replacement power supply

I have a at&t 2wire modem/router. Last night the power supply got very hot and I had to unplug it. Today the modem is not receiving power. I run my credit card machines off this modem so I had to have a replacement asap. I went to Radio Shack and the clerk said they did not have a possible replacement. I went to Best Buy and bought an entire new 2wire modem/router just to get the power supply. AT & T offers a replacement power supply for $12.00 with $13.50 in shipping costs. It drives me crazy to think I have to spend 13.50 to get the thing! Does anyone have any ideas where I can buy one either online or in a retail store in Indianapolis. The information I have is Input:120V c.a. 50/60Hz ), 15A Output: 5,1V --DC 2A

Forget the power supply, you're talking a modem. Most, ISP's will gladly give you a new modem. If you've had service with AT&T for any length of time, just tell them your modem is bad, end of story. Don't need to troubleshoot it, that's their problem.

Generally speaking when talking about power supplies, it's the power supply on the computer that's being discussed, not the peripherals.

Modems and routers are notorious for getting hot, make sure you always have yours positioned for max air flow.

Granny you may want to try connecting the power supply to the computer. This is just to make sure the female end on the power supply will fit over the male post on the computer. Some of those vary in size and I do believe it has to do with the voltages so we don't make too many mistakes. Better to find out now before you travel so you know it fits.

What I mean is, what is not matching up with the the power supply you bought - basically what is the problem you're having in getting the right power supply to attach correctly. If it's just that you have extra PSU connectors that don't seem to fit anywhere - that's quite common. Often extra ones are included so it they'll fit more computers. Most likely you will have both extra PSU connectors, and as well, unused motherboard connectors that were never connected to anything. So make sure you're actually plugging connectors from the PSU to connectors on the motherboard - that are actually expecting PSU power. If you plug something in, just because the connector fits, you could wreck your motherboard - a particular mobo connector might not have anything to do with the power supply, as is the case so far with the USB and audio pin terminals. The easiest way is just to see what's connected with the old broken PSU, and connect the new one up the same way.

Many computers use variable speed fans that adjust based on thermal load. If you think the fan in your power supply is failing, then you can either replace the power supply or open it and replace the fan (which will probably take a bit more skill). If you have a "store bought" computer many of the major manufacturers use propitiatory power supplies and connectors, so you'll need to find an exact match. That might be a challenge for a computer manufactured in '08. If you're lucky enough to have a standard ATX power supply, then any computer store on online vendor will have plenty to choose from at a variety of price points.
