Thanks, DA and owbist, for the additional input ! :-) owbist, that's something I may consider in the future. For now, though, acquiring an additional monitor is a bit too costly for the use I'd make of it. :-/ DA, to be a bit more specific... my goal in part is to have the other user be able to (among other things) play the Pogo games without squinting ;-) and have me able to access my daily websites without horizontal scrolling if at all possible. While your F11, Ctrl +/- suggestion is very helpful (!), it wouldn't resolve the Pogo issues, since those games have a pop-up play area that isn't affected by those functions. And since the other user finds the native 1280 x 1024 setting too hard on the eyes, we've had Resolution Changer on this computer ever since we got the LCD monitor nearly two years ago, in order to have the monitor set at 1024 x 768 all the time. That setting allows the Pogo games to be more viewable/enjoyable for the other person and has been fine for me -- until this most recent issue: one of my email providers (EuMX.net) upgraded their RoundCube webmail to a version which, for some reason, does not fit on my non-widescreen monitor's display without the horizontal scrollbar. So, since we already have this 'utility' on the computer for easy viewing anyway, I was curious enough to ask if it would be too hard on the computer or the monitor if I were to begin using it to jump back-and-forth between the two resolution settings. I'm glad to find out it wouldn't. :-)

florantha, you can use Google Sketchup which is a free download. There is a learning curve for drawing 3D, but for 2D it is really easy. There are all sorts of tutorial videos on YouTube but they are geared toward 3D. If you download it and want a quick primer on drawing 2D (it will take 10 minutes to figure it out, tops) you're welcome to contact me via the GW email link. maria410, even if the floor is not perfect in your eyes, it sure looks beautiful in pictures. As histokitch, dan1888 and davidro said, the uppers on the sink wall still feel unsatisfactory. There's a few things going on there. First thing: I'm trying to have those uppers echo the built-ins elsewhere in the house. Below is a link to a prior thread - scroll to the bottom for a sketch of the overall ''look'' I have in mind. This makes me want to have those uppers as open cabinets with sides, backs, etc, rather than wall-mount shelves. And I'd like the left and right uppers to be consistent with each other in style, although not exact mirror images. Second thing (and somewhat contradictory with first thing): the left and right uppers are supposed to serve quite different functions. The left uppers will be in the corner of the kitchen, where the sink and range walls meet. The main prep zone is to their right and the range is to their left. I plan to store only stockpots there, to eliminate any reason for others to invade the cook's workspace. So the left uppers should be deep enough to hold 40 qt stock pots (which are appx 14-15'' diameter by 15'' tall, plus lid) with no doors. I may have a problem with lateral clearance to the grease hood (currently sketched in a 5 ft W X 4 ft D x 2 ft H grease hood with enclosed ducting overhead), but otherwise this seems pretty straightforward to me. The right uppers, at in the other end of the sink wall, seem more complicated. - They should hold daily mugs and glasses conveniently close to the dishwasher, but low enough to be reachable if you're not Wilt Chamberlain. 8'' height between shelves would be enough, we have storage for tall wineglasses in the dining room. - I also want to put beverage-making there, as far away from the prep and cooking zones as possible, but without the associated clutter on the counter. So I'd like to have French press, tea press, electric kettle, coffee grinder, etc stored in those uppers. Those items need more height than typical glassware (French press is 11'' tall, burr grinder can be 13'' tall) and might want to be concealed behind doors. The blender is used daily for smoothies, needs a space up to 20'' tall, and I've no other nearby storage space so it will probably be a loitering counter-dweller, smoking cigarettes and bumming for spare change. - Finally, I'm also thinking the counter at that end can also be an occasional baking center. I'm not a baker, but hope to learn someday. This suggests the stand mixer as another counter-dweller (copper-fetishist SWMBO wants a copper KitchenAid ''Artisan'') and some storage for baking supplies (whatever those are? as a non-baker I am clueless) in the upper or below the counter. I have totally not figured out how to accommodate all those functions in anything that looks decent and works for a 5' 8'' woman (or a 6' man for that matter). Third thing: the window could be changed. The existing window (shown in the sketch) has no view of anything but gets great sunlight - and in the Pac NW, that's a precious thing. It could be made it bigger. The existing leaky double-hungs could be converted to casement or tilt-out for easier opening. It could be bumped out, and herbs grown on the resulting deep ''ledge''. It could be two or three separate windows, similar to florantha's wall. There could be reinforced points to grow hanging tomatoes outside the windows. All those will cost money, so the cost-benefit has to work.. Or, I could leave it as is, make it visually interesting as david suggests, or hang a colorful picture. @Ginger Bailey, Leo Buscaglia was a professor, motivational speaker and author who was kind of an expert on love and human relationships. I don't remember in which of his books he talked about failed relationships. Leo said that if you have a long term relationship that fails accept it, know that sometimes relationships fail, and move forward. If you have another long term relationship and it fails stop and take a good long look in the mirror and figure out what you may be doing wrong. If you look through my comments on Houzz I have disagreed with the pros on many, many occasions. A few probably don't like me all that much. I also freely admit that I have learned a lot from the Pros and non-pro regular contributors on this site. When I saw your post it seemed odd to me that Beth seemed hot under the collar. She is one of the Pros that generally has a ton of patience with people. I took the time to go back and read through your original post and all the comments. Honestly, I am still still not completely clear on what happened. 1. Contracted with Contractor A to have kitchen renovated. 2. Contractor A quit 3. Paid cabinet builder $7000.00 as a deposit $2000.00 balance remaining. 4. Cabinet maker agreed to complete the job. (verbal agreement). 5 - kitchen prepared for cabinet install - not sure what to believe here: A "They ended up not showing up for the work that was to be done. I hired another contractor who fixed my kitchen, and got it almost ready for cabinet installation." B "They gutted my old kitchen, and I was left without a washer and dryer, sink, cabinets refrigerator, all that, for over 7 weeks. -The guys they sent here to work were not knowledgeable on how to frame a wall, level a floor, hang drywall." 6. Subcontractor showed up with the new cabinets and "Insisted on installing them" 7. Posted pictures of damage/issues with cabinets. Said your unhappy with the cabinets. 8. Asked if you should pay them anything more. 9. The cabinet maker touched up the cabinets and you paid $5,400.00 in addition to the original $7000.00 for a total of $12,400.00. How did you expect anyone to be able to answer your question without knowing what the original agreement with Contractor A covered or what the $9000.00 was supposed to cover. You got the kitchen prepped for cabinets (drywall, framing, leveling the floor + whatever you didn't mention. You got new cabinets and had the new cabinets installed all for $12,400.00. Even for a small kitchen in a low cost geography, that is not much money for everything that was done and yes, you owed them for doing all that work. I have a 10' galley kitchen and it is going to run double that even with getting Ikea cabinets and installing the cabinets and flooring myself and doing all my own painting, just having someone else do the plumbing, installing the sink and countertops and moving 2 doors. I live in Pennsylvania Dutch country, not exactly NYC. If I were you I might think about the fact that the first contractor quit, you weren't happy with the second contractor/cabinet maker, you weren't happy with the people on Houzz who were trying to understand your situation, you felt that the 2nd contractors were trying to rip you off when they apparently did a lot more than just build and install your cabinets and accused them of not being very good communicators. Maybe the issue isn't with everyone else and maybe it is time to take a good long look in a mirror and figure out what you may be doing wrong.
