This is a VERY nasty piece of malware. You CANNOT get rid of Braviax by simply deleting both files with that name in c:\windows and c:\windows\system32, or by unmarking it in MSCFG . On the next reboot or start, they will be back, along with everything else in the payload the nasty delivered. Braviax (which actually may have different names)is just part of the pack. One of my employees carelessly clicked on a link that came up in Google when she was searching for a church! The malware unpacked its payload. It scooted past our two active antivirus programs and firewall. Then it sent up a barrage of popups. Many were phony virus alerts; a click would have launched or downloaded more bad stuff. But some alerts also were coming from AVG, McAfee, and Windows. I quickly fired up AVG, it found an infection right away, but before the scan could complete, the virus disabled AVG. AVG and McAfee won't run now, not even in Safe Mode. The nasty also shut down our cable access to the Internet, hijacking our connection -- and started sending out ITS stuff from OUR PC. What a mess. It's going to take an expert to clean it out, damaged files will need to be reinstalled, and it may be that the best solution will be FORMAT C: and reinstall XP from scratch. The fact that we don't have a dedicated removal tool from any of the big antivirus publishers yet suggests how well the bad guys did their nasty work. I have used both AVG and AVAST and much prefer AVAST now. If AVG has been downloaded and installed on the pc then it is likely running unless it has been disabled. You can look in task manager and see if it is listed, Control Alt Del then look at what is running there. AVAST has a very good user manual in pdf form on the download page, it also tells you exactly how to register it, once you download and install it you have to get an email from them with your registration number then insert it into the Avast program which last about a year then you do it again. avast! urlee, Like 'genes' and 'raven' said, you should not have more than one antivirus program running at the same time. If you plan on keeping Avast I would uninstall AVG either by using 'Programs/AVG/AVG uninstall' or 'Control Panel'. To answer your question: To disable AVG, right click on the AVG icon in the system tray (by the clock), and click on 'Quit AVG Control Center', that will shut down AVG. It will start up again however, if you should reboot your computer. To stop AVG from restarting on reboot go to the MS Config Utility, click 'Start', click 'Run', type in (msconfig) without the quotes and click 'OK'. In the 'System configuration utility' select the 'Startup' tab and deselect (uncheck) the box by 'avgcc' (avgcc.exe/startup). You will be asked to restart your computer, select 'Restart'. After your computer restarts you will get a 'nag' notification box that you have made changes to the Configuration Utility. 'Check' the box 'Do not show me this message again' and click ok. To have AVG start again with Windows go back into the Config Utility, recheck 'avgcc'. You will receive the same prompts again. Witz

OK, I'm using W/98 and trying to uninstall AVG 7. -something. Went to Add/Remove programs and clicked on remove. It tried, but failed and gave me the following: error:action failed for file setup.exe: creating backup... action denied (their dots, I'm not leaving anything out) Under details it says [5]% DESTINATIONS%=C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Free\setup.exec.install_backup",%SOURCE%="C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Free\setup.exec" Now what do I do? I have more than enough memory for Avast to run even with AVG left in place but inactive--is there a way to disable AVG without removing it? Thanks, J
