Using your new appliance now before your kitchen is remodeled?

Hi, we are likely going into an addition and kitchen remodel this November. Well, probably the addition will be built first, then tackle the kitchen and inside work in the winter months (we're in Chicago).

My question is this: would you buy your new gas range sooner, before the work starts? I want to take advantage of any sales (Columbus Day, Black Friday, etc...). And if you would buy it sooner, would you have it installed so you can use it right away? Or would you wait until you had the new kitchen to have it installed?

I forgot to add that I have no "need" to use the new stove now. My current one is just fine. I would just want it installed so I could inspect it and use it. If there were any problems, I'd be within a reasonable purchase time frame to complain.

Just trying to come up with a timeline in my head... thanks!

If you buy it early then I would have it installed and use it for exactly the reasons you mention. But I would seriously consider waiting for the remodel to buy it - unless you have all the kitchen plans in place now, you might find that you want a different size range or different finish when you actually plan out the kitchen. Sales happen all the time.

First, make sure you buy your appliances before any price increase. Second, it sort of depends on how much you want to pay for installation, knowing that it'll be uninstalled in 6 months or so. Finally, you can't change your mind later even if GW users all decide they hate whatever-you-just-picked-out and next year's model is infinitely superior :)

In my case, the range sat in the garage for 5 months because I wasn't desperate to use it and installing it would have meant removal of cabinets below cooktop, aka major demolition. The new fridge was just plugged in (didn't bother with an icemaker hookup) because I was anxious, if not desperate, to get rid of the Reagan era energy hog POS. And the new DW was supposed to sit in the garage, 'til the old DW's leak got out of control...grrr... so both the DW and fridge were test driven.

Appliance dealer and the guy they sent knew everything about every appliance. He gave tips about using the GE Monogram oven and GE Monogram induction cooktop, the Miele dishwasher and the F/P dishwasher drawer. He even came back on the weekend when we discovered during the installation that the electrician had not wired properly for the induction cooktop and the installation had to be delayed until the electrician fixed the wiring. I know we probably lucked into a real gem but in general I would go with someone who did this every day for a living rather than someone who did this as part of a larger and more diversified job. HTH.

Well... tonights dinner for DH. Involved having to fry up seasoned pork chops, then sauting onions and apples, then creating sauce, and adding back pork to simmer. The controls are exacting and immediate. Messy dinner. Sticky rice had spilled on cooktop, errant onions, drips of sauce. All was wiped squeaking clean with a couple of sweeps of a damp paper paper towel and then i went over with a microfiber cloth. Done. I prepped my entire salad on the bakers table cause it's so easy to grab what I need from the frig right next to it and plop it on the table. I'm keeping my bowls in done of deep drawers of the bakers table. I baked my croutons in the speed oven and used my bottom on intensive bake to bake up 6 huge fat sweet potatos for during the week. (adding to dogs food and to cut up into salads for me for lunch). I totally guessed on what to use because I don't read manuals. So I winged it with Intensive Bake at 400. All potatos were carmelized within 30 minutes. I've never seen anything like it. They did drip onto the bottom of the oven so I have to think about that next time. Agree with eleena. In my bathroom, I can't get the cleaner for the tile on the mirror, or the faucet cleaner on the floor, or the floor cleaner on the faucet. You can't clean the whole thing without a damn spreadsheet. Teasing aside, having a simple cleaning service is not an upper class thing, at least not for two-job households. However, the reality is, having an intelligent, reliable cleaning person is an upper-class luxury, unless you happen to be lucky. I would love to have a touchup every week or two. However, I remember what the cleaning people did at my mom's place when she got sick and couldn't do it all herself. Each week, something new was broken, scratched, stained or missing. She couldn't afford to supplement the housekeeper's income by running out and buying new carpets or collectibles or lamps on a weekly basis--which is precisely what you are doing if you allow someone to break something in your house without paying for it. She lucked out for a while with an old Italian lady who cleaned like she did, but for the most part they were more trouble and money than they were worth. Now, if you can afford real staff, then you can get into human resources techniques. But if you can't, then you're not the employer, just a customer, and you take what you get.

Thank you so much, Lydiasmomma! Yes those metal cabinets with the drainboard sinks are charming. I have to admit that we were pretty hard on the enamel finish though, and the former owners must have been, too. I adored the drainboards, but not trying to keep the sink portion looking nice. Bar Keeper's Friend was the only thing that kept it decent, and even then it seemed tough on it. I about choked when I found out that the sink could have lead in it too. But then I decided we weren't going around licking it, so hey. What I'm really trying to say is, enjoy your new sink! : ) Yes, the exposed beam was absolutely structural. We had to jack up the house after we moved in, and when we did so, we watched the areas where it was pegged together (that had come loose as the house sagged) go back together tightly again. Whoa.

We installed our new range in our old kitchen and enjoyed it for several months before we began demolition. Since it was going back into the exact same location in the remodeled kitchen it didn't cost anything to disconnect it and move it and then put it back.

At the other extreme, we planned and budgeted for a new fridge in the remodeled kitchen, but kept using the old one through the entire process. And two years after we declared the new kitchen finished* we still haven't gotten around to buying a new fridge.

* It seems to be an unwritten rule that a DIY kitchen is never 100% finished.
