power supply fan suggestions

My computer is a 2008 has never had the power supply replaced. My son put in a new cpu fan and I did the other fan. but come to find out it still speeds up-off and on during the time its on. Shuts off after an hour or two on...but comes back on easy. I usually try after several hours of being off. No problem there...Im assuming its ps as it sounds like the general area of sound but then thats why the other fans were replaced. Any suggestion would be greatful, if it is ps or any other ideas. If its supply unit will any work on it? I do not have funds to put the best in, so a good basic. Thank you much in advanced. )

Many computers use variable speed fans that adjust based on thermal load. If you think the fan in your power supply is failing, then you can either replace the power supply or open it and replace the fan (which will probably take a bit more skill).

If you have a "store bought" computer many of the major manufacturers use propitiatory power supplies and connectors, so you'll need to find an exact match. That might be a challenge for a computer manufactured in '08. If you're lucky enough to have a standard ATX power supply, then any computer store on online vendor will have plenty to choose from at a variety of price points.

From your description, there are 3 fans in your system. A fan to cool the whole box; a fan for the cpu; and a fan for the power supply. The first two fan speeds are variable control as MK states. The power supply fan usually never changes speed unless going bad. If willing to change an individual fan, the part number is on the fan somewhere.

Power supplies are very easy to replace. Dell uses propriatary power supplies with different plugs than the ones you buy at electronic stores. Just be sure to get a Dell or a Dell clone power supply which matches your computer. Then to install all you have to do is unplug the computer and unscrew the old supply and BEFORE you remove any of the old plugs, just lay the new supply next to the old and as you unplug each plug, plug in the new one. They are color coded so no big problem. It's hard to know for sure if it's just the power supply as lightening may have fried the rest of the computer, was it on a surge suppressor. If so, the manufacturer of the supressor should reimburse you for the loss.

eMachines were/are notorious for the cheap power supply failing and in many cases taking out the motherboard too. Sadly that seems to be the case with yours. A repair is costly. Not only the expense of the motherboard and the installation fees if you cannot do it yourself but you also have to buy another copy of Windows unless you are willing to argue with Microsoft. Microsoft changed the rules last year so that folks like you could not re-install the operating system if the motherboard was replaced. However if you phone Microsoft and let them know the situation you will be allowed to use your existing copy of Windows. Again this will depend on the tenacity of the person doing the repairs for you. Whoever phones may need to be firm with them but I understand they can and do make exceptions

I'm including a link to a very good (although long) discussion about power vents. So you noticed that pulling a batt of insulation over the attic access/stair reduced the smell. attic vents create a negative pressure on attics. air is then drawn in through openings from the conditioned space into the attic when the fans are in use. (see why it cools off the attic!) when fans are off is when smell would be greater. Don't add insulation until you seal openings from attic into conditioned space. And avoid power vents. True and as long as the voltage is the same should be ok. So, the possible dangerous situations are: If the voltage is too high for the device. If the amps are too low for the device. As a general rule, devices that produce a lot of heat or light or movement usually need a high current supply. Devices that control things, like a TV remote or some small gadget with maybe a few LEDs on it, won't need a lot of current.

I don't believe laptops have an internal "power supply", per se. so it's likely a desktop that's being discussed. Unless the description is misleading.

Most laptop users don't use cooling devices. Whether they should or shouldn't isn't so much the issue but rather lugging one around makes a laptop less "portable" and more bulky. Those who prefer laptops typically do so for portability reasons.
