Major update for Pandigital Novel

I received an e-mail from Barnes and Noble this morning about a major update for Pandigital Novel. I was able to get the update through B & N. It was over 1gig in size, so it took quite a while to download and install.

I don't know if it's just my imagination, but it seems that the pad is lots more responsive to just light taps instead of requiring "hammer blows".

I haven't downloaded it yet because I haven't used the novel in a while, but from the looks of things, it's going to make it more of a general Android tablet instead of a special version of Android.

Yes, and I think that's good. Those of us who have been hesitant to hack our device will now have access to Android apps, etc.

Kamil - I sure don't want to step on anyone's toes here, but I'm assuming if December babies can move to June, if they want, that you could move up one month and receive before your actual birth month since you won't be in the country that month. no it does not stand in landscape, only as shown. The padded fabric area that morphs into the stand is sewn on at the bottom so that makes it impossible to adjust that option. I added my review and the pics with the rollover notes on the amazon page for this case since there were no pics there for it. I like the ability to add the notes on the pictures. Body Glove E-Reader Travel Hard Shell Case, Black (9112601) I used it all day yesterday to see how I liked it and honestly I really do like the case, I thought it would make it heavy but it doesn't and for me it makes it easier to hold. With my arthritis in my hands it was at times hard to hold onto the thin slick PDN, this gives me much more to hold onto which really helps when you have trouble grasping in the first place. It does block the SD card slot but it holds the unit in so securely that sliding off one elastic band does not allow the PDN to fall out, the other 3 hold it in. The unique thing I did not mention is that this case actually has 8 elastic bands that you can choose from so that it will fit various ereaders, most only have the 4. Very nice for those that own more than one type of ereader. From the provided info it holds these: Fits the Amazon Kindle 2, Barnes & Noble Nook, and Sony Reader Daily Edition, Touch Edition and PRS-700 and now they can add the PDN to their list. After having been able to test it out, I would absolutely purchase it. Just wish it came in pink LOL

The site is actually a companion to the publication, and an attempt by CR to stay viable in the publishing business. The method being used is called a "hook". You review the free limited information with the hope a viewer subscribes to the site, or the magazine for total access. Just recently CR offered me a discounted publication subscription renewal along with a free gift subscription for anyone of my choice. And, this is not the first time one of my subscriptions has done this. Right now on the desk next to my monitor is an offer from Smithsonian Magazine. They are offering me a reduced renewal, and two free gift subscriptions. The "hook" is being directed towards both myself, and in the future the new readers. It is obvious to me the Internet is rapidly effecting the publication industry. Finally for myself when I am spending money, as I did just recently on a new SS refrigerator and a SS range, I am more concerned as to the quality and reliability of the information rather than as to whether it is free or not. This thread has taken on a life of it's own!!! kec01, then by your definition, it's a McMansion. Well, not by my definition, because it is among the best of design, workmanship and landscaping that I have ever seen. However, yes, it surrounded by McMansions, my wife fondly refers to as "the big uglys". But getting back to the point, where do *you* have *your* nestegg invested, and how do you plan to beat, or even come close to the inevitable inflationary spiral? I was watching some of the "financial guru's" talking about how our economic condition doesn't look like 1929, or the Japanese meltdown, but more like the Weimar Republic of 1919. (kec01, you can google that also!) If that is the case, I'd better start looking for a deserted island with space to grow a crop!

it has been on the pandigital site for a while now, it does change the home screen and some of how other things look yes it does make it more of an android tablet. I have not done it yet on mine, I have so many books on mine and when you do the update it removes everything including bookmarks too. I don't even remember where i got all the books from to try to have to reload them so would have to save them all to sd card and do it that way.

I have never had do tap hard at all just a very light touch with my finger tip is all it has ever taken. Mine has been very responsive since I got it.

After I got my Android phone, I kind of stopped using my Novel very much, and when this update came out, I was busy and didn't get around to it. When I finally found time, I couldn't find my charger. I finally found it this weekend, recharged the battery and installed the update. I had to run it several times and when I finished, I was missing some videos (but they're still on my laptop, so I can transfer them when I get a chance).

Overall, I like it, but I wish they had gone to a higher release level than 2.0. I also wish we had access to the full marketplace rather than the limited one they give us.

I forgot how much I disliked the sensitivity (or lack thereof) of the screen. I bought a package of DS styluses, which helps a lot, but I like the response I get from my phone a lot better. But it's definitely easier to read things like books and web pages on the Novel (and that type of use makes the screen sensitivity easier to live with).

I'll have to download some videos to it and see how they play. IIRC, videos didn't always display very smoothly with the old OS.

I thought the update brought it up to 2.2? It was originally at 2.0.

I'm going by the "Check Compatibility" information in the app market. Maybe that's reporting it incorrectly, but it says this device is 2.0.

I rechecked and it did come with 2.0 originally so it has to be either 2.1 now or 2.2 I thought sure it was 2.2 because it can do flash with the appropriate apps...

I don't have my PDN I loaned it to a family member since I have so many tablets and readers now and they were wanting to get the feel of one.

I was looking at SlateDroid and the consensus there is that it's 2.0, but you can make a change to a properties file that will allow some 2.1 apps to load (but if they really need 2.1 compatibility, they won't run).
