Have you thought of using UHaul's U-Box service? It's usually pretty reasonable--you could proabably rent the unit and have it shipped to your delivery address (from MT to TX) for around $1500. You fill the U-Box/POD (think small storage unit on a large pallet) and they will ship it for you to your destination address. If you would prefer an even more economical route and you can pull a trailer with your car, you can rent the U-Box trailer and pull the loaded U-Box yourself. Good luck to you!

Check your local Craigslist to see if anyone is running a trailer or a truck down to Texas. Offer to share costs.

Also, look into plain FREIGHT shipping companies, not moving companies.

Crate it up and set it truck freight.

It might take anything from days to a week or two for a small load, but it will get there eventually.

A wooden crate is best, even though it adds to the weight you must pay for shipping.
It will stand up to a fork-lift and other rough handling better than any cardboard box.

Wow you guys were quick! Thanks. I can't haul a trailer- I have a VW Beetle! But- about the uHaul pod... I will look into it again. Last year, because I am in a small town- Cody is the nearest town, I couldn't even get a truck! There weren't any in Billings(120 miles away because so many people were leaving WY/MT!)

lazygardens- I know you don't live where I do, but hoping you may have some knowledge- I did try to find freight co's, but I couldn't find any that went past the southern
WY border- are you aware of any that do?

Greyhound is another option. I know when I bought some antiques from MA it was one of the options my friend looked into until they found a freight broker that they could ship freight to me in Austin, TX.

It can probably haul a smaller u-haul trailer.

Also try uShip. You can place your job on there and folks will respond with a bid to do the hauling. The haulers there are everyone from 18-wheeler drivers with an empty trailer leg to individuals hauling as a side job.

Be careful with smaller moving outfits. A newer scam is that they show up and load and hold your goods hostage until they get the price they want.

don't know what it would cost but you might also look into UPS FREIGHT. They claim they'll ship anything no matter the size.

Also, U-Haul shows several dealers in that. Is the problem that they just don't have any trucks available b/c everyone is leaving the area and no one is moving in?

Oh, bevangel- you are exactly right- the UHaul type dealers say they just don't have anything because everybody is leaving the state. A couple places have closed.

Are you sure those three things weigh FIVE TONS?
That seems awfully heavy for those items.....

Brickeyee - Uhaul has rules on what vehicles are allowed for pulling one of their trailers. Doesn't mean it can't, just that you can't rent one to haul.

Maybe you can drive the beetle to where you are moving the items, rent the truck there and drive back to load it up etc.,

Uhaul installed a hitch on a friend's VW Beetle a year or so ago, and she hauls stuff all the time with one of their rentals.
It CAN be done.

add: I just check the UHaul hitch site... they still add hitches to Beetles.

A Vee Dubber hauling 5 tons over mountain passes? Would make a great VW commercial, but sure would be hard on the beetle, even if U-Haul allocated it hauling that much weight. I would go Nycefarm's route and rent a U-haul or Ryder round trip.

Sorry- my finger hit an extra '0'! It is 1000# VW's don't haul that amout, and they are not recommended to haul any weight at all according to my VW dealer- yes I have seen a couple with tiny trailers that must be hauling cotton balls! I should review my original post- I thought I put the info about what I was wanting to haul- maybe not. As sierraeast pointed out there are mountain passes (have to be careful when I drive with the horses with my Dodge Ram 3500 dually even then). And no, I can't use the truck as here in San Antonio the truck is a sitting duck to be stolen(three stolen from my condo complex this month- we don't have garages- though I doubt that would even stop a thief). I don't think the 'round trip' would work- just think- 1. It takes me 3 days each way. That is 6 days of driving, 4 nites in a motel, 4,000 miles of rental miles on the UHaul type rental, and gas for 4,000 miles. With all that-and I am disabled so driving is hard on me- I might as well hire a moving company...
Anyway, I am waiting for a reply from UShip, and have called UHaul, (still no trucks available at this time).

YIPPEE UHaul has a truck! 14' for $900. Will probably cost me that much for gas! I will still wait to see if a freight co calls- if it is about the same price they can do the work....!

When towing weights are set they normally assume a full passenger load in the vehicle.

Empty seats do not add any weight, so even a vehicle not 'rated' to tow any weight can normally still handle lighter loads.
