Range hood: The range hood is a custom piece, built out in wood by Revolutionary Restoration and Building.
Island: The heart of the kitchen is the extra-large island, the space’s functional workhorse. At 13 feet 2 inches long and 4 feet wide, the island is quite large. The bulk of the length — 10 feet 2 inches — features a white oak counter that adds warmth to the room thanks to the wood tones. Shelving on the back side of the island creates a storage place for the homeowners’ cookbook collection.
Baking station: The remaining 3 feet of the island features a baking station with a Carrara marble top, a special perk for one of the owners who is an avid baker. The marble stone’s thermal properties help keep dough chilled, making it easier to handle.

Appliances: Because the family likes to bake, the oven takes center stage on the wall next to the refrigerator. This family doesn’t microwave much, so tucking the microwave above the oven works for them.

Cabinetry: Custom, built-in cabinetry around the perimeter of the kitchen rises to the ceiling and provides plenty of storage. These Shaker-style cabinets are made of hard maple and have a painted white finish. The glass doors beside them create a protected space to display the family’s silver collection.

Roll-out drawers provide easy access to the stand mixer and other frequently used items. Less frequently used tools and holiday items stay tucked away on the taller shelves inside the cabinets.

Who lives here: A couple
Location: Litchfield, Connecticut
Size: 625 square feet (58 square meters)
Designers: Crisp Architects and Revolutionary Restoration & Building
The backstory: Before renovation, the kitchen was closed off to the rest of the house, had no seating area and was much smaller (250 square feet). The home’s new owners — who have a passion for baking and sharing family time in the kitchen — wanted a big, bright kitchen that connected to the dining room and where they could comfortably host guests and hang out. Converting a secondary attached garage into their new kitchen gave them the space they needed and, because they did not have to add to the home’s footprint, also saved them time and money. They converted the existing kitchen into living space.
Scope of work: Conversion of an existing, attached garage to a kitchen
Perimeter countertop: black granite; cabinet hardware: Tolson cabinet knobs, Rejuvenation (among others); mounted dish rack: custom by Revolutionary Restoration & Building; perimeter sink: Shaws collection, Rohl
