So far, it's been terrific. I'll post a picture of my set up tomorrow, even though the mw isn't trimmed out yet....See MoreP K
