Why the heck are cd's sooo much more than DVD's???

Even if there were a couple dollars difference, but it's not, it's 30-50% more for the CD's.

Had to research this one.

100 pack CDs = $16
100 pack DVDs = $23.82
So,
each CD is 16 cents and each DVD is 24 cents.
But, a DVD is 4482 MB and a CD is 703 MB.
4482/703 = 6.3755, so it takes just over
6 CD's to = 1 DVD. 6*16cents = 96 cents.

Disk for disk CDs are cheaper.
For storage capacity, DVDs are cheaper.

Why? Because they can is my best guess.

That's interesting Poohbear. Here in Canada when Sam's was still open, 100 DVD's were $18.88, and 100 cd's were $38.88
So there is a big difference.

Today at another department store, 50 CD's were $45 and
the DVD's were $32. weird.

If you haven't used it on something else yet, both systems qualify for the $1500 federal tax credit which is nice. The 16 seer system gives you a higher seer rating (17.55 as compared to 15.00)which helps during summer months. The HSPF rating is 8.8 as compared to 8.5. BUT - the 14 seer unit gives you a higher heating capacity so less time you'd be using the electric heat strip. Being in upstate NY - I would think you would be more worried about heating than cooling. Typically - the 16 seer system would be a more costly system so it sounds like you may be able to 'make a deal' with the 14 seer system. Ask them for a free humidifier or something of that nature.

I had a Kohler, navy blue cast iron sink for many years and it was great. The finish became dull in some places but I could always give it a good scrubbing and then rub a little olive oil on it to restore the shine. I just replaced it with a fire clay white sink and I'm still somewhat afraid of it. The porcelain coating on the cast iron could chip, but I'm afraid the clay sink could actually break. They are both heavy. Delivery and installation was a tense time. Kohler's website has cleaning instructions for both kinds. According to them- the clay seems easier to clean. My friend, a carpenter, said he's been seeing a lot of clay sinks in new installations lately. These decisions seem so important and un-important at the same time don't they? I'm telling myself that eventually I'll get used to whatever I wind up doing.

Some places use actual sale prices as the tax valuation, others use an average of sale prices in defined (at least at the tax office) adjusted for amenities (bedrooms, bathrooms, lot area, age of the structure, phase of the moon, whatever method they are allowed to use. Virginia generally requires averaging spread over some method (that the tax office does not want to discuss) but other places use sale prices. One thing that is common in areas that use 'market value' is that they often hold the valuation low enough to avoid a lot of appeals. I have never had a property (VA, NH, and other places) I would sell for the tax appraisal. It makes it hard to argue your valuation is high.

Diane, If only I could travel there and bring back plants! It sounds like a really good nursery. I wish my local nursery could have stayed in business. They were very good about taking care of their plants and would hold bought/sold ones for customers if we couldn't take it home right away. Kitasei, I think BayAreaGirl and GardenGal answered really well. I would like to add that band size and gallon size roses are usually pot-culture roses (started from cuttings) and they should come well rooted. I've come to expect that it's pretty much a given that most places will sell you a potted up bare root (grafted or ownroot) early in the year. These will generally come in 2-3gal pots. I think you can tell they were originally bare roots from how thick the cane/crown/top growth is compared to the size of the pot they're in. Fully container grown roses of that size would not be able to thrive in that tight space. The top growth reflects the size of the roots, or in this case - the size the roots used to be. Bare roots can stay in those pots for a while because they need to regrow their roots, but they should quickly outgrow them. Now, if I saw a rose for sale in a 5gal (or larger) pot, then that would lead me to believe that it's been in the pot for a long while and has a big root system.

Doesn't Canada have a media tax on disks?
The money goes to the Canadian versions of the MPAA/RIAA.
I know some countries have this, adding to the cost of the disks.

I honestly don't know if there's a tax on the discs or not. But even so, the price difference is huge, and I just don't know why. Interesting though. I can see I'm going to be buying discs if I go shopping in the US.

If there were a tax on CDs here in Canada it would also apply to a DVD for the same reasons. Our government has talked about this and I do believe it will become law or will take effect real soon. However the huge difference between a CD and DVD is very troubling to say the least. Rip off comes to mind.

Tigerdirect Canada has a 50 Maxcell CD pack for $34.99 and a 100 pack same brand for $27.99 - seems quite normal to me???? Staples has a store brand 100 CD pack for a mere $67.94

well if you go to the states to shop for them go to Big Lots I buy all of my cd and dvd's there and they are cheaper than any other place and all name brand. The pack of Phillips DVD's I am looking at right now I paid less than 4cents per DVD.
